The official release of HA 2025.1 is now out and I wanted to highlight this note from the developers: "If you are using any custom solution for backups, they will continue to work today. Even with everything new, we’ve made sure to keep everything backward compatible."
Encryption is mandatory on backups now, if you want to access the contents of your data in your backup you can't, if you lose your encryption key or do a clean install of HA you can't currently restore your encrypted backup, haven't they also taken away to option to backup an addon before upgrade as they have assumed everyone will use the new automated backup system - so much for them giving you options I enjoy as many videos as possible about upcoming features as I don't have the means to run my own beta environment
Yes, encrypted backups will be required. Based on online forums, it looks like opinions are mixed on this, for the reason you indicated about a desire for the user to have options.
Honestly, I don’t think they’re very helpful. (Not exclusive to your channel, but rather it extends to all creators covering the topic). Personally I’m not interested in what’s in the beta, but rather what makes it to full release
@@michaelsleen That's correct, of course with exceptions like you said. However, the my general disinterest in Release Overview Videos is that everybody makes one and pretty just reads the release notes to you. To make it more interesting and engaging, if you decide to make more release note videos, I would absolutely love to hear "why" the features are cool/uncool/useful/important. I want your opinions on the releases and how we may or may not benefit from those features! Having the notes just essentially read to me is boring and tedious to watch, no matter how much I generally enjoy any given creators other content. Haha, that said, I hope you take my opinion into consideration. Looking forward to your future videos!
Thanks for the video, I was wondering which tile cards you use at 2:47? I wish to add temp and humidity in one tile just like this but I can't seem to find a clear answer on how to do it! Thanks in advance for any information :)
I think they are useful when its demoing the functionality rather than reading release notes. I am wondering if the new backups feature has any effect on the google drive backup addon though. Will the google drive backup continue to work?
The Home Assistant Google Drive Backup solution has worked well for me. I suspect the developer will need to update the add-on to directly support backup syncing within Home Assistant after this release.

I wish they would make Homey Pro style flows, ie the ability to easily produce complex automations using a drag and drop visual method that requires zero programming skills. It’s by far the easiest and best system for non programmers (and probably faster for programmers too)

@ thanks for sharing. From what I’ve observed, most things featured in the beta make it to final release. Of course there are exceptions.

Mushroom Template cards. Video on this coming soon!
@michaelsleen thanks so much, I'll keep an eye out for the new video then!

The google drive backup addon system is fantastic but i so wish the same addon worked with other cloud storage services.
Hopefully we'll see this arrive in the near future since 2025.1 will open the doors for integrations to use the updated backup service.

Hmm just started with ha on proxmox, is it better to backup the vm or this way?
If you’re already running automated backups, then you’re likely fine. This is just making it easier for the average person to do that.

That would be really nice.
