Before the Corona 19, I was in Australia to study English for a year. I was terrified to go out alone because of racists. Lots of the bad experiences made me very small at the time. I was suspected as a thief and couldn't hear apologizes at the market over 5 times. When I walked on the street around 9 to 10 p.m. , super old mans flirted maybe the behaviors are from the perceptions about Asian females. On a bus, a little boy showed his little finger towards me and said go back to China, giggling with his friends. When I was talking to my friend walking on the street, after I sald sth to my friend and one old couple said 'so?' and passed across us , pussing us and saying 'fucking Chinese'. Some restaurant ignored me about 1 hour so I went to another feeling like a shit. Thw worst experience is when I heard 'slot' from a homeless. 8 couldn't mention everything here but it is clear it took off my confidence a lot. I thought I couldn't be treated as me there. Many Aussies used the term Chinese like that's a insulting word even before Corona. It got me thinking Corona 19 just gave them an good excuse to be a racist.
The thing is I'm from Korea. Racists think chinese deserve racism cuz Corona is from China. But they do to others as well. I'm not saying them to do only to Chinese. I'm saying they're not educated and Corona can't be the reason for discrimination.

Australia is a beautiful country, I had nice and cheerful friends there. Although I saw racists Australian, I don't think they are representatives of Australia. And no matter what I did, racists' perception about Asian didn't change easily.
When I acted who I am and it's different from what people think Asian like, I heard only that I'm different.
If you see just one person and think that others in his or her country would be like that, you need to know the world is bigger than you know. Also if you see a news about china&covid19 and think the Asian walking away in front of you is relevant to the news, that's wrong.

I went to Sydney Harbour and watched at the Opera House. After the show, I went to the nearby restaurant to eat dinner but the owner said that they were about to close and could no longer serve any food. When I was about to leave, a white family of 4 came in and were served. I thought the owner was not racist, he was just considerate for the family instead of a single hungry Latin American individual. And so I thought.

*Do Australians really think that all Asians are Chinese? Like why are they even bothering innocent Asians even they aren’t even Chinese like? Are they are immature or what? This is ridiculous, for real. Especially kids, when I was minding my business walking to school this chick goes to her friend and whispers “get your mask, Chinese” as if I couldn’t hear her, plus I didn’t look like a Chinese that girl was clearly blind and arrogant.*

It's not much different in America though unlike Japan or Australia we won't openly point it out. People can become American but there's hierarchy here and if you don't look or act a certain way you won't be accepted culturally and even then certainly not universally. Since each state has it's own culture and sub cultures within them you can be accepted in one but rejected in the other.

The information about New Zealanders coming over to Australia is inaccurate. To clarify, kiwis coming to Australia don't have full rights, meaning the same rights as Australian citizens, however, Australians who move to New Zealand have full rights and that is the issue been spoken about - that is the "racism/discrimination" between NZers and Australians is generated from, the inequality of rights between both migration system is the issue debated by kiwis. Thought should add that here in order to support the kiwi community. GREAT video and lots of interesting points to generate awareness on one of Australian's hot topics. Thanks

One day on 2002, when I was waiting for the train at Wollongong train station, an Aussie teenage walked towards to me and said " back to your country. I will shoot you ". I knew he did not have the gun ( thanks to Australian's gun law) but it is painful experience. The worse thing happened to me on 2003 in Sydney darling harbour, two Aussie teenage punched my left eye without warning. I had multiple mild orbital fracture. And I was robbed in Sydney train twice when I was in Sydney from 2003 to 2005. I can not count how many times I heard " Fxxk, go back to China" from the car passing me in Sydney.
My son was born in Australia and he only can speak English. He is the only Asian boy in his class. But I had to told him " If you look like a Chinese, then you are Chinese. " I had to told him the painful true stories which happened to Chinese in Australia.

Almost 500 aboriginal people have been killed in custody, no cop has been convicted. The government once suspended the racial discrimination act for the NT intervention.
Australia's history remains being presented in a whitewashed way in schools and public representation. The stolen generations and the genocide are being denied by media personalities.

The first time I encountered racism in Australia was a few days ago, I guess it’s probably related to covid19 pandemic.

In my opinion, the answer to "Is Australia Racist?" is both "yes and no", depending on which aspect you want to focus on; So not racist, in terms of recent government policies, which is inclusive of everybody and non-discriminatory. But Australia had an official racist "White Australia policy", which only ended in 1973.
Furthermore, even today there are still a a lot of racist individuals (and all kinds of groups) who still have a racist view of the world. Two groups are the One Nation party, which started off as an anti-asian party, and another group is the Australia First Party, run by a white supremacist by the name (Dr) Jim Saleam. The irony is that this racist Saleam pretends to be a white European / Greek, although it's widely known he has lebanese heritage.

I have enjoyed listening to what has been openly discussed and having spent 20 years living and working in various parts of Australia I can agree in the most parts of what you say. However, at no time was the real elephant in the room ever discussed, that is the disgraceful attitudes openly demonstrated by many white Australians towards the Indigenous people of Australia. My best friend was Indigenous, I have lived and worked around parts of the indigenous population in various places in Australia and became tired of having to constantly bite my tounge to avoid confrontation between my work mates and other white Australians, even with those in authority, Police etc. We have even seen Australian politicians show their true colours when they encounter issues relating to the indigenous population. It is disgraceful and ugly in it's purest form and was the main reason I left Australia, because I knew it was a battle that I alone could not win. I would suggest that the majority of white Australians have little or no real understanding of indigenous culture, beit of mainland tribes, or Torres Strait Islanders resulting in opinions formed out of ignorance by those who couldn't care less. When I am told by others that they are not responsible for the plight of these people today, they demonstrate that really they do no give a dam. What they fail to accept is that they vote for politicians in elections, who then make the political policies that will favour, or go against indigenous people TODAY and not just from past events. A number of years back Australia was challenged by the UN to clean up its act, but since then matters have been allowed to fall by the wayside. Australia should not consider itself alone with this type of criticism as the US is no better with its treatment of the American Indian. In this day and age there is no excuse for this kind of abusive attitude to be allowed to continue, so why is it still the case? .......... FEAR and CORRUPTION!

There are people of all different colors and races that can be so accomodating and will treat you fairly and nicely, but there are also people that will discriminate you. It's reality folks, it does not depend on what nationality a person has, but it's highly dependent on his core values as a human being.
