  • Making a spring pole lathe from Roy Underhill s design. this is a double spring design that came from the 1500s and has been modified many times. in this video we make Boom arm, hickory spring, and tredal. we will cover riving out the spring and trimming it down with a froe and draw knife. so let's look at how to make a lathe with hand tools in this woodworking project.

    I watched Shannon turn the legs on the stool he just made on his treadle lathe and I think I would like to give turning a try. This would be less of an investment to see if I like it. I may have to build one. Thanks for another great video.

      Wood By Wright the turning tools will be a little of an investment but worth it. I worked in metal fabrication for years before an industrial accident put me in therapy and multiple back surgeries sent me back to college and a career change. I do believe I could build a good treadle lathe but not sure how much I would use it. The spring pole looks to be a good choice. Don't forget to give us some insight into the proper turning tools.

    I just found you on youtube. It has been a joy to watch you and listen to you enjoying your woodwork. I prefer using hand tools and doing woodwork manually, and many people have wondered why I don't use more power tools.
    I'm very glad to find someone else who gets it.

    I think I'm pretty good at turning. My speciality is turning a beautiful piece of wood with eye popping grain into fire wood :) :) . As I speak I'm making Christmas ornaments but on a power lathe so I can't match you James, but you are one of my heroes

    I built the one in his book. It didn't have that block. It tells you to rivet two copper conduit straps together. It works fine.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, that is one of the changes I will be making. I just like the feel of the block more than strap or twine. but they both work perfectly.

    James, in your first episode, you covered the wood and said the spring was from big-box store; however, it looks like in this episode you are not using that. Can you provide more details on your experience with the original wood, why you switched to splitting one out with a froe, and more importantly, what are optional variations on the spring return (Bungee, other woods, etc..)
    I live in Germany and the hugest issue I have is finding quality wood. I'm sure it is a language barrier; however, the challenge remains nonetheless. Then there is the expense... ; )
    Thanks for a wonderful channel. I try to be more of lurker and seeking answers myself; however I couldn't find a reference to the change above or in comments (did I miss it?).
    Happy Holidays!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bottom spring is hickory from the big box store. It's 3/4 in by inch and a half. However, the mainspring that the cord connects to has to have a lot more flex and for that you need to make sure you have a straight grain with it running all the way from one end to the other. The best way to do that is to split it out of a board, the split will run along the grain and guarantee you have grain going from one end to the other. You can also just use a good straight tree branch. Pick one that's bigger than you need and trim it down to the size you want.

    • @arick_mnc
      @arick_mnc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodByWright Thank you! So it is partly the big box and partly not.
      I probably missed that in the series and was thrown off by the riving of the upper spring which didn't look like a big box piece of wood.
      THANK YOU for a very thorough reply.

    Coming along nicely. So, is the treacle just gonna free float like that, or will it be attached to a pivot at the foot end?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      for right now it will just free float, but I might make a more tricked out on in the future.

    i'm 15 and looking to start getting into wood working. i also want to use as traditional as possible hand tools, what tools should i buy first. Also, where should i start learning about woodworking?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is my suggestion on where to start with tools. th-cam.com/video/LKvyJ4CrvDQ/w-d-xo.html as to how to learn that depends on you. I made the transition to hand tools and picked up 99% of what I learned from youtube. but a lot of people have to have some one there teaching along the way.

    Have you, has anyone in history, considered replacing the spring with a weight? Would it be advantageous to have a constant force applied to the turned piece?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can be done and I have seen some do it but having the force change is advantageous as you do want more force on the cord to get the bowl turning how to start and it's good to have less Force on the spring at the beginning when you push down with your foot. If you put a weight on the end it tends to bounce around and can cause it to be a bit jerky.

    • @jwydubak9673
      @jwydubak9673 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense. Thank you, @@WoodByWright.
