      Probably because that's exactly what togashi wants to convey throughout the whole story. I mean, Gon's goal is to find Ging, which feels much less important than what gon had gone through throughout his journey. And the man himself Ging said that phrase. which emphasize that finding ging is not actually the end prize of his journey, but the things he experienced along the way as Ging intended it to be.
      Just a beautiful writing from togashi bro.

    What a beautiful finale. The final quote pretty much sums up the entire series in such a brilliant way.
    I don't know if you two recognized the scene with Gon and Kite's group watching the birds fly, but this is a follow up on the promise Spin made to Gon to show him her "treasure" after everything is over, it's the place Kite saved with his money.
    As for Gotoh, this is just a way of making it so Killua and Alluka don't find out that he died for their sake, but yeah he is actually dead.
    The "larger world" reveal is such a fitting way to end one act of the story and the show on. HxH was never really the type of work that had a clearly defined endgame besides finding Ging which was vague enough as it is, so it's perfect that there is always one more adventure to be had.
    About Gon and Pitou, I think you guys are forgetting one important factor. It was a battle to the death between two resolved people. If Gon didn't kill Pitou he would have been killed. I don't think Gon will ever look back at him killing Pitou and wonder if that was the "right" thing to do because being a Hunter is not about doing what's right, it's about survival for the fittest and achieving your goals, he perceives it as the fair price Pitou had to pay for killing Kite and trying to kill him. Gon has a sense of morality but you mustn't forget that he also grew up surrounded by wildlife and understands the law of the jungle, and his conflict with Pitou is something that would fall under that.

    • @Shallabais100

    I think people make it out like Ging was like the father of Gyro. That’s going too far.
    Pariston saw how really felt about the situation when Gon was injured. Ging actually entrusted Gon to his friends. Why? Because that was ultimately one of the main objectives he wanted to see Gon achieve.
    To build a support system of loyal friends around him. He seemingly passed with flying colours seeing the amount of people that were there supporting him.
    We see that Ging was obviously an amazing triple star hunter, but throughout Gon’s journey one of the main things we learn about Ging is how he touched people deeply along his journey and the loyal friends he met along the way. Like Kite, Razor, Dwun, List, etc.
    I think Ging wanted Gon to be powerful physically of course but I think one of the other major goals was for Gon to go out and build those real life relationships like Ging had done. Ging had lived on the same island like Gon did. Like Gon, he probably had very few friends his age growing up. Ging on some level knew that Gon had to go out in the world to build those loyal friendships and he also knew that Gon would love to meet him.
    Gon meeting Ging was the backdrop of this crazy journey of detours and difficulties but a journey that would ultimately hopefully enrich Gon in a way that it had for Ging too.
    Ging stated that his favourite part of the whole ordeal was meeting Leorio. Why? It was based on his potential but also seemingly how much he cared about Gon. When he found out Leorio was his friend he said “I appreciate that and I hope you continue to be his friend”. Some people saw it as sarcastic but it’s later shown to be sincere.
    In the final episode, what was Ging’s final message? That despite the goal Gon had (finding Ging) the people that he met along the journey are ultimately what was most important.
    This shows that Ging is kinda holding himself to account (much like he did on the tape). He wasn’t a present father. The friendships Gon found on his journey (especially his friendships with Killua, Leorio and Kurapika) are what ultimately were more important than finding him.
    Anyways, how Ging sees Gon is a bit more nuanced than “he didn’t care”. But it’s also fair to say that Ging’s lack of parenting really did damage Gon’s psyche so he is blameworthy in that aspect. No, Gon didn’t deserve to have a series of trials to meet Ging. Yes every child deserves to have a present parent without having to prove themselves to them. I think Ging is quite aware he wasn’t a great father.
    I mean, the end of the anime in 148 shows enough of Ging for me to see that he's a great hunter. Being into archeology, restoring ancient ruins, etc. but the message he had for Gon was actually a humble and beautiful lesson that was the opposite of egotistical. It showed that while Ging encouraged Gon this journey, his actual hope for Gon didn't centre around Ging himself. It centered around Gon leaving the island like Ging did at his age and actually...enriching himself. Getting new experiences, getting more powerful, and most importantly gaining valuable friendships and learning how to be a good friend. Ging knew better than anyone what the environment of Whale Island was like. It's a safe comfortable place to live...but the world is large and there's so many great people to meet and places to explore and that's ultimately what Ging wanted for Gon. The journey towards Ging was backdrop for what was really the most important as Ging says.

