Stentor Compact Folding Gramophone
Here we have what I think is a very rare item which I’ve recently acquired.
A Stentor compact folding gramophone which originates from France but is made from imported Swiss components. It has the original French dealers tag on the bed plate which is rather nice.
It’s all original and plays really well.
I’ve been able to find out absolutely nothing about this machine, there are no images of other examples on Google from what I can see and there is only one other example on TH-cam but is difficult to actually see the machine as it has the record on it already which covers up most of it. They may have come in different colours this one is black.
I suspect this dates from mid 1920’s but that is only a guess.
It’s quite unusual these days not to be able to find out some basic information but this one I’ve drawn a blank on. Any information that the experts of TH-cam can offer would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe if you can to view my clips as I upload them, and happy viewing!

Gramophone Cinema or Kinephone
มุมมอง 324ปีที่แล้ว
Here we have a very interesting gramophone novelty. It is the Gramophones cinema, otherwise known as the Kinephone which is essentially a zoetrope, which, when you look through the gaps in the revolving drum, you can see a moving image. Dates from the 1920s, there a number of discs with different images for hours of endless fun. Hope you can see it on the clip, thanks for viewing please like an...

Here We have Ray Starita’s Ambassadors on Sterno playing Looking on the Bright Side with Sam Browne on vocal on a very rare Sternogem Gramophone. I’ve had the motor out and lubricated, replaced the gaskets in the soundbox and tightened up the stylus bar connection...
Standard Talking Machine Model AA Gramophone Phonograph

Here we have my standard talking machine model AA, which I purchased from a dealer at the National Vintage Communications Fair in the Birmingham NEC about 30 years ago at least. This was sold originally to me as a Columbia AU, but I noted that the centre spindle had been milled down to accept a normal sized record. Not knowing much in those days and well before the Internet this I thought was a...

Good day TH-camrs! Today we have a clip of my Columbia 113a portable gramophone. Portable in the loosest sense of the word as it is weighing in at an absolute ton but were amazingly put together with very high finish quality and manufacture. Still sounds lovely today, this is Ray Starita and his Ambassadors Band with Betty Bolton on vocal singing You’re the Cream in my Coffee from 1929. I don’t...

Good day TH-camrs! Today we have My Rockabye Baby played by the Picadilly Players under the direction of Al Starita with vocal chorus by Florence Oldham. This is recorded in October 1928, and is played on my very early Decca model 2 “Trench” portable Gramophone, which I believe dates from around 1915. Yes these machines were known as scheme machines as they locked the customer into buying the busy bee records and cylinders. This is a French made Pathe machine. IT IS NOT A CONVENTIONAL 78? Pathe was superior to 78s. ONE Vertical needle movement. TWO Actually NO needle, a small ball shaped sapphire semi permanent played a large groove. THREE played from center out to edge. FOUR rotational speeds were 90 rpm pt higher. (While when Pathe later made machines that could also play 78s, this one can't) This was was unfortunately 😭 played in a "live" echo room, if it were played in "studio" it would sound much better. As it is the orchestra backing and female voice reproduced better than any other process of the time, even Edison Diamond Disc.)

Unbelievably, the grooves are the standard gauge of a 78 rpm record. It is a playable item, but you need to have an adapter to fit onto a turntable. I think the playing duration is about 40 seconds! On the Internet there is an audio clip of one of these being played. Thanks for viewing., Please like and subscribe if you can to see my other clips.

Thanks! After so many years, it’s finally right. When I bought this machine, I didn’t really know much and it was so difficult to find out what was right and what wasn’t right. Now with the power of the Internet and experts across the world, it’s finally there! Thanks for viewing and your kind comment.

Do you have instructions on how to lubricate these machines? I have a noise coming from mine when the platter is in motion- perhaps from the governor drive shaft? All gears are lubricated- I think there may be a bearing I missed. I'm very familiar with the workings of the Edison cylinder players- Thanks!

    • @chris1961grams
      @chris1961grams ปีที่แล้ว

They are fairly noisy machines. Mine is and there is a degree of flutter, as well as the spring winds down. Best thing is to get them lubed up as much as possible and take into account that they are well over 100 years old!

Thanks Paul, it’s very rare to find these in such good condition, largely due to the materials used. This one must have been stored away in good conditions for many years.

Thanks for viewing! In the UK the usual route to find these machines is either auction houses or eBay. The problem at the moment is and has been for sometime is that the market is flooded with very poor reproduction machines made recently particularly in India. There are a few Facebook groups which are worth joining so you can ask for advice on machines that you might want to buy. My recommendation initially would be to acquire a HMV102 portable Gramophone, these are still in reasonable supply and are still excellent performers and a great start for someone wishing to play original 78 rpm records. You can expect to pay probably about £100 for a good example and up to £300 for one which is a coloured example. These typically come in red, blue and green. Happy hunting! Please like and subscribe to see my other clips where you will find a upload of an HMV 102.

Thank you! These are nifty little machines which sold very well in their time in the 20s. It’s surprising, therefore, that they don’t come up all that often now. This machine does particularly well with this record! Thanks for viewing, please like share and subscribe if you can to see other clips of my Gramophones Phonographs and Curio collection.

Yes there were all sorts of novelties available in the 1920s. Magnetic Dancers were popular (Known as Tango Two in the UK), this company also did dancing puppets which danced along with the record. These are even rarer, a couple of spring to mind are the Dancing Boxers and Ragtime Rastus. There are many reproductions available for all of these but the Magnetic Dancers that you see are all original. Glad you like the clip, please like share and subscribe if you can to see my other clips featuring my Gramophones Phonographs and Curios.
