    I was in St Austell and couldn’t believe what I saw go through…an extended Castle Class.
    Nice video👍👍

      A class 43 is a loco, a High Speed Train is a train.
      It’s never something I have ever seen before have you ?
      Yes 47,57 rescuing them but the other way around ??, now you knew what I meant stop spitting hairs dafty.
      When locos form trains (class 43 included) of any more than 1 coach or van or wagon then it’s a train .

    That sleeper rescue was amazing.

    Wow, fantastic to see and reminiscent of the BR days when anything would rescue anything (almost). One can argue the use of “older” traction both created the problem but also helped save the day. Dare I say an 800 class set couldn’t have helped at all. Given the castle set is running lower capacity stock it had some capacity to spare and clearly did the job. I do hope the GWR castles are here for some time but fear their days are numbered. However is a fleet of retired 43s top n railing the sleeper out of realm?

      I believe GW once hauled the sleeper from Paddington with a pair of back-to-back power cars, but I suspect there must have been another lco in the formation even if it didn't help with traction - the HST power cars and trailers have a unique electrical system for their hotel power (ie lights, sitcom, etc.) and the sleeper coaches probably aren't compatible with it.

    I wonder how they connected them? They must have used the emergency draw bar which is kept in the power car and rarely used?

    • @cooltrainfan
      @cooltrainfan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes thats correct, they normally have had a emergency coupler for when a hst set fails and has to be dragged within where the former guards area was.

    Nice video! Will the sleeper be running as usual this upcoming Sunday as me and my dad plan to go on it (we live in north west England) also do castle sets run normally and how often?

    • @cooltrainfan
      @cooltrainfan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@BritishRailJack there is roughly 3 per day that run between penzance and plymouth with one of the sets going to exeter later on. Sleeper i think will run as usual with 57602 on the front as all other 57/6 are broken or under heavy exam

    Well that video certainly fits into the 'I have never seen that before'. but is not as daft as you would think as an HST power car is a diesel locomotive and not a DMU as some people think, and when you have two HST power cars coupled together you have a very capable double loco with 4'500hp on tap and a high route availability given its Bo+Bo-Bo+Bo wheel arrangement, will we see these pulling a very fast freight at 125mph?

    • @tgk300xx4
      @tgk300xx4 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, this was a struggle for the two powercars and although they have 4500hp between the two of them, the combined tractive effort is equal to on Class 67 and roughly half a class 57.

    • @Ashworth-Media
      @Ashworth-Media 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tgk300xx4 The Class 43 HST Power Cars where wrongly geared for the added weight as they where built for speed and in locomotive terms they are light weight but they where getting the job done. I have seen at first had just how fast just two Power Cars (without coaches) can accelerate from a rolling start of 10mph up to line speed in 1/4 of mile.

    • @tgk300xx4
      @tgk300xx4 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Ashworth-Media Definitely, the gearing is the issue not the power.
      They are spot on for fast acceleration but for heaving haul up hills they are awful. They really do suffer on hills.
