I'm training since 14 years, and I have Sparring videos which date back to 13 years ago. So I decided to put a video together with a chronological progression.
@FedericoMalagutti it makes me excited because I've been documenting my journey since I started a little over a year ago, and seeing where someone as skilled as you started vs. Where you are now is such an encouragement for newer fencers like me 😊
That's A LOT of quality progress evident in this footage. Also, whoever you're fighting at 4:51, I would love to see more of you two fighting. Both of you seem precise and confident in your movements. Thanks for this.
Thank you, Federico 🙏🙇♂️ this video could not have reached me in any better timing than this, as finally, after many many years of following HEMA from a distance, I'll join a club this Saturday. I was so looking for content to inspire me to start strong, and having a montage of some of your journey through the years of Longsword practice is everything I could ask for. I can't wait to het into it... The feints, the rythms, the timing, the skill, the sound... I can't wait to start this journey. Thanks for sharing yours with us, you are truly and inspiration, was, and will continue to be, for many many years. Thank you so much.
Congrats on your anniversary! I'm glad you dropped low gear sparring. I came to a conclusion that it creates bad habits, and when it doesn't, it is dangerous.
I tend to agree with you. It's either risky or meh in most of the cases. I still do it from time to time in summer, without spending too much time over it, more as a recreational activity and as a way to deal with the weapon in a slightly different way (more focus on control). But other than that it's not worth the time spent doing it.
Hellow from Russia. Congratulations with your 13 years of fencing. How person who do it for 10 years (in sport epee without any prizes) I would be happy to see your endless fight. With the best wishes and let lucky follow your blade!
@@stuartking84able I got more precise at sword handling but I missed the ability to land many actions and I developed a bad sense of measure by staying too close to the opponent.
@@FedericoMalagutti would make an interesting video. I think you've mentioned before that it led to artefacts in your sparring? On the other hand, did it make bind work more important?
@ it made bind work more possible, but simply because we remained in the bind more due to the artifacts we added to the game by ourselves. So on that side, my fencing now doesn't reflect that period a lot. I still have all the skills I learned, sometimes I land something, but it's rare. I am quite happy anyway of the time spent going for it back then, I learned useful things, in many ways, both positive and negative. It's part of what makes my fencing what it is now.
What are your opinions about minimal gear training ? Early in my HEMA path, I thought this was really important to not be too aggressive because of the protection. Then I swore only by full gear training. Now I feel more balanced, understanding that both setup introduce artefacts in the training (but I spar with full gear 80% of the time I'd say).
@@timhema5343 yes it’s more o less what I think. I admittedly spar almost every time with gear on, but in summer I have fun with minimal gear too sometimes.
@@iantheduellist when I started I trained lesser than now, but since the last 5 - 6 years I train between 12 and 18 hours per week, depending from the week.

Not only is your martial form crisp and easy to follow, but you have some of the absolutely most gorgeous backdrops to fence in front of.

I had some in various times of my career, I don't have recorded them. But at some point I will.
