    Dear Mr Collins. Thank you so very much for posting this tutorial. Now in my 70s I live in enforced isolation in my adapted apartment in this lovely market town of Bridport, Dorset, England. Most fortunately, shortly before Lockdown, a couple of friends visited me. At my request, suspecting a long period in solitary confinement, they brought with them a thousand or more old photo prints and slides; also countless negatives. Some extending well back into the 19th Century. Knowing that lack of direction and motivation were more of an immediate challenge to me than coronavirus itself. The fact of the matter is that coronavirus kills. Prolonged isolation, however, destroys. Rather death than a living death. I need to learn a new skill. Pretty much from scratch. Thus, my photo restoration project. Again, my thanks and very good wishes to you, and those you hold dear, and all those who benefit from your wisdom. Paul Dawson.

    Thanks for getting back to me. I also would like to know if there is a significant difference between the Apple Raw converter and the Photoscape X Raw Converter? Witch one do you use? I do all of my editing on an IMac 27. What I am going to do is standardize all of my RAw image processing on this application. I purchased the Pro version. It was cheap enough and I used the HDR tool and it is very nice! I also use Affinity as well for their Mac.

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not used apple's raw converting software before. I would suspect that it works similarly, but for best results I'm sure Adobe software still wins out.

    • @imae5566
      @imae5566 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathan Collins The reason why I am asking is that in the Preferences, you can either use the Apple converter or the Photoscape converter. It really doesn’t matter that much because if you are going with RAW before editing, then you be changing the RAW rendition anyway. So the best way is to test each one out and then see which one is more accurate.

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@imae5566 I see. I'm a PC guy so I wouldn't be able to test that, but I believe both of them would be very similar. The best way to test is to do the same process on both converters and zoom into the pictures and see which one is better.

    • @imae5566
      @imae5566 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nathan Collins You are absolutely correct. Apply the same corrections to both versions of the RAW converter and see which one is better. I would wager, that they aren’t that much different.

    Great tutorial, Thanks. 2 questions: 1 - In outdoor shots, often someone's face is in full or partial shadow, while the overall image is bright. Is there any way to brighten just the areas in shadow? 2 - when scanning old slides, often the colors have deteriorated. Epson scanners have an option feature called "color restoration" which helps, but if you have an image scanned by another scanner, you need help. Does Photoscape X have a color restoration feature?

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes both of those features are in PhotoScape X. The first one would probably be achieved by using a brush feature in the tools tab. The second one would be achieved by using some adjustment sliders in the color tab or in the brush tab if you are going to manually adjust specific colors. This weekend I'll be making more tutorials so I will see about making a video answering those questions. Feel free to subscribe so you don't miss those videos.

    • @BriNathanCollins

      That is kind of odd. It looks like if you click on the image you're able to delete it out of the collage. I guess you'd have to do that if you wanted to start fresh. The only other option I could find is if you close out a photoscape x and you go back in. I'll keep looking but that is a good thing to note. Thank you.

    Great tutorial, thanks. One question: can I import photos from my camera directly into Photoscape?

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using the viewer tab in photoscape x you'll be able to favorite the folders that have your photos in them and that essentially is importing your photos to photoscape x. Some software's like Lightroom and Photoshop requires you to import your photos because they have a lot of extra processing that is helpful for advanced edits.
      Let me know if that answers your question or what you exactly mean by import.

      I looked over the software the best I could and I was not able to find any way to change the unit of measurement to inches. I also was not able to find a way to add a ruler to the editing view after cropping.
      My suggestion would be to learn or have a cheat sheet for the measurement equivalents from inches to millimeters (for common measurements that you will use).
      Here is a link to some screenshots of me searching around for those options: photos.app.goo.gl/3m4UosxiTYeghwQB8
      By the way, what kind of photo work are you doing? This might help me to get a better understanding of how to help solve this issue for you.

    • @imae5566
      @imae5566 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nathan Collins Well i do a lot of printing at home. So for example, I can printout 13x19 prints. If I want to print the shot at 12x18 to allow for a mat, then I need to be able to change the document size as you would in any other photo editing software. Affinity allows you to do this. Of course, you have to be happy with the crop so not to cut out any of the original that you want in the finish cropped image. I still have high hopes for this software and I like the tools that you can use to just edit a portion of the photograph such as vibrancy, sharpen, saturation, etc. This is what I was doing with Lightroom before I stopped using it due to the subscription nonsense. When I get back into taking pics, I will post some using this app. Thanks for your expeditious replies.

    • @BriNathanCollins

      For the borders you're able to change some of the borders to different colors, textures, change the opacity. Unfortunately not all borders are able to have the color changed.
      if you are in the viewer and you right-click on a photo you can go down to "metadata ➡️ edit metadata" then when you are in edit metadata you can add a keyword or keywords to the image. After that if you are wanting to search for those keywords you can go to the top right in the viewer and select the pull down and click custom (ctrl+f). In the custom search you will be able to select The key word you want to filter for.
      when you go to select a color whether using the draw tool or any color selector in photoscape x you can put in the number value at the bottom left hand of the box. Also on the top of the box there are a list of ways to select the color such as the color wheel or the RGB, etc.

    Thank you for the wonderful guide into this tremendous program for us beginners. I do have a question....is it possible to select an object in your photo (for example , the moon in a starry, night sky) and shrink or enlarge it? I would have thought that this would be a straightforward task, but I have played around with all of the tools in Photoscape X and have read/watched multiple tutorials and I cannot seem to find an answer. Thanks again for the great work!

      Check out this video on the liquefy tool: th-cam.com/video/biCgrantC94/w-d-xo.html
      Another method would be to use the "cut out" tool. I'll make a video on it and share it with you. Thanks for the question!

      Thanks! Liquefy (using bloat and pucker) did the trick. I was trying the cut out tool to see if I could cut the object, copy it to the clipboard and then paste and then resize the pasted image but I could not figure out how to do it. Thanks for the help.

    Great video but the software is just okay. I found you cannot print 4X6 borderless photos. Plus while trying to figure this out half the time after I hit print the software switched the paper size to letter. Fun software to play with but not so great for actually printing.

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the printing on photoscape X does leave a lot to be desired. I feel that the main pros for PhotoScape X is the simplicity of photo editing and graphic design using layering.

      @BriNathanCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, using the "Cut Out Tool you can cut out objects and the paste them back into the photo as many times as you like. I'll look into making a video on that topic.

    Thank you for this video but I don't have the time to go through it. It would help enormously if you were to list the Contents under topics like they do in many TH-cam Album music
    In the More section, they list the time in the video where each song starts ant then the name of the song.
    Eg. 00:25 Dance Monkey so you would do 00:05 Introduction to Video
    03:45 Bad Guy 01:05 How to use the Draw Tool
    06:21 Let It Be 02:26 How to use the Paint Tool
    03:78 How to use the Eraser Tool
    Many people don't have the time to go through a long video to find what they need
    but know that TH-cam channeler gives good clear advice in their videos and would like to
    get any information from that person.
    A list of the time and subject save us a lot of precious time and would make your videos
    more popular!

    With the artist's proficiency with the product he has lost the ability teach a beginner how to use it. Simply unable to keep it simple. I'm doubting a beginner is concerned about flagging there photos at this point. Have yet to find a user friendly tutorial about this product.

      @@BriNathanCollins An easy fix is to bring a novice in the tutorial and have the person perform a basic task with you . Such as colorizing a photo. This benefits the beginner as it has to slow down the teacher as well. This should have a big influence on how much the teacher has to strip down the basics for beginners to understand
