this was my favorite dos game growing up until my brother accidentally deleted it. I've never forgotten, and this is the first time in years of searching I found gameplay. you made my covd 2020
Same here 🤣, just saw this in a Netflix Docu and had a childhood flashback. Had absolutely forgotten about it, but now clearly remember playing it and even some of the animations. Had to find out how it was named and googled "90s animated Chess Computer Game" 🤣
I used to play this game around 2007-2010.This was one of my first games along with need for speed II SE , Wolfenstein, Mummy (2000),Mortal Kombat 4,Prince 1, Dangerous Dave 1 & 2 .
@gentilguy I wasn't actually trying to win this game, I wanted to show as many captures as possible since that's the best part of Battle Chess, see how I make my moves in a few seconds instead of thinking about them :) However, I didn't know about that, so thank you for the advice, I'll keep that in mind :)
Whew, felt deja vu. Time travel, back to childhood. Some of Happyest days of life. ❤ This was true masterpiece, I wish someone would make something like this with these modern effects.
I remember being a kid in the 90s and laughing like an idiot everytime the king got stripped lol. I also remember my shitty Tandy taking forever to animate the moves.
Oh wow - this is what it looked like? I could have sworn that the graphics were sharp with smooth animations, isn't it crazy what your memory (in combination with imagination) does?
Wow, that was quick... lol I found out why. It's dependent on the version of the game. The 1988 version was blue and black, and the 1989 version was green and black. I have no clue where the floppy for this game is, so I had to download it from the net. I downloaded the 1989 version, apparently. I did find the 1988 version, though. I wish I could find those floppies... had some really cool games and software. Thanks anyways!
Same. My parents thought I was smart for teaching myself chess as a kid, when it was totally by accident while trying to see all the fun kill animations.
Omg I LOVED this game. I so wish they would make it so I could play it now. I loved killing off each of the players w all the diff pieces, since they all killed each other differently. Such an awesome game. Way beyond it’s time.
I will definitely check that out. I had searched all over for this game & no one ever knew what I was talking abt when I’d ask if they remembered it. Now to finally find it AND find out I can play it again 😍😍😍. It always made me laugh when the king would just pull a gun out and bust a cap 😂. Now 30 years later, it still cracks me up. Thank u for uploading this. Brought back so many memories ❤️👏🏻👍🏻
I'm glad that you liked it :) To be clear, dosbox is kind of an emulator of old systems, you still need to load a copy of the game into dosbox to play it, but I can't give you more directions here, I hope you can understand
I remember playing this game in 5th grade! Had no clue how to play chess but i played it just to see the pieces move. Is there a modern version of this?
IN POP CULTURE. In the movie FX 2 from 1991 the game appears on the list of games a police officer searcher for on a disc during a house search. It's around the 32:50 movie time
Yes, I was using DosBox, but I don't really remember how many cycles I used. I remember it was extremely hard to get it to play at the right speed, though.
It's the first ever video game I played myself and really loved it. I was fascinated by the animations. When I found out about the multiplayer mode it became a passion to try and get every possible animation, the check mates being the most interesting since you could only get one per game. Amazing hours of fun !
Loved this game as a kid. I figured he was going for captures and not the win, hence a lot of questionable moves, but Red knight to b5 (12:00) still kind of made me wince. Felt like such a good position to just walk away from! ;)
I just heard about this in an interview with the developer (Rebecca Heineman) and thought it sounded familiar! My father showed me this when I was... 4 years old, I'd guess. :)
@@Pargali_Ibonun_gitarist_kuzeni Not the game scared me but when i played it, i was by my Aunt's Daughter at evening. The Game Ssound and the Sound of the old PC Tower scares me a little bit. It was not the Game it was more the atmosphere in the dark Room!
Started playing chess again because of The Queen's Gambit, but when I was six this game made chess seem like the coolest thing ever.
Same!
Same! And when the opponent queen moved... real chills back then
Damn Josh, same here, exactly 6 too, what year did this come out? I remember playing it in 90' or 91' for the first time

