This just blows my mind!
When you hear something like this all you want to do is to sit down with an acoustic guitar and play something like this, but you just don´t get how the hell he´s doing it !
It´s great inspiration though (and great music)
An old friend!!! Dats da blues!!!
Seriously man...Terry is a real musician who improvises everything he plays. He never plays anything the same twice. There are no tabs for 12 bar blues like this.
So as a 21 or 22-year-old kid I stumbled into a bar in Portland, I want to say it was called the Candlelight bar. I ordered a beer and was lucky enough to catch seat at the front of the stage. I drink only 1/3 of my beer on the first set because I was mesmerized. It was my first blues experience and I came back as often as I could that one year I lived in Oregon.
Portland Oregon has a great blue scene with many very talented players. I spent many years there in the blue scene 15 or 20 years ago and it was fantastic, I still have friends there so I assume it’s still great! I’ve actually played with this guy, Terry Robb, he’s bad ass on that guitar!
I love Terry Robb! I heard him a lot in Portland, and years later, he signed his CD for my son who went on to become a guitar player.
We saw Terry picking for tips last night in Corvallis Oregon. Maybe Twenty people at the most listening in a dinner and cocktail house. Great great player who just kicks it beyond normal expectations.
I've taken about a half dozen lessons from Terry, mostly trying to figure out Fahey stuff (Terry produced some of his last records)...usually Terry would show up without a guitar, just pull some $99 piece of shit off the guitar store rack, then proceed to play so perfectly, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He's truly a master, and a really good, down to earth dude. Check out some of his electric and slide playing, just awesome
This is part of Terry Robb's style--he says he likes to play a lot of notes, and in this case, plays them fast. This is incredibly clean and this is an instance where fast = fun.
Fucking amazing !
Been listening to Terry for years and love to have him wake me up in the mornings..
how does it feel to be a giutar blues god terry? jealouse and in awe. great talent. enjoyed every second. i feel like i play mary had a little lamb blues one note at a time after listening to you. keep it up
AMAZING. Learnt so much from this one video. GENIUS
No, I understood exactly what you said, and I respect your individual taste in the blues. It's definitely personal for everyone, which is why we all love it so much I guess.
Me and my wife were sitting just off camera one night and had fun hanging with Terry and the guys one night after his show. The location is Halibuts on Alberta St in NE Portland OR
It's the smooth and easy way he makes it flow that creates the groove. Guys like this amaze me. He's so comfortable with the instrument. The great ones make it look easy and sound great "every" time they play. I bet he's probably a nice guy too.
Ya otta hear him and Mark Hanson and Doug Smith play together as the Acoustic Guitar Summit. Been listening and learning from this guy for 25 years....never ceases to amaze me!
very very talented - please ignore the negative comments -this player/singer is good -he plays the way he feels - and - damn - it sounds GOOD.
It's the way it is, you gotta feel the blues. If you really want to play it, then work it out by yourself, there is nothing better you can do.
love that... his playing is awesome. why didnt i see this before?... its awesome. given me a great idea for a song im working on too. thanks .
WOW you truely are the blues master please make more great vids for the world to see im inspired to pick up my chops on the acoustic thanks.
I love this....was sittin here playin to it puttin a lil lead in which it needs none but def was fun...Favorited!
Finally I found this again! Heard it 14 years ago or so. This guy is a great guitar player
Great song. By Walter Jacob I think. Have loved it for years. Nice interpretation, nice picking.
Wow, solo blues on acoustic guitar is a lot of harder, than eletric guitar. Respect :O
hows does someone even get this good at fingerstyle blues man he is all over the place too!
Terry grew up a block away from us in the Parkrose Heights school district. I still remember hearing the loud electric rock and blues practicing coming from his homes open windows when we were in our teens. I have watched his performances many times in our home town of Portland Oregon over the years. Terry plays as if the guitar was a natural extension of his body. A true master musician and artist. - Mark Seibold
you have inspired me to take my blues playing further grate playing man 10 stars
Whts awesome is how he keeps the rythm going wit his thumb whilst playing lead
THIS IS AWWWWWWSOME!!!!! that is so soo sick man, what a pleasure to the ears!
its blues man, who cares if they make a mistake.
its the emotion that counts.
sweet home chhicago!!! what a song! i like it how he'S playing this
I will never play guitar that good.
that's some wicked blues. SRV influence comes through nicely
just awesome
How to play Cassie by terry robb😮
Classic turnaorunds. Great sounding guitar
Anytime you can make your Acoustic Guitar, sound like a Fender Strat, that's how you know you've accomplished something!
wow love this!!!!!!!! SOOOOOO GOOOOD!!! SUPERB!
great performance, i would pay to see this.
