Something about that Lighthouse, and the surrounding landscape gives off that feeling of Area X... After reading the book, I can definitely feel it now. If I hadn't read the book, it would probably just be like any other beach with a run down Lighthouse. After reading The Southern Reach, I can honestly say that it helped me to better appreciate the complexities and beauty of those things that go totally unnoticed. Like the small ecosystem living in flooded tractor tracks left in the mud, or the neglected algae filled pool, that became an oasis for frogs and small fish.
Using stories to help bring environmental issues into light is awesome, and Jeff is really great at it. Give the man a nobel prize, I say. His work is amazing.

Good fiction is so hard to find these days I LOVE seeing an author bask in their glory.
