This really was an underrated film of the 1990's. I'm surprised hardly anyone has heard of it. Not alot of youtube videos on this film. It really is a subversive gem. I liked it when I first saw this in 97, but didn't realize how much I actually enjoyed this until later viewings. It's a really challenging film, and much of the film's humor occurs as a result of the circumstances, rather than being spoonfed to you by the actors.
Laura Dern gave a fearless performance in this film. It's a shame she was not nominated for either an Oscar or Golden Globe. Listening to the commentary track of this film by Dern and Alexander Payne, they speak glowingly on the whole experience. You could tell that all the actors performed on cue with a wink and a nod -- they looked like they were having a good time hamming it up for the camera. I absolutely love this film. It's one of my all time favorites. .
And watching Laura Dern's collective body of work, you really appreciate how nuanced her performances are. She's such a different character here as she is on the HBO series, Enlightened.
This movie is crazy. It's like the director took a time machine into the future and watched the film Juno, and then returned back to the 1990's and wrote Citizen Ruth's screenplay. Alot of the storyline beats in this film are completely inverted from some of the scenes in Juno.
She's very selective in her roles, but she's also from a family of successful actors. She doesn't need to take lousy roles in order to cut a check. Plus, she's also something of a muse for director, David Lynch. She's done a few films with him in the past.
Hi Movieclips. Excuse me, could you or anyone tell me one thing, please? Please, because I'm becoming crazy about it... Dern said she loved burping in this movie; I saw the 105:35 minutes version and she doesn't burp there; where does she do? Was the movie cut? Is the 106:00 version the full version WITH the burp? Thank you. Please help. Thank you.
What I don’t understand is why did this movie take a whole year to come out? because I looked it up this movie was filmed in April till may of 95 and it came out in December of 96 why???
I watched this movie the other day. I was afraid to watch it because of the subject matter. But I found myself laughing out loud so much. Laura Dern is truly one of the best!

Lol, I’d actually say those two are her most similar characters!

Or more like juno copied this one
A great film I don't think a lot of people have seen. Priceless.
She looks like she’s just been rushed out of a hair salon in the court scene lol

That guy has too many muses... Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern...Kyle MacLachlan... leave some for the rest of us, bro!
Such an underrated movie
The judge is...Tackleberry from Police Academy. 😂
Even more prescient about contemporary politics than Payne's followup, "Election."
Got tackleberry up there on the bench.
It's so sad that guy died so young
Alexander Payne is a very talented director.
This movie is amazing.
Sorry. So-arr-ry. Sorry.

@r33mote I sensitivity got worse as time progressed. Now everybody is offended of everything now.
