He was starving, freezing, and likely delirious after walking for hours that first day. He thought this town was only 4 miles away, so I can see why he kept going, thinking any minute he'd see houses or signs of life. He was operating under a false premise, and he couldn't bear the thought of failing them. His love and devotion did ultimately save them. It's so sad he died, but I think he'd rather it was him than his wife and kids. God bless him.
It had snowed a TON. There were no visible roads in that location, just a massive expanse of forest and snow. It's tragic! R.I.P. to James. I hope his daughters know how much their daddy loved them; I'm sure they do! W man, husband, father!
It is unfortunate but as well in my eyes and many , this man is inspirational because Regardless of the mistakes made on the journey and situation they were in , when it come to his family he didnt fold and he did what he had to do and pushed forward untill the very end , Rip to him absolute legend 🙏
If you are lost in the woods like that, you need to start a huge fire. It will keep you warm, keep wild animals away and can alarm rescuers. Once a fire has reached a certain size (about 4-5 feet diameter) it gets hot enough to even burn green branches and the leafs. When you put branches with green leafs on top of the embers (the more embers the better) it will create a lot of smoke.(I did that before)
This is one of the most sadest stories ive heard, how this man traveled far in the mountains in the freezing snow to save his family. He died, but his family survived, thank God. 😔💖🌹🙏🙏
@@andyholstein237 well it wouldn't be a problem if youtube didn't present all the top comments as I'm watching. Just happened to look down and boom. Ruined.
I'm thinkin the reason they weren't found is that they moved off that Bear Camp Road (where the search was focused) and got on that logging gravel road that was supposed to be closed by the gate and was a dead end. The snow probably covered their car tracks at that locked open gate, so no one probably thought to look down the logging road. They might have widened the search area after they weren't found on the Bear road and that's when the pilot saw his footprints. just guessing. Sad story
I just recently started listening to MrBallen podcasts and watching his youtube channel. It's a great presentation of these stories and he really covers a lot of topics so it stays fresh. Very cool to see you diving into these stories, even if some are very tragic like this one.
The Kim Family situation was tragic.😢 Mr. Ballen and your reaction captured that horror of the situation. I could honestly see myself dying in that situation like James Parker because there so many unknowns and honestly...I feel like it okay to turn back and find the correct turn or go back to motel/hotel near a small town. Damn bears and stupid map, but James decisions just turned out to be every worst possible scenario for the man that loved his wife and 2 daughters more than anything in this world.
He lost everything in an apartment fire. He is physically ok but it will take a long time and a lot of rebuilding to recover from the fire. Check out his go fund me in the video description.
Dang what a sad story. In the end he did save the family tho. As a hiker, I can attest that you should always carry a paper map bc technology has batteries and if they get spent, you have no idea where you could be.
Things like the Butterfly Effect and Sliding Doors are so fascinating and spooky to me. One harmless choice or mistake... choosing to stay at the lodge... one moment of being distracted and missing your exit... if the vandals hadn't opened that gate... can change the course of your life and the lives of others. What a great man though. His family must be very proud
You gotta look up that Mr ballen episode where he talks about that family that was in a religious cult, and the son was the prophet. It’s a messed up story bro. Put that shit up and watch it with us. You’ll go crazy I promise!
They were on a logging road that was supposed to be gated shut but vandals broke the gate. No one should've been on that road so they wouldn't have searched there if not for those footprints.
not only was the location supposed to be a place where you shouldn't of been able to drive to, they could of feasibly been any place between their friend in Oregon and San Francisco and they made the decision to go to that lodge on the fly so no one knew they were going there.
How does he know what the dude did? I don't know sometimes about these stories - he offers information that is speculative but in a convincing manner ; )
Shouldn't have to say this but, don't ever eat poop lol especially from a bear, almost all of them have parasites, especially worms. There's many videos of bears with worms hanging out of their butt, and they're not little either, some are many feet long lol If you're really desperate and it's winter and can't find anything to eat, look for a pine tree and scrape off the outer bark to get to the white edible layer that's underneath it, it's packed with sugars that will keep you going
Good point about it not mattering which way he went! It only mattered that he had the heart and determination to save his family. What a hero ❤ i bet hed make that choice to sacrifice his life for his family's 100 out of a 100 times
I wonder who won the fight about who was to blame? Just one bad decision after another. This guy did not have any luck aside from dying before his wife brought that shit up every time he messed up afterwards.
I wonder if he knew the distance and told her it was shorter to male her less worried. That would also explain him leaving the road if he thought there was a shortcut. The wife and children surviving because of his tracks give me some peace of mind for this story.
I’m from Colorado. I know what this $hit is like. I’ve never been through this. But I’ve been stranded in the mountains in this type of weather. It’s scary.
Such a sad story & it’s horrible that his footprints were the reason his family survived. Stay with ur car unless u see help. The police never sent search & rescue 4 my 88yr old pop until the next afternoon. Saying he probably just went for a drive. It was over 115-120degrees US.🇺🇸 he died the first night & could’ve found him. Aussie heat is very unforgiving.
What I don't understand is why the father waited so long in the car with the family. Just go back the way you came on your own and look for a cell phone signal instead of sitting in the car with your family for days and doing nothing. After the second night at least.
Reacting to this story is especially relevant because the Siskiyou mountains where this happened just got a bunch of snow the past couple days. I know this because I’m a gay Oregonian.
No, you can't pull over, your car will get buried, and it will get hit by a plow or another car... it's a horrible situation.... it shows feet in hours in the mountains of Oregon or California... then you gotta worry about avalanches...
Top three stories that sound fake but are 100% real...part 11 Mr ballen💯 best one, it includes a horrible man called denis neilson who lived in my city Aberdeen/fraserburgh.. one sick individual I think even you will be lost for words...as we say in the UK he's a proper wrongun
Just came back from working away for the last fortnight so have a lot of Frankensteins lab to catch up but just wondered if someone in the comments could give me an update on how Rondo is doing please?
Rondo lost everything in an apt. complex fire. A link to his gofundme is in the description box. He writes about what happened in some detail. It will take time to recover, both financially and emotionally. I'll keep posting this until he returns, hoping those who can help, will.

These stories just end up making me angry. As a father and husband, I can not imagine being that ill prepared when traveling with my family. I stock our families vehicles with at least a few days worth of food, water and survival supplies like space blankets. It's always better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

How are you going to start a fire in the middle of nowhere in the winter where all the wood is attached to a tree and also WET. Try and think.

I thought the whole family was going to be goners. That was a sad story but a story of love.
"Man, you and these detours!" I larfed.
I remember this story. The husband/father was from CNET. I used to watch the TH-cam channel years ago, and was shocked it was him.
