Some BTS if anyone cares. I was a music video editor once upon a time and I had the pleasure of cutting this video. I got a call from a producer friend who said the record company had pulled the edit from the director because they didn't like where it was going... overall "Not enough energy" etc. I thought it was Atlantic Records, but google says Electra? Anyway, I was knee deep in the music video editing world back then and it always struck me as fascinating how unglamorous it all was... a lot of late nights in creepy buildings... a lot of drugs (usually just coffee for me, someone had to drive the boat!) but always a lot of fun and creatively rewarding. I spent approx 48hrs re-cutting this video from scratch, left mostly alone in a cold tin-roof warehouse style editing bay just on the west side of LA (called "Ontime Offline"). The director was Gerald Casale from DEVO fame, and I never met the guy... but felt bad so I wrote him a note apologizing for being the dude cutting up his vision (I was a huge DEVO fan), and I said something like "I hope I did the song justice":-) No surprise I never heard back from him, but my conscious is clear! SO... seeing this video many years later is a nostalgic and surreal experience that reminds me of a past life... and a moment in time where I stayed up for 2 days pouring my creative heart into a very cool song for four talented guys I would never meet.
I just learned of his passing on the comments a few weeks ago...I just could not bring myself to acknowledge it. I had to listen to all of the music. He was such a genius on the drums and harmonies
My old guitar player introduced me Hum & Chavez on the same day. He burned me a copy of every album. That was a damn good day. RIP Cliff, you were a damn good friend who showed me some damn good music.
You just brought back memories. I had Hum on all the time to and from a session. Just sets the mood. I go into the water with not an ounce of anger and no matter the wave size or quality it will be a good session.
I wanna say thank you to those French skateboarders for introducing me to this band . I’m 30 yrs old now and still getting put onto awesome music from skate vids which has been the case since I was about 10 years old . It never ends.
I consider myself extremely blessed to have seen Hum on the "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" tour at Rockafellas in Columbia, SC. They sounded just like the album. The imagery they used fit their music so perfectly. That album is still one of my favorites of all time. One of the very few bands that were able to set themselves apart from everyone else with their unique space rock sound. Fyi, they are supposed to be putting out a new album in 2019.
The music gods were with me when I came across this album at random in a discount bin at Circuit City over twenty years ago. Brilliant song by a gifted band.
Im so grateful i got to see them in santa ana California back in the 90s at a small cafe named koos cafe, it was all green to me. So underrated and phenomenal musicians
Best concert I've ever seen! Hum at Mabel's in Champaign, IL circa 1996. I think they blew my eardrums out, as I was standing in the front row right under those gigantic speakers. No band plays with the same bass. Incredible!

I learned of this band just after they were in my area on tour (Nashville) and I so desperately want to see them live. Their new album is awesome but this one is my favorite.
I confused the heck out of our "alternative rock" channel when they played this and I called asking when the new album was coming out and the djs had no idea what I was talking about. It turns out one of their producers was also a huge Hum fan and had snuck it into the daily rotation. Needless to say I was standing at the music store at opening to buy one of the dozen or so copies they received. I still have that disc along with my second copy of You'd prefer seeing as how I actually wore out the first disc with little mini scratches from my crappy cd player.
I dont THINK ive seen this music video before. But i have a very vivid dream of being 4 years old and shopping for halloween masks with my parents while “boy with stick” by hum played in the background. And they had a music video for it playing (which doesnt exist) and i see that green effect this video has in it. Its just so weird to me. Green to me.
that tortoise is probably still alive today.
That tortoise rocks
That tortoise will outlive us all, dude.
And its ears are still ringing
😂
@@ibelieveicansoar they say that tortoise can still hear a slight HUM

