  • Spinners play a key role in all teams, at all levels, across all format, with many of the most successful bowlers of all time being spinners.
    Bowling spin is something we think everyone should try, and the basics are often overlooked in favour of teaching everyone to bowl seam.
    In this video Ed takes a look at the basics of finger spin bowling, including grip, wrist position, and how to generate those all important revolutions on the ball. As a former first class spinner it's great to hear Ed going back to basics and covering some of the key points that all spinners rely on to execute their skills.

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Fahim. That is usually a lack of focus, which therefore means you get distracted, and your body tenses up and either don't complete action (full toss), or hold ball too hard in hand/just use bowling shoulder to bowl (drag down short). Try and find a routine that is repeatable. Having a repeatable action, and a solid routine that helps you remained focus really helps with consistency. Hope this helps.

    Just chanced upon this gem. Having got back into cricket after a decade, all my off spinners come out as undercutters "the flying saucer". When you said about seamer wrist cocking position it all made sense.
    Hopefully I can relearn off spin. Im getting good rpm, its just the seam angle is all wrong.

    Great spin tutorial, can you also explain the different variations that a finger spinner can bowl? Some of them I know are top spin, arm ball, slider, under cutter...

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment Maroof. Main variations from off spinners are subtle, like the arm ball (quick through the air, seam up straight so ball can swing), or the ball that slides on (misses the seam on bounce), which is basically an under cutter. Other variations are produced by using different areas on the crease, as well as changing the height of your arm on release. Hope this helps.

    I believe that the holy grail of finger spin bowling is imparting top spin. And i don’t think you can impart top spin if your wrist is cocked or the fingers are too tight around the ball (i struggle with this myself). The way i like to think about this is, i like to feel that my triceps are rotating if my wrist is cocked my forearms get too tight and i can’t go up the back of the ball. Have seen a lot of tennis coaches say this about hitting with top spin too. You can’t impart top spin on the ball in tennis if your wrist is locked or your grip is too tight

    2> what will be the strategy against left hand batters for left arm orthodox spin bowlers?

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anirban, it is sometimes harder to grip a newer ball, white balls are easier than red balls to grip, but still make sure you have a grip that you feel confident and in control with, so you can still spin the ball. Make sure you're trying to spin the ball, see how the pitch reacts, and make sure you are hitting the stumps every ball, as this puts the batter under most pressure. 2) When the ball is spinning into the batter, it is technically easier for them. We must either try and make them against the spin into the off side, so they create a gap between bat and pad, allowing the ball to pass, or we make them play across the ball square onto leg side, when we are hitting the stumps. Using your field is very important. You can also go around the wicket, to try and pitch the ball in line with the stumps, and get LBW. Hope that helps.

    Brilliant content, thank you, I’m struggling because (although I’ve never previously thought about it) I always use my thumb (right handed bowler) as the main adder of spin. I’ve tried the technique you suggest (on my sofa), and while it feels less affective, I know it must be better, especially watching examples in real matches, how do I change? I must watch more videos of spin bowlers to improve (this is my first ever) You’ve made me reconsider my whole technique. (It’s made me reconsider how I use the seem, I’ve previously always gone seem up and made my wrist add the ‘angles’ especially as I like to make the occasional ball go away) Thought provoking, but no promises, but I will try. Go 🤙

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Don’t worry, there’s a lot of trial and error with bowling. Seeing what works, what doesn’t. Some people like their thumb on the ball as it provides more support, and bowlers feel more in control. Nothing wrong with it, just got to understand the limitations to these things.

      A lot of it is trial and error, experimenting, trying different wrists positions, getting a feeling for different angles of your wrist. Having the body awareness of knowing the angle of your wrist is on release can help you put different spin on the ball. Have fun playing around with it. Maybe try to use a two coloured ball to check the spin on the ball and which way the seam is pointing mid air.

      Your grip is down to individual preference, and whatever feels naturally to A) get spin on the ball, and B) allow the ball to come out at the top of your bowling action, so you don’t bowl full (release early) or a drag down (release late).
      Just be warned that if you grip tight and have a tense wrist and forearm, then you fingers won’t be able to flick as quickly and your wrist won’t be able to release, so you could lose out on spin.