    • @GabrielRodrigues-zn9zl
      @GabrielRodrigues-zn9zl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Great text! I agree with almost everything. My only desagreement is that I don't think Ging set those trials for Gon to prove himself worthy of meeting him. That's what Gon and others think. Ging always knew he was a bad dad, so the journey was for Gon to find friends and build connections, not for him to meet Ging. Ging made it difficult not for Gon to prove himself worthy, but because he was ashamed and didn't want to see his son, because he knew he was a bad dad. He was a coward, and he knew it. But that doesn't make him a bad person, necessarily. His treatment of Gon wasn't born of a lack of caring or malice towards the kid, but out of shame for himself.

    • @armstrongQB1
      @armstrongQB1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@GabrielRodrigues-zn9zl I agree with that sort of. What I meant was, those obstacles were really to get Gon more experiences. I think Ging just did everything with great intuition. He wouldn't have set these obstacles if he felt his son wouldn't choose to hit them head on. This doesn't work for every child but it worked to an extent with Gon. I don't believe he set these obstacles cause he was too ashamed to meet Gon. On some level, yes like the Greed Island trick where he sent Gon to Kite if he chose to bring a friend with him clearly indicates he put some obstacles just do to shyness. But overall it was purely to get Gon out of the island and on a great adventure like Ging experienced at his age.

      Unfortunately, I think the image of men, fathers and males in general is very damaged in modern times, especially when portrayed by modern women. This is not an incel attack against L&M, it's just how I see it, this emotional barrier exists, some cultural ideas certainly prevent the bridge between some viewers and Ging's character. The interesting thing is that it is so well done that even those who hate him accept that he is a great person and taught Gon a great lesson in this anime ending.

      @@ArtesMatt for some women (actually the majority), the cardinal sin is a “deadbeat” father. You’ll find this amongst the HxH fanbase. The most ardent Ging haters are usually women, and in the case of male fans, even if they dislike him they’ll still be able to appreciate what he’s done in the anime and think he’s cool or intriguing. For LM, they seemingly don’t even like seeing Ging on screen and find him “boring” or “completely uninteresting”. For them, Ging is just a deadbeat and thats all he is. Despite the fact they made some attempt at acknowledging his accomplishments (which I find quite strange lol).

    What I like about Hisoka is two things:
    1.- he's a true wild card. He really does have no allegiance to anyone, so whenever he appears, you never know what could happen.
    He could be a foe (hunter exam/chairman election) or a friend (yorknew/greed island) and both make complete sense for his character
    2.- In Spite of he only caring about his personal satisfaction and random wims, he's very patient.
    Like, the whole thing with Gon aside, since before the show began, he wanted to fight Chrollo. Spent a whole arc, trying to get into a fight with him and after that, he spent the whole rest of the series trying to get Chrollo back into fighting condition

      He's also the engine that move some stories.. he helped as Gon motivation at the first arc, he gave clues to Kurapika abaut the Phantom on that arc too, he prevented the kids to go too far on the heavens arena, making em learn about nen and survive the last floors (keep been a motivation for Gon), he helped Kurapika to achive his goal agains the spiders calling him to tell him that corpses of the Phantom's members were just dolls, he helped on Greed island to defeat the final boss as well as making the kids know that Phantom members were there, helped Killua scape while Illumy was chasing him on the last arc. In almost every arc, he did important things. Sometimes it's very subtle but he did change everything every time he shows up.

      There seems to be a requirement they have or misunderstanding that characters need to have a backstory to explain their motives. They're kinda dead-set on the idea that a character can't be compelling or interesting without some sort of explanation for their behavior. They essentially had similar criticisms for GIng and Hisoka. Some of the most beloved characters in pop culture don't have clear backstories. The Joker being one of the most notable examples

