  • This filmed slideshow tells the history of Independence, Missouri and its connection with westward expansion through Thomas Hart Benton's mural at the Harry S. Truman Library, "Independence and the Opening of the West." Benton describes his composition of the mural and the symbolism he felt it represented, including the interactions between Pawnee and Cheyenne Indians with white pioneer settlers, Voyageurs, and traders in their quest for manifest destiny.
