Some buildings are still here, but Norfolk was so much classier 100 years ago. I wish they had left downtown unchanged so we could compare locations today. When I see the picture of the monument at commercial place it makes me sad to see how much everything has changed. The worst atrocity might be union terminal. It was barely over 50 years old when they demolished it. In that location today sits the eyesore Harbor Park next to a giant ghetto. Whippee.
I remember seeing those old Victorian buildings and the horse in cars marked out front, selling vegetables. What a shame, all gone now, re-developed. Thanks for this picture, especially.

The Monticello Hotel would have made a beautiful apartment building right in the middle of downtown. But the City Father blew it up. What did they care about history. And Norfolk's history is glorious. And mostly gone.
Would like to see side by side of the old picture with a current one from the same vantage point. And a few buildings are still there. Just surrounded by bigger and newer buildings.

Used to be so nice. Like so many once beautiful cities in our country, it’s trashed.

It's amazing how beautiful these buildings were in the early 1900s.