    Sir I'm a very quick action bowler, a very quick arm bowler(leg spinner) like rashid khan. This quality is natural. So shall I be a bowler who bowls both his leg break and googly from back of the hand, like mystery spinner as my arm speed is quite high. So batsman would be confused to pick me. Sir plz give your advice

    • @InFormCricket

      Always make it hard for the batter to pick you! But variations need to be accurate, that's the real skill. Be relentless in your accuracy, then batters will be under more pressure to pick your deliveries as they will be threatening the stumps. Keep things as natural as possible. Good luck.

    As a batsman ! How to check (arm /straight )bowl of left arm spinner ?

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you mean how do you pick the arm ball or straight ball as a batter? Definitely look for seam rotation. But key fundamentals still apply - either try to smother bounce of ball (hit ball as soon as it bounces) - therefore has no time to spin or go straight, or get as far away from the bounce of the ball to allow yourself time to adapt to spin or the straight ball. It’s also a good idea to play for the straight ball if doubt as if you miss a straight ball you are definitely out, but if the ball spins past your outside edge - you live to play the next ball.

    I'm a left-armer. I have tried using a red and white ball and noticed that when I hold the white side on the left and pointing the seam toward the left 45 degree, the white side actually ends up on the right side in the air, and the seam pointing to the right. I think it has back spin. Why does it flip over? What is going wrong?

      Hi Awais, remember to use your whole body to spin the ball. Transfer your weight forward onto your front leg to release the ball, and make sure you pivot 180 degrees. Have momentum through the crease, in the bowling action, and towards the target, this allows your pivot and rotation of your body to be quicker, meaning your bowling arm can come over quicker.

But you don't want it to be forced, you want it to be rhythmical, like you are running on clouds, and not running the 100m against Usain Bolt. This is preference, Graeme Swann use to run in, and Nathan Lyon starts off by walking, and accelerates with a couple of steps to go before his take off. Try out some different methods, but you want to make sure you are accelerating at least two steps before taking off. Hope this helps.

    One of the problems I've never been able to solve is the post delivery stride. I stop the moment the ball is delivered from my hand. There's no follow through. And when I tend to focus more on the follow through i bowl full tosses or overpitched deliveries. My action isnt free flowing like Rangana Herath, Jack Leach, Vettori's. I need extra effort to land the bowl on right areas. I get a good spin though. But my line and length isnt consistent when I focus on the follow through. Can you suggest me some drills as to how to overcome this? I've tried many things but my body is just used to stop right at the moment the ball is delivered. And Btw, nice video

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! This is a common issue so don't worry. It is a combination of a lack of momentum and not using your front arm to rotate your body. You need momentum before you enter the crease, so you keep that pace to get your body towards the target while you bowl. Your front arm rotates your body. You can do this easily by using your front arm more. Start with your front arm (non bowling arm) straight up (12 o'clock on clock face), and then complete your bowling action, but make sure your front arm finishes back up at the same position. So it completes a full circle. This helps you rotate your body fully, which helps get spin on the ball, but also helps your body keep moving towards the target, which is very important. Hope this helps.

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hardhawardhan, they both have there positives and negatives. If you can be confident bowling wrist spin then it’ll give you the best chance of being successful, as you can spin the ball both ways - but is much harder to bowl than finger spin. The majority of batters are right handed, so being able to spin the ball away from the right hander may be an advantage. Finger spin is more common, so if you’re looking to stand out, then leg spin would work. Hope this helps.

    What happens if i spin it cross seam? Will it turn?

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, good question. The spin off the pitch is created when the seam digs into the surface, grips and then changes direction. So type of surface has an impact on degree of spin, as well as number of rotations on ball (more rotations = more spin). So it can spin holding the ball cross seam, if the seam makes contact with the surface. If not it’ll skid on, like we saw when England played India in the test series. Becomes difficult for batters to predict if one spins and one goes straight. Hope this helps.

    How bowl flyte ?

    • @InFormCricket
      @InFormCricket  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vivek, in order to get the ball above the batter’s eyeline (and entice them into a big shot), we must flight the ball. But we must still spin the ball so the ball dips and drops, and causes the batter to mis-read the length of the ball, hopefully resulting in a loss of timing and a mistake. In order to flight the ball, we must find the right pace to bowl (generally a flighted delivery is slower), and a quicker ball will have a flatter approach the batter from your release point. Try and imagine there is a piece of string half way down the wicket, at around head height, and see if you can bowl over the string and still hit a good length. Good luck.
