Here is some additional information that you may find interesting.
When Denmark was invaded, approximately 250 Danish ships and some 6000 sailors went into allied service. Of these 136 ships and about 1000 sailors were lost during the war.
After the war, Anders Lassens mother wrote a book about her son.
In it, there is a passage from his diary in 1942 when Major Gus March-Phillipps, the founder of No. 62 Commando, died during operation Aquatint, in which Lassen wasn’t participating.
“The only man I really liked and respected. He died fighting, leading his men - a worthy death for him. I wish I had been with him when it went wrong. All the other times we fought together - only not this last. Greatest sorrow I have had in this war - my best friend is dead”

Ahh I was aware of this book by his mother, Suzanne: Anders Lassen VC - The Story of a Courageous Dane… There’s an English translation but it’s long out of print and we couldn’t find a copy. The diary entry you quote (and the facts about the Danish shipping) is so very poignant and would have been so good to have included in this presentation for more context. Thanks very much for relating it here…

I’m not surprised - he’s such a legend. For my money he’s up there with the likes of Blair “Paddy” Mayne. “Anders Lassen VC the story of a courageous Dane” (1965), the biography by Suzanne Lassen - the English translation is a bit tricky to get hold of. Have you got it/read it?

    • @UlyssesFiles

As far as I could tell, over 6000 Danes (many of them actually ethnic Germans in Denmark) joined the Germans - and at least 1000 managed to reach the Allies and fight mainly with the British- as Anders Lassen did. It must also be said that many more Danes fought the Nazis in the Danish resistance.
