I think it breaks the cycle of people’s narcissism when it comes to how they view their life. Thinking there has to be so much weight around your life story and there has to be a structure. Things can get better and I’m sure you’ve seen that in some way since you posted this comment. But it starts with you. You need to start making positive changes in your life and stop waiting around for something to inspire you. That thing is never going to come. No one is ever going to do it for you. So you need to start taking care of yourself and thinking proactively when it comes to making your life better. As you make small steps it will be easier than you think and pretty soon you won’t recognize yourself at all. But it’s all about your mentality. If you choose to lead a purposeless life, then it truly is a big nothing. But in the end that choice is yours. So make it now and start living a life of purpose.

Either way it’s not an appropriate thing to say to your grandson lol. And really she’s not. She is correct about her own life but that’s a choice she made. You can choose for your life to mean something and happiness is something you can cultivate by making the right decisions.
