Indeed a voice of refinement, well studied interpretation, one can feel his submission knti the role he os not only lortaying but also each note vomes together with purity love and immense power. What a beautiful and great voice from a true artiste. Bless his memory.

In a Bastianini Collection that I have there are some excerpts from this performance. His scene with Boris Christoff here is fine as well & they both also made a studio recording of DON CARLO around this time which I also purchased & is, IMO, one of the best recordings of the 5 Act Italian version. Bastianini’s instrument is beautifully suited to this role.
What beautiful "golden age" singing, utterly without strain, and always with a beautiful line. This was the "norm" during this era, though I don't mean to suggest that Bastianini was not exceptional-he was. It's interesting to consider the contrast of someone like Sherril Milnes just a decade later-in the famous Giulini studio recording, though he also sounds marvelous-the younger singer goes through many "colorations" in between tessitura to hide the transitions. Though he does sound wonderful, the mannerism of the way he negotiates the transitions starts to be noticeable to the point of distraction. None of that kind of "negotiation" or compromise seems to be there in Bastianini and some of the greats of his generation.
Out of respect for fans i won't write this comment on a Hvorostovsky clip, but the difference between Bastianini and someone like DH is a chasm--- no comparison at all
