Serotonin Syndrome

  • Serotonin syndrome symptoms can tell us a lot about the normal physiological and neurological function of serotonin (also known as 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-HT), which is the neurotransmitter molecule that gives this condition its name. This condition arises when there is too much serotonin in the body and brain, so antidepressants and other drugs that increase serotonin place you at greater risk of developing it if you overdose.
This video explains what this condition is, how it arises, who is at risk, what makes it different from a related condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and what serotonin syndrome tells us about what serotonin’s job is in the brain in normal circumstances.

Just went through this this weekend. Never imagined i could be in that much distress and not be dying. The diarhea and vomiting(while menstruating, mind you. I know that's hard for some men to get) bruised my stomach muscles, my jaw and face were swollen, and i couldn't sleep for more than 30 minutes. There's so much to what i went through. I didn't wear pants for days(every time i vomited i also experienced diarhea). I lost all cognition, couldn't speak right, or type right, couldn't eat anything, everytime i drank water i puked it up.
Pretty disappointed in my local er. Went in, in beginning stages, was released and called an addict. I have a pain management agreement, i want looking to get high, i was looking to not feel like i was having a heart attack and dying

I was given 150 mg Effexor ER twice daily supply of 30 for 30 days for brain swelling caused by c19. Base facts about me,I have ptsd from professional careers and take prazosin prior for night terrors . Un noticed by doctors I was started on venlafaxine for c19 issues which isn’t correct. Also having 15 days of withdrawals with maximum dosage to kill a horse . I have begged for help and only give more antidepressants for my complaints finally someone gave me Prozac and Venlafaxine together man I felt so amazing like near death but nobody cares . Doctors are currently still practicing medicine on me . Stay tuned on my long term health issues that nobody understands because of long term SS toxicity levels and c19 My ptsd is like super ptsd now manic . Thanks 🙏🏿 great video

I gotta comment, because I have the same issues. I have 3 blown vertebrae and shoulders both have multiple tears. I kept telling them it hurt more than they implied. 1 year later, I asked for a second opinion. Within FIVE MINUTES, the orthopedic doctor told me I have cervical kyphosis in my neck. There's no surgical fix for women my age. Looked into it after the surgeon said he wasn't willing to operate, as success in my age demographic and sex is super low😢
I just went into the er, going through this, and they dismissed me entirely and sent me home. I've never been more irritated and angry, since that 5 minute kyphosis diagnoses. They had those mris and x-rays at my last doctor, without even looking

I'm loving thes videos and learning agreat deal about asubjec that Istudied during the 70s but has clearly moved on so much since then.
Howvwer, I do have a very simple request but one which I think would help many people a great - and would definitely help me! The request is, could you number the videos in their title so that we follow them in a structured sequence?
I have watched 5 videos so far and so was surprised to hear you say, at the beginning of this one, that this was the FIRST in a mini series!
I understand that the videos may well stand alone but, it can be very helpful to students to feel as though they are learning in a structured, coherent, way - even if such structure is not absolutely necessary. (I speak as a retired teacher.)
This doesn't in anyway detract from the information given, nor the style you use - both of which I think are very good.
Thanks for the time and energy you put into these series Andrew, it is greatly appreciated. 👍

Thanks for creating the great videos. I'm wondering if you're able to produce a video specifically related to the role of serotonin in GI disorders. Also, could you please explain how to interpret high urine 5-HIAA levels? I'm unclear if that means the serotonin levels are too high or perhaps that serotonin is too low as it's being converted to 5-HIAA and subsequently excreted. Thanks for your consideration.

Wished you had mentioned sumatriptan. Thank you for a great presentation.

This happened to me after taking sumatriptan (generic imitrex) for the first time after a migraine aura began a few years ago. Within an hour, I was sweating profusely, extremely nauseous and anxious, and cognitively mixed up - I could not read or formulate sentences, it was so scary. I threw the box away asap!

It would be interesting to compare serotonin syndrome to hyperthyroidism or thyroid storm, Panic disorder, IBS D, hyperadrenergic POTS and menopause hot flashes. I was prescribed Lexapro for panic disorder. It made my panic attacks worse.

I’m sorry to hear you went through that! I know a few people who have too, and it does not sound like fun.

Have you ever seen this happen to someone just taking Prozac, same dose for years with no other meds except Xanax, no otc stuff, no street drugs, not even caffeine. I’m terrified this is going to randomly happen to me but I’m so cautious I don’t even take Tylenol.