You're right and I appreciate what you're saying. It's just there are some people on TH-cam who feel it's their God-given right to criticize even the most talented of musicians whom they could never even come close to in talent. You know the types I'm talking about. Thanks for the post!
Great playing ..................!!!!!!!!!
awsome... clean, groovy, very inspiring!
anyone who can play blues is so great[=
Brilliant Terry... love it. Thank you
Holy Shit...who needs heavy metal!
your right you need meshuggah
I'm getting so tired of people being critical about his singing. Everyone works with what they've got! The guitar playing is world class and that's what's being featured. The vocals are as good as he can do. I'd like to see you or the others who criticize Terry's singing do 1/100th the job he can! When will people learn to say something nice or don't say anything at all. This isn't a place to facelessly criticize.
my God my God!!! What a guitar player!
@coyotekus Do a Google search and check out the Wikipedia page. From that page: The 12-bar blues (or blues changes) is one of the most popular chord progressions in popular music, including the blues. The blues progression has a distinctive form in lyrics and phrase and chord structure and duration. It is, at its most basic, based on the I-IV-V chords of a key.
Nasty Big Time ! Born w/ the blues !
Really really really good.
Big Ron
Since when was this a race! Ugh - so sick of stupid comments like this. Yes - Tommy is amazing. Terry has played with Tommy on stage and does not feel like he's competing with him. Have you played with Tommy Emmanuel on stage???
So did I. I was NOT disappointed.
Terry is an amazing blues guitarist! Inspiration to blues guitarists everywhere!
Professional blues....great sound!
He has more of an electric style than acoustic. Plays a bit too many notes for my taste in blues . . . listen to Lightnin' Hopkins play in the E position as well, totally different & more pleasing.
you are a monster!!
wonderfoul...
AWESOME!
Straight ahead blues!
keep on jammin!! that was great!!
f'ing 1 million thumbs up...love it
got my foot tappin! great stuff!
... he cannot possibly be human.
This is smoking Chicago blues. This guy is an excellent player.
Great playing!
a real master! this is awesome!
nothing quite like the blues played this well... an inspiration mate
my face before seeing the video : =|
my face before watching the video : =)
my face after watching the video : =O
One of the happiest surprises about moving to Portland 27 years ago is seeing Terry playing over and over again, often on weekday nights just for tips in a cool dive bar. I’d frankly rather see him play, at any price, than Eric Clapton. Terry is Incredibly generous with his talents. What a treasure.
WOW!! i like it so muchhhh....
Shreadng it. Yeah.
My first inspiration... Terry, you are a giant!
For the most part, besides an occassional dropped-D and very rare DADGAD, Terry plays in standard tuning. You won't find tab b/c he never plays a song the same - it's always off the cuff improvisation (and he can effortlessly improvise for any length of time). That's what makes him one of the greats in this field. Every time I've seen him play, he plays every song a little different. A real master of the genre!
I LOVE YOU,,,PLAY YOU BLUES
Yea Boy Boy!!! GREAT!!!!
You have just humbled me sir
one word: beast!!!!!!
ps. . . . .thank you pandora bc if it wasnt for pandora i would have never discovered terry
Terry is, and will always be the "real deal" - besides that, one of the best teachers of the craft out there today.
Jmiotke22. With all due respect, I fear that you failed to grasp anything I said.
I am not a big Eric Clapton fan nor would I consider him a Blues player. Rather, one who has been greatly inspired by the Blues. Although I have enjoyed some of his blues albums, as well as his stuff with Wynton Marsalis, I moved on from his stuff back in High School. Admittedly, I wouldn't have discovered Blues and Ragtime without Clapton.
Fantastic player. Technically speaking. But it completely seems to be lacking the raw emotional and personal aspect that makes the acoustic Blues so special. It's devoid of anything profound and meaningful and leaves me unspeakably bored. Great player, though. From a technical standpoint. But it's desperately lacking a pulse. Give me the "sloppy" and "slow" players like Furry Lewis and Bukka White.
