It is so nice to see --- and hear -- a youth orchestra quite magnificently handling this symphony with the strings seated in an authentically Mahlerian disposition (divided violins in the front, with cellos left, violas right). This seating arrangement (used by Mahler in all surviving photos of him in front of an orchestra) always pays dividends in Mahler's orchestral works as well as to the entire symphonic repertory from the 19th century and up through the 1920s and 1930s. And the 4th Symphony is the second most important Mahler symphony where its use is, to my ears, mandatory (number one is the 9th Symphony). A prime example of this occurs at 24:04 (measure 254ff) in the second movement where a held high note in the 2nd violins is switched via overlapping glissandi to the 1st violins (24:11) producing an extraordinary effect entirely lost in more modern (and anachronistic) seating arrangements. Watch this performance while listening with headphones and pay particular attention to which string section is playing what and you will be surprised to hear so much vital material entrusted to the 2nds (and often to the violas). An excellent passage for this occurs is the “heaven’s gate” passage starting at 47:13.
Really excellent. The clarity of the performance and the attention to detail make us hear Mahler as a truly modern composer.
