How to Build Easy and Strong Storage Shelves

Link to tools I use: woodspirit.net... By using 2 x 4s and screws along with pre-cut OSB 2' x 8' sheets I built very strong and functional shelves that look nice too.

The support blocks are perfect, much better than just relying on the screws through the legs

I just finished building these shelves for my storage shed. Your video was a great help. For those needing a supply list, here is what I used for 3 shelves:
SHELF RAILS: 6-8 ft. 2 x 4 (2 for each shelf)
SHELF CROSS SUPPORTS: 15-21 inch 2 x 4 cross supports (5 for each shelf)
UPRIGHT SUPPORTS: 18-16 inch 2 x 4 upright supports (6 for each shelf)
UPRIGHT SUPPORT: 3-5 ft 2 x 4 long upright supports (I bought 2 10 ft. 2 x 4s and cut in half. I used the extra for the back filler pieces)
FILLER PIECES: Various sizes (mine varied between 14 3/8 to 14 5/8) to fill in behind shelves. I used 6 per shelf, so 18 total. I used some lumber scraps I had on hand and extra pieces I had left over.
SHELVES: 2-4 ft x 8 ft sheets of OSB (Oriented strand board) rip cut in half (Home Depot did it for free) to make the shelves which are 2 ft x 8 ft. You will have an extra shelf so I put the extra shelf on top for a later project. You could also use plywood, however it was nearly double the price of OSB.
SCREWS: 1 box of #9, 2.5 inch deck screws with star head drive ( a drill bit came in the box). The star head drive was much easier to drive the screws (better grip). You could use any screws made for decks or exterior use. I could not find 2.75 inch deck screws that's why I did not use them.
My total cost was approximately $106.00.

@@brucenessler1802 I built these yesterday. The OSB is held in place by the risers (uptight support). I secured the top OSB by screwing it in in center of the outside shelf rails. Probably wasn't necessary.

Finally, somebody who built their shelves properly. I have seen plenty of DIY videos on these and most just screw the wood pieces to each other using the fasteners to support the loads. Good job

I’m building 4 of theses and the price of 2x4’s is now $6 from $3 costing about $400.00. This is the correct way to build these type of shelves to handle any kind of load. Great job.

Simplicity at it's best. Strong shelf supports. This is the same structure technique I used while building my shop work bench. Incredibly strong and easy to build. No fancy tools required. Great build.

Wonderful video. I'm in the process of building my shelves using this as a guide. It is slow going for me since I'm 67 and have a weak grip, but nearly halfway done and they look great so far! The first shelf is as solid as a rock. I'm having to pre-drill everything due to my weak grip, but that's ok too. I love the tip about filling between the studs with scrap 2x4's. Strange, I've watched this video multiple times and was never bothered by the music.
I built these in my old garage and can tell you from experience...THEY ARE STOUT AND CAN HANDLE A TON OF WEIGHT! Honestly was overkill for what I needed but damn if these are not built to withstand the apocalypse! Great Build! Great Video. Now to build new ones for the new garage!
When you want to store really heavy weight such as multiple 5 gallon cans of paint or oil, this is the way to go. Great job!

I built these shelves today. It was a lot of work to fill the gaps between the studs, but when I started loading the shelves, I quickly realized how much extra space I got from them. This was incredibly helpful, thanks so much for these instructions. I have a lot more room in my shed now and it looks very professional, as I am not a carpenter by trade. I'm a computer guy!

Excellent! Two great techniques stand out - using 2X4 as supports (not just screws) and putting 2X4 block at back of wall to keep things from falling out. Well thought out! Thank you; I will be using these ideas on some storage I will build for a shed.
I didn't put the blocks between the wall studs because they area all slightly warped and different widths on my house and it would have take forever to measure and cut for each one. MY solution is that anything that can fall between the studs goes into a larger container. If I find this is a problem, I will just buy some cheap and super thin plywood and cover the back of the shelves. Probably would only need to be a few inches tall to keep things from falling behind the shelf.
Carl Perkins I like the idea but screws are more then enough for anything as long as you know where to place the 2x4
I really appreciate how the design of this method uses very uniform sizes for the cuts. So many plans will have 10 different size lengths of wood cuts, taking longer to prepare your pieces and more easily to get disorganized.

Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for. A nice solid shelf. Simple , Clear and Concise. Great job.
Just did something similar, but 4 shelves (about 7 feet tall) and 16 feet long. I built all the frames on one weekend and then cleared off the old shelves, tore them down and put together the new shelves. Probably took me about 24 hours (Two 12 hour days) on the hottest weekend this year. A few things to be aware of when doing this is to take note of how warped the walls and floor are. If you pre-cut the boards the way he did in this video, it will not go well.
What I did was temporarily screw a 2x4 into the studs to hold the shelf (make sure it is level). I then cut another board at approximately the height of the shelf to support the other end. Once I had the shelf propped up, I attached it to the wall. Next I used a clamp to position the first support 2x4 so that the shelf is perfectly level, then pre drilled and screwed it in, making sure the 2x4 is straight up and not leaning in any direction. After I repeated this for the next shelf, I removed the temporary 2x4 from the wall and measured and cut each of the support 2x4s that fit under the shelf. The bottom shelf is the hardest one to do. Once you have that one perfectly level, you can then install all your other supports and shelves the way he did in the video.
Another tip, if you are building a very long set of shelves is to do them in 8 foot segments and then screw the ends together for one long shelf. Also, if you don't have enough room so slide your shelf between the tall supports, put one of the supports on the end of the shelf temporarily, instead of the side, so you can put the shelf in from the front. Once you have all the shelves in, attach your support in it's final spot and remove the temporary support.
Finally, get some saw horses and build yourself a simple assembly table using 2x4s to support one of the MDF sheets. Building this many shelves on the floor is horrible for your back and knees (as I learned the hard way), and if your floor is very warped, it will make it very difficult to get all the cross pieces lined up correctly, which can lead to warped shelves .
If you don't have sawhorses, you can clamp a small piece of wood on either side of your cross braces to hold them in place against the longer 2x4s. Make sure each cross brace is square before attaching, or you will have problems later.

I built these last weekend, they are perfect. The height is dead-on for bins, allows me to stack two on top with about a foot of clearance to the ceiling. It's also solid as a rock. Thanks for helping people with minimal skills like myself.

I used this design for my new set of storage shelves in a basement. I made them free standing and only used legs at each corner but I expect these to hold up for a lifetime! I climbed into mine after completion too and they are very stable. Thanks for the great video!
Easily the strongest 2x4 shelving unit on youtube. This is how we build aquarium stands and racks. My only question is the compression of the OSB - is it affected? Sure is easier than cutting out all those notches though!
Great vid. I’m making mine right now and using GRK screws 3 1/8 “ to make the cross pieces, they are self tapping so no pre-drilling needed.
I just finished my setup based off of this video tutorial. I had to make some edits based on my garage. There was a concrete barrier at the bottom of the wall... So my first layer took the longest. There was a furout causing me to use spacers (3/4") to level out the wall. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out.

Jack studs is how I've always done it too. I'm too cheap to buy decent screws anyway. That and I'm going to inevitably load my shelves with a crazy amount of weight.

Awesome! It is the easiest and the most reliable shelves which I have seen.
Great shelf design. The only thing I'd change is the distance between the shelves...mighty tight when you have all that extra room above and considering that they aren't that tall in the first place. I think I'd add about 6 inches to the height between each selve. Building a set right now. Thanks and nice work.
My grandfather's favorite shelves. He taught me to build shelves like these when I was a kid. We use plywood for the shelves though. Much stronger and nicer surface. A fucking elephant could tap dance on shelves like that and they wouldn't mind.

I built pretty much the same shelf unit before only with leftover 2x3's instead of 2x4's. It was still strong enough to easily hold me and 10 times stronger than it had to be.
made a version of this today. 6 ft long two levels . top level I made a workbench top . LOVE it! on top I used two 3/4 pieces of very nice plywood. turned out great.

I once built a dog house out of Aspen Board and never bothered to give it a coat of paint. Five years later I passed the dog house on to another dog lover as I no longer had a dog. I don't know how long it lasted after that point or if they painted it, but Aspen Board is pretty durable. 3:35

i have a bunch of old hollow core doors , your video inspired me to make a frame and instead of the OSB I will use the doors as the shelves.. i dont have anything super heavy to store just need somewhere to put plastic storage containers -- and I have a concrete block building but i think the same principle will work , thanks for your video

This would be a great business to offer people who rent storage units. Because they (me) lol, typically set things on the floor. Then the space is not at all used wisely. Many people, may actually be able to rent smaller rental units if they had a means of organizing boxes and plastic totes more easily. Well done video.
