Harry Nilsson-"Joy" (1971) (5/7)

  • Reposted from an earlier post that included the 2 clips from the animated movie "The Point!", which included "Think About Your Troubles" and "Are You Sleeping." I reposted it to avoid having this video blocked in Germany. The movie "The Point!" can be viewed here on TH-cam and downloaded in its entirety from the "For the Love of Harry" Blogspot website. This acoustic version is delivered with much more emotion and is much more believable than the country music spoof that wound up on the "Son of Schmilsson" album.

This guy can do just about anything he wants with that powerful voice he has. What a treat to watch him do his thing... He does it all so effortlessly. What a true talent...

What a great version of this song -- totally changes the emotional nature of the lyrics. Apparently Harry didn't like to tour or do live concerts, so I found it interesting to see the addition of the fore and aft video clips which gave the illusion of a live performance. The world missed out on a lot more joy from this artist because he left us too soon.

He made it all his own, but you can hear the influence the Beatles had on him. In the documentary, they make it clear that Harry thought the Beatles hung the moon. On the other hand, once Beatles heard Nilsson's music, they were all calling him on the phone telling him how incredible they thought he was. In so very many ways, what goes around comes around. Nilsson was tapped into the magical zone and he knew it and brought it into the physical universe. Thank God for the magnetic tape! Nilsson was an absolutely wonderful artist.

I've seen the documentary and watched this hundreds of times but rarely do I read the comments . I did just so happen to read this comment and dude , you're exactly right man , it's as though the Beatles and Harry competed with each other to see who could praise the other the most . They were both extremely talented , I think though , my own personal opinion , that Harry was the most talented , because of such a wide variety of music and such that he did . Of course , thats my own personal preference myself open for debate not argument . Too old to argue . Lol .

I had the great good fortune of hearing Harry three or four years before "Aerial Ballet" hit the big time; I have always loved his unique and heartbreaking songs, including the humor and despair so clear in them

I to would like to meet up with Harry in the afterlife. But he maybe being someone he was before, or touring, or giving harp playing lessons, will he even know or care that he was loved by millions of us while on earth......see, there's so much we don't know, and they won't bloody tell us. Whatever the answer, we loved him and his music...maybe that's enough. So Harry, if you're out there, we loved ya.

Harry always had a way with words and melodies

  • @grb1184

The Floyd Cramer style piano, pedal steel and great play on words isn't lost on this nor the more defined "recorded" version. It's just very funny and great. If that can be your musical smoothie then blend away. The late Nicky Hopkins was finest at doing that piano work.

There are epic stories of John Lennon and Harry Nilsson partying together, getting thrown out of bars. This was while Lennon was producing Nilsson's album Pussycats
...check the wikipedia entry for Pussy Cats.

this is the only good version ... the others are jaded & cynical. this one has the innocence of early Harry, and humor too.
