Fans laugh at kickers and punters but they are strategic pieces. When the ball is on their 40, you’re down two points and there’s two seconds on the clock you know why you have to pay up for a kicker. If anybody knows where the Bears could get an offensive line they would be good to go.
Bills drafted a punter that was averaging 79 net yards per punt in the pre-season until some chicky falsely accused him of r*pe. Now the Chiefs have him for some reason even though the Bills should have had first rights once his case was cleared.
NFL games are decided by points, kickers score the most of them, despite their lack of opportunities. Barring big plays an offense has 3+ opportunities to gain 10 yards to just reset the number of downs, all way down to the endzone. These players usually don't lose their jobs over a bad game, unless it's some third string RB who fumbles multiple times. Kickers have one singular opportunity to execute either an extra point or an FG of I don't know how many yards in which they suffer more from bad weather conditions than an offense (especially any wind). One bad game leading to losing their job, no starting position in the league has that low of a job security. It's not even about the technical ability to kick the ball, it's about being able to cope with the pressure. People talk usually about QB's when they talk about clutchness, but in reality it's really only the kickers you can judge whether they are clutch or not. It's why Vinatieri was so fucking great. Fans don't realise when they have it good when they go from a good kicker to a bad kicker and come into kicking purgatory. If there is one position underpaid in the NFL, it's these people. Moreso than RB's.
And, at times a missed field goal is not the kickers fault, it’s the holder’s error. I saw a kick yesterday that was going dead center then curved left and missed wide. At the time I told my wife that the laces were skewed left. After the commercial break the broadcast coverage came back and showed a close up. Bet the holder got his backside chewed after the kick. Anyway, subsequent holds were good and so were the kicks. If the ball curves off to the side you can bet the hold was bad Also, you need to take the long snapper into account. The ball needs to come to the holder at the correct height, speed, and placement. Lots of moving parts.
