      Very true, the pretentiousness of society makes you believe it’s accepted which I fell into the trap. As a man with depression, you show moments of weakness which a society of predators will prey on. The women won’t also see you as a stable option either which becomes another frustration. You literally have to keep quiet while they advertise on social media that ‘men need to open up more’. Male suicide is another epidemic in which society pretends to care which brainwashes you into thinking you can which only has the result of you being used in a dog eat dog society. The way to win is ‘stay quiet, speak with actions’. Drop off the face of the earth, use that private time to progress in life and come back humble, in shape and stay quiet so your mouth doesn’t get you into trouble with saying too much.

    0:24 The acting in Tony's eyes is so marvelous. First he suspects Chris has depression too. He feels for him and wants to open up and share this moment with his nephew, but then catches himself.. knowing his nephew isn't supposed to know. He quickly glances down to think of a way of knowing more without outing himself. He asks him the "sleeping" question then he looks away, feeling kinda guilty that he's not letting his guard down.

      A lot of people say Tony was pure evil, and to be fair especially towards the end he was really hard to defend, but in my opinion he was just a broken and lost soul, he grew up in the lifestyle with his dad and all, but he had a heart, he wasn’t evil just for the fun of it…….his childhood and environment shaped him into who he became to make a living, but besides that he wasn’t a bad guy, he just struggled with mental health and would have whether he was a mob boss or if he was a math teacher, ironically I think his mental health issues made him more humble and human, he understood the pain of the “happy wanderers” or whatever he called them……mental health strips a man of his confidence, pride, and in Chris’s case with self medicating, his dignity……depression has haunted me my whole life……i turned to drinking like Chris did to self medicate and I became a person I wasn’t to proud of, am I evil for the things I did? Or was I just broken? Either way great show, really makes you think

    This show was so much deeper than it gets credit for. The whole mafia thing could be completely removed and it could have been about an average middle class family in New Jersey and it would have still been interesting

    • @philipdraper7284
      @philipdraper7284 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree to some extent but they needed something more intriguing to move the plot along, which is where the mafia context fits like a glove. Also, the mafia represents traditional values of patriarchy, religion, family….all gradual concepts eroding and evaporating in the modern america of the show and within Tony’s real life family. The show is his struggle to rectify and complement those 2 very similar, yet very different, worlds.

    I don’t care if it’s the mafia in a 90’s show or in real life 2023. There’s still a huge stigma to having depression. I think it’s even worse for men. People can say they understand but the truth is most don’t and if you admit it you are looked at as weak or lazy, and then there’s no going back. Anyway great scene that feels like a realistic conversation.

Tony, whose on Prozac, thought about ending his life most likely, and has depression asked the same types of questions Melfi would ask and Christopher played it strong. So Tony pretends to agree to not look weak, mocking people who end their life and calling them "pathetic". Sad scene really. He didn't want to be alone.

    Seeing this scene again makes me realize how morbidly funny their whole interaction is, they can't even discuss depression in a serious manner both have this masculine bravado that they show to themselves and their crew so now they have to keep up this front at all times since showing sincere empathy is weakness in their eyes (especially in the life they lead) also Tony doesn't want anyone one to know that he's getting therapy either, even if he was trying to be sly with his knowledge of depression, then Tony counteracts it with both of them just laughing it off by downplaying suicide. Type A personality shit right there.
