I am a tuba player. This was the very first symphony orchestra piece I ever played in my musical career as a freshman in college. I had enough time to figure out all of the following: There are 420 measures in the piece. In the tuba part, there are notes in about 109 measures. The rest of the measures are measures of rest. Most of those 109 measures (I don't recall the exact number) were one note on the downbeat. Yeah, let's just say this wasn't the best piece for me to get excited about orchestral music.
I remember reading somewhere that Liszt's Symphonic pieces are "failed works of art"... What a stupid comment, now that I find myself listening to this again for the 1000th time!
Michel Plasson was playing this at 1 km from my house. One of my favorite piece of music and I understand it is famous. I wonder if the timbers are well recorded in this recording. I had listened the others poèmes symphoniques but this one stays the first for me, a symbol for romanticism.
In part, I hear the musical score of the serial, Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe. I always wondered who wrote it. It was Franz Liszt! @2:03 @7:09 @14:11

Your contribution was appreciated
Coulda been worse. You could have been a viola player :)
So beautiful...Thankful to have the accompanying score to further delve into this masterpiece.

Are the first few bars a reference to his own sonata?
This was written a couple of years before the Sonata. But those heartbeat-like phrases are typical of Liszt for sure!
@@gergelykiss One can write a lot of scores beginning like this. I am not sure it is typical…