@lonewolf052706 First of all, i usually do not care much about race, with two exceptions, dance and music. Secondly, you can't compose blues man, it's like saying that you compose life, or compose a story. This dude can play fast, and yeah cool he does the hammer on/off very fast and all that, but i might as well just listen to a machine playing it, go and listen to snooks eaglin, elmore james, T-bone, Blind willie, Blind lemon, from top of my head, those are some of the best
@GScott1991 And I disagree with you, while he is technically very proficient his solos don't make the listener feel anything because they're too clean. This guy looks like an accountant, what does he know about a "mean ol' world?" He is a better guitar player than Muddy, Robert Johnson, T-Bone, all of them, but that's just it---he's so good his technical excellence leaves the listener feeling like they listened to a seminar on blues, not a real bluesman.
@biscuitman54731 That's why white guys who play the blues, no matter how skilled, will never have the credibility of the original black artists. This guy is a far better player than Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson but his music lacks the soul and feeling. It's like a white guy who grew up in the suburbs rapping about the ghetto, it just doesn't feel authentic. I mean honestly, what does he know about a "mean ol' world?" Oh, and I'm white so don't think I'm being racist--just telling the truth.
To me this is not really the blues,- just the blues scale played fast and clean. I could not help but notice that the performer is very distant from what he is singing about. I can't see any emotions pouring into his music that's why it sounds like a repetitive routine that get's tiring.
There's only so much that technique contributes to music,- virtuosity does not substitute sincere and strong human feeling.
Do you have any idea of how often people make spelling and grammar errors on TH-cam? It just so happens that people make MISTAKES. Your comment is not relevant to the video, and is hardly even relevant to my comment. I was just making a point, and while I was making a point, I made a technical mistake. I'll try to be more careful next time so some dork like you wont have to correct me.
i purchased all of his music on iTunes, he definitely earned my money GAWWDDDD!! HIT ME ONE MORE TIME BABY . . . . . .buy this guys music for fuck sakes, support this man! i want more haha
GREAT PLAYING!!!!!!!!!!
Trully a blues master
very very very good !!!
Monster! 🙏🏼
yeah, slow it down Terry, oh, and more vibrato, oh and dont forget to move up to the 12th fret and pick some screaming notes, lol.....if these idiots only knew a fraction of what you know, and what you can play, funny how they can size up a performers knowledge in one video, which by the way is outstanding. Ok, now Terry? once upon a time there was a fellow named Son House, lol
Try using a pick like he is using, one that is attached to your thumb. That way you get really pronounced bass notes. It does come with practice though like anything. Drop me a PM if you like and I can send you some good guitar pro tabs to get you going (if you have that program).
Un Maestro! Very True.
It's so ridiculous. Maybe u can show us you're blues guitarist skill just to see if its better than this guy. Maybe he's not playing in the way u like , but its brilliant. maybe there is no only jonhson and clapton. just grow up...
@ycoby28 av been looking for ages or guitar tabs for this cant find them att tall make ya a deal tho if i can ever manage to find them ill send them to you and if you manage to find them send me them please i beg ya dude f**king awesome eh
@coyotekus 12-bar blues" is short for a 12-measure (measure is another word for bar) chord progression, which at completion, cycles through and repeats itself as many times as needed for the verses, choruses, and solos in a song....help any???lol
You don't know what you're talking about. Terry writes and records lots of original tunes.
I'M NOT IMPRESSED. If you're impressed, you should get out more. Roy Buchanan used the same flatpick-and-finters technique, and Roy Buchanan played a 15-minute walk from my apartment for 18 months, during which I saw him 300 nights. I've leaned in-person from Roy Buchanan, Pat Donohue, John Cephus, John Jackson, Tuck Andress, and Josh White, just to name a few from 48 years of guitar study. (I'm in the blind acoustic blues man tradition.) I'm not impressed by the playing in this video, competent as it sounds. If you are in or near any American city of over a million, you can see better musicians live locally. Y'all should get out more.
Couldn't agree more!
That was spectacular!
I see your point. He's certainly not a particularly slow blues player, but i think it's enjoyable nonetheless. You could say the same for Gary Moore's heavy, overdriven blues solos. Still, each to their own.