Great story man. Thanks for sharing with us HUM fans so many years later.
Thank you for sharing this story, I love hearing anything I can about Hum, my second favorite band following Deftones
@@corey6393 You are very welcome! That was a fun exercise for me to write it out and relive that little special adventure in my life/career :-)
That combination of a soothing voice with those chuggy ass guitars. Hum’s style is ridiculously good.
Yes
That’s their allure for me. Heavenly droning and endless feedback
All my guitar player friends were obsessed with Hum. Their sound just cut through all the Nirvana wannabe crap on the radio like a knife.
this soothing voice and heavy, chuggy guitars... i ride my skateboard into the astral realm.
Would not have Deftones without them, that's for sure.
I cannot emphasize enough how good this song is
Agreed!!
Hello mr afternoon with the axolotl s
Honestly one of the more exotic sounds of the 90s these guys had over many bigger bands of the 90s!!
@@wolf42i40 True. This honestly sounds like a 2004 jam
@@JChappy64 What'd u think of the new album?
Rest in Power Bryan St. Pere. 🙏 Big fan of your band since 1995 - Lew from The Philippines 🙏
What a fucking blow. I couldn't believe it when I heard this afternoon.
When I heard Bryan died I was like "Oh no.!!" Bryan was a surgeon on those drums.
Musta Na! From NC, USA! Pinoy know good music!!
I just learned of his passing on the comments a few weeks ago...I just could not bring myself to acknowledge it. I had to listen to all of the music. He was such a genius on the drums and harmonies
Adding to my comment he was an absolute killer on the drumset! He will be absolutely missed
HUM kicks ass. A forgotten band from the 90s that should have been bigger.
This is, in my opinion, their best song
Kermit would agree wholeheartedly
Criminally underrated!
This band is the 90's best kept secret. Criminally underrated
I've always loved Matt's "matter of fact" vocal style with those crushing riffs in the background. So good.
Matter-of-fact is the perfect way to put it haha. Never found a way to express it in words.
We'll miss you Mr. St Pere
My old guitar player introduced me Hum & Chavez on the same day. He burned me a copy of every album. That was a damn good day. RIP Cliff, you were a damn good friend who showed me some damn good music.
Everyone needs to understand, this is downright peaceful compared to their live shows. Ungodly loud. They demolished every venue.
Used to listen to this on all my surfing trips with an old friend of mine... don't know where you are buddy, but I miss you.
You just brought back memories. I had Hum on all the time to and from a session. Just sets the mood. I go into the water with not an ounce of anger and no matter the wave size or quality it will be a good session.
It’s me ur buddy.
Sorry to hear your story.....always good to have some music to relate to and remember good times. Cheers
Ok, I don't usually jump on the underrated circlejerk for good bands that are little known, but I'm willing to grab some shafts on this one.
HA!!!
If I had a shaft I'd grab it for Hum
Did somebody say circlejerk ooooooo!!!!

Shoegaze that isnt afraid to chug on a cool heavy riff! Awsome!!!!
Very special band for those who know them well.
Rest in power Bryan St.Pere. Thank you for being part of the soundtrack to my high school experience and to everything else in the 23 years since
Had this album blasting while i played jedi knight 2 on my pentium 2 pos
Daaamn, that's exactly what I was planning to do right now, only difference I'm playing the port for Switch.
I was blasting this while playing KotOR 2
You take a calming voice like Matt Talbott and work into the midst of melodic chaos and this is the beauty of the HUM Sound
This song just rips. I love it so much. Like Iron Clad Lou
Deftones/ HUM tour please!
Perfect Combo. I'm in..
Throw some Failure in too and I'm game
Salute to all who listens to this masterpiece
THANK YOU!! Because it is a MASTERPIECE!!

Listening to HUM just makes me feel good and at peace. I'm glad I've discovered them.
I got this as an EP/demo/whatever in the mail from them when it was new. It exploded like a supernova and has never faded.
The music gods were with me when I came across this album at random in a discount bin at Circuit City over twenty years ago. Brilliant song by a gifted band.
same, but it was blockbuster music ...btw sweet last name
near tears when you guys played this in Charlotte 2015 Finally saw you live after being a fan for decades. Worth the wait!
Such a great band. Should have been more popular than they got
20 years later and still great.
RIP Bryan St. Pere 😭
Really like this one! Missed it back in the day. Glad l discovered it here in 2024!
So many great memories blasting this album in my shitty car in high school. Love this band soooo much.
this was my first hum song :) it was a downward spiral of hum from there. my favourite band ever.
One of the most influential bands of the 90s. Their impact on heavy music is still relevant today. Enjoy the new album everyone!
I cannot believe this song has not had more views. This band is sooooo good an so underappreciated.
This band and more specifically this jam got no where near the recognition it deserves
The 90's music always hits different. Would love to go back in time.
the weird building they're in is the "chemosphere house" in LA if anyone's wondering
absolutely need to pass by it if i’m ever in LA again
I was actually. I thought it looked a bit like the Sheats-Golstein House. Both designed by the same guy, I believe.
I was listening to this in 1998, and it's just as good in 2024.
Im so grateful i got to see them in santa ana California back in the 90s at a small cafe named koos cafe, it was all green to me. So underrated and phenomenal musicians
I still surf daily to this album...over 2 decades later.✌🌎

I'm in love with this band... beautiful music

One of the greatest songs I have ever had the upmost pleasure of listening to. Thank you Hum for this fantastic music.
The morning image from the satellite is all blue and green
And we've all got wounds to clean
Here's a rag, here's some gasoline
She wakes up fine and rested well, released at last from in the sleeping cell
Breathing comes with ease, it's a sweet revenge
Built on a chemical ride, my medicine man is the best
Wires to the temples, lace them on, let's see how we sound
It's all green to me
What a sweet revenge
It's all green to me
I see them lift off one by one, I see a cool spot here, let's bring her down
Level to the ground, a lovely mess, that I am blessed to see, of me, of me
She lifts her wings up high, sends her shrill of a lifetime until we die
And all the dreams, details affected in the colored sky
The morning image from the satellite is all blue and green
And we've all got wounds to clean
Here's a rag, here's some gasoline
Lift up your skies and all the other times you realize
It lifts up your days in a single phase, I felt your hand
Lift up your skies and all the other times you realize
It lifts up your days in a single phase
for one brief shining moment music was perfect
Tim Lash, man that guy could thrash!
Awesome musicians Bryan was a phenomenal drummer
Must be played at optimum volume. So sweet and heavy.