2002-03
My father had this game installed in his computer when I was a kid. I was so bad at the game but liked to play just to watch the animations.
This, Prince Of Persia for the Apple II and Dragon Warrior were my childhood. Nostalgia aquired!
I played this game more than 10 years ago. I'm happy to see it again. It reminds me of my childhood.
I played it throughout 1995-1996!
this was my favorite dos game growing up until my brother accidentally deleted it. I've never forgotten, and this is the first time in years of searching I found gameplay. you made my covd 2020
My father and I used to play this every so often when i was young. Good times
haven't thought of this in about 33 years... and here we are
Oh those battle animations were so cool :D
Finally I found the 90s computer chess game video! Good memories!
OMG AFTER YEARS I FINNALLY FOUND IT
feelings from the past. I'm 40. The AI was meh, but the animations were a blast
This brings back childhood memories.
This is how I got into chess actually.
I remember being a kid playing this and thinking that the each piece had an equal chance of winning in the fight animations. 😅
You must love Fire Emblem then
That game actually terrorized me as a kid 😅
Those freaking yelling sound effects...
Ahh memories . Thanks . I had this on floppy disk.
I remember playing this game without a clue as to how chess is played. Just to see the homies get cut down lol
Me too
Me three
I googled "That chess game in the 90s with animations" and I was sent here. Google is awesome.
Don’t forget the Star Wars version
Same here 🤣, just saw this in a Netflix Docu and had a childhood flashback. Had absolutely forgotten about it, but now clearly remember playing it and even some of the animations. Had to find out how it was named and googled "90s animated Chess Computer Game" 🤣
I googled "old animated chess"
I googled "battle chess"
I mean morally speaking Google is very very far from awesome
I actually learned how to play chess with this game. Great memories!
The animation of this game is epic! The sound too!
If you play it on Steam you'll realize this game is painfully slow.
I loved playing this! the animations were hilarious.
Yes!! I f*ckin' love it when took attacks rook!! This takes me back 30 years, thanks for uploading this little piece of my childhood.
I used to have this on my family pc back in 1991, man, the memories....
I wasn’t sure if I played this game till I saw the castle get up and walk around at 2 minutes. YUP. This for sure taught me chess.
I used to play this on break at school in the 90's, good times :)
When the King pulls out the Magnum .44 zapper!
That's his sceptre
@@TheInkPitOx8:54 Sceptres dont fucking shoot
I have so many memories of playing this as a little boy, along with a ton of other games from around that time
You made me remember better times.
You drink a whisky drink and a lager drink first?
My brother had this game and he made copies on diskettes. It was amazing. When the Queen did her thing. The animation was ahead of it's time.
Wow, i Played this in 1993, and the ski game with the bear in it, and the alley cat if imnot mistaken, everything was simpler back then
The sound quality almost sounds like those ear rape memes every time something wacky happens.
I used to play this game around 2007-2010.This was one of my first games along with need for speed II SE , Wolfenstein, Mummy (2000),Mortal Kombat 4,Prince 1, Dangerous Dave 1 & 2 .
Oh, the nostalgia! I played this as a kid. 👌
This is the legend chess game. It looks still good animation.
Thank you so much for bringing back good memories
Omg i have been looking for this game for over 15 plus years omg the memories such great game this is how I learned to play chess
shay allen I saw it at a Radio Shack, and HAD to buy it....
Sick Only wait you saw this game? This actual game at radio shack? Recently!?! dont get me hype!!
shay allen No, lol....I bought it at Radio Shack when the game first came out, in the late 80's
Ahhh, this is where it alll begun for me. For me, the most satisfying death was the Rook devouring the Queen.
@gentilguy I wasn't actually trying to win this game, I wanted to show as many captures as possible since that's the best part of Battle Chess, see how I make my moves in a few seconds instead of thinking about them :)

I like the way you played it with all the best animations and pieces being removed from the game
@@shawnphillippi1128 FINALLY, someone who gets the point of this video, thanks :)
I would say I want this as app but adds and microtrasactions would ruin it.
I really miss that.. l used to play that.. during those years, it shape my Chess game.. thanks for sharing this, a real nostalgic 👍👍
Finally found the childhood... This was the best, I can watch this all day long... Deja Vu!

I remember playing this as a kid, good memories.
Gosh, this travels way back!
4th grade memories here…The rook eating the taken space/piece was my favorite
I always remember the rook in this game was awesome to watch, this was where I first learned chess from
Oh wow - this is what it looked like? I could have sworn that the graphics were sharp with smooth animations, isn't it crazy what your memory (in combination with imagination) does?
When I was kid i use to play this game. And one time I had checkmate the computer. No one believed me but that was my happy date in history😍
This game was Wizard's Chess before the Harry Potter books existed...

Yeah kids, this is not a x0.5 speed video.
This was the actual game speed back in my childhood
lol i looked up checker and chess games back in the day but only found a couple basic ones
Death screams sure were scary...
