  • Good day TH-camrs! Here I think we have a little bit of a rarity, The Laughing Policeman, Charles Penrose, Victory Records No 53, December 1928
We are all familiar with the popular recording of this song by Charles Penrose on Columbia 4014 in 1926 but he did record this song a number of times for different labels.
Initially on Regal records G7816 in June 1922 and also on Dominion records in April 1929, but this version is on Victory Records was recorded in December 1928.
I understand that there were other versions on Eclipse as well and possibly another version of re-recording for Regal but certainly this is one that seems to be slightly rarer.
Interestingly none of the versions are the same they all bear variations in the lyrics but all around the central theme.
Certainly Mr Penrose made the most of his hit record.....it remained popular even into the 1970's
This plays very nicely on my Victrola using a soft tone needle as the grooves are narrower than the standard 78. Worth 6d of anybody's money!
More details about the machine can be found in my other clips.
Thanks for viewing, please like and subscribe if you can and happy viewing!

I posted the 1922 & 1926 versions, the 1926 perhaps being the most popular & iconic. This however, is closer to its roots in 'The Laughing Song' which is much earlier & also bears the lyrics "Kissing the other fellows girl" Here's my copy, so you can note the similarities: th-cam.com/video/zRvchiTfMDA/w-d-xo.html

That’s very interesting indeed! Just viewed your clip on your site. How on earth did Billie Grey get away with claiming the credit that she had written The Laughing Policeman for her husband Charles Penrose when it is so clearly lifted from the Laughing Song recorded so many years before? Yes the lyrics are different (these varied from version to version presumably due to contractual issues with the record labels) but the tune is pretty much spot-on the same.I’m amazed there wasn’t a copyright battle in court! The Dominion version is on its way to me so it’ll be interesting to see how that differs from the other versions that I have. Certainly everybody seems to have made a buck or three out of this one! Many thanks for viewing and your reply, it’s amazing what comes out of the woodwork when you post these clips on TH-cam.

@@chris1961grams Maybe the original 'Laughing Song' wasn't copyrighted. My pleasure in adding my posting into the mix, I spotted the similarities as soon as I played the record, but it was only on hearing your 'Victory' version, did I spot the similarity in the lyrics. Look forward to hearing your dominion recording. What will that reveal?!