    Fun fact, the ending montage was actually a manga chapter. Yeah, the whole thing XD
    And now, a section of "what happened to them next!" (With minimal spoilers)
    Killua: We've not seen or heard of Killua since the ending, so we can assume he's doing ok with his sister
    Gon: Gon went back to Mito (as he said he would) but in spite of his miraculous recovery, he's still unable to use nen. Ging says that he's lucky that that's as bad as it got, all things considered.
    He supposes that Gon lost something back in that moment (not nen, but more of a piece of himself) and suggests that he needs think about it and figure out what he wants to do now
    (Also Ging gave Gon his phone number and now he can call him whenever, freaking surreal, I know)
    Ging: Soon after the ending, the king of kakin (kinda, sorta china) announced a massive, gargantuan and internationally illegal, mass excursion and colonisation of the dark continent.
    Ging and Pariston resign as members of the zodiac to join the excursion.
    Leorio: He was contacted by the Zodiacs and asked to join them, filling Ging's place and helping them regulate the dark continent expedition (this will count for his collage education)
    Kurapika: Finally answering his phone, he's contacted by Leorio who invites him to also join the zodiacs and the expedition to the dark continent. He finally accepts cause prince Tserriednich (one of the many princes of kakin) is the one holding the last eyes of his tribe

    Rarely comment here, but I just wanted to say it's been a pleasure to join you girls on this Hunter X Hunter journey. It almost feels as if the story was made especially for people like you to enjoy so dearly
    One of my favorite things I always like to see when someone jumps into something as grand as Hunter X Hunter is just how unsuspecting and even rightfully intimidated at first they are only to end up having their lives changed from it with how much they ended up loving it. It happens every time, and I guess in a way that relates to what Ging said at the end. I prefer monster to haikyu as well, though i will say for all its good episodic storytelling and long term plot, its actually one of the most predictable stories in the grand scheme ive seen lol. Me and friend group were watching it together and all jokingly guessing how it would end in the first few episodes... and everyones' most basic first guesses were exactly right, its pretty straight forward and basic message all in all despite being a grounded and well told story. Grimer ftw though! Haikyus prolly more light hearted fun for them... Im not sure they would learn anything new thematically from Monster, though it has a decent message its not particularly unique or new, just a more grounded setting and telling than typical anime.

    This is just my interpretation, but I think the show already dealt with Gon's actions during the C. Ant arc, I don't think it's a coincidence that the author put that long monologue with the Koala talking about the soul and the eternal cycle right before Gon enters the room.
    I think that scene means that Gon already paid the price for what he did - by sacrificing his own life - but he was given another chance by Killua and Alluka's wish, with the difference that this time Gon won't make the same mistakes he made in his "1st life" this is seen in his apologies to both Kite and Killua.
    As I said, this is just my interpretation and I'm probably wrong.

    • @TheYardGnome
      @TheYardGnome 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I don't think it's as much about him "paying the price" for what he did to Pitou as it is him learning and understanding what specific actions he did are questionable and why, but throughout the whole story, cause even most people who are strongly on the "Gon is a monster" side don't really think that ending Pitou itself is the issue, it's more about his self-destructive curiosity, inconsistent morality, extreme selfishness and so on, most of which isn't inherently something that makes him a monster, but it did get progressively worse through the story and is setting him in the path of someone who could become that monster if he doesn't keep himself in check.
      The thing is most of that is also something that's reasonable for him to do, as a child with as much raw talent and power in a world as dark as the HxH world, cause developing selflessness and a consistent morality is something you get as you mature as a person, same with keeping your curiosity in check to not put yourself and especially others in mortal danger (unless you're Ging whose big flaw is that he is that curious and selfish). But in the case of Gon he definitely needs guidance for that, otherwise there's nothing really stopping him from staying in that dangerous path that could very well end in him being someone _too_ similar to Ging at best and Hisoka at worst.

      @DisProfundis 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      100% agree. People just want more insight into his mind about those specific events surrounding Pitou/Komugi. We barely got it but that doesn't mean Gon did not have his learning moment (Apology and redemption) or didn't pay the price for his actions (losing nen) culminating at his metaphorical enlightenment on top of the world tree following his rebirth. Gon has already faced his karma and got the realization. All that matters is a bit of insight. At least we got his take on his goal of finding Ging which beautifully ties with him losing nen (not feeling how strong Ging is) and Ging's final message (what matters in life). Hopefully we get more, but by and large Gon's character has already developed following the events of CA.

  • @trebor2485
    @trebor2485 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    Congrats on finishing the greatest work of fiction ever made!(My opinion)
    A few important things to note:
    - This entire episode for the most part is Canon to manga including the ending scenes. Togashi in an interview said he considers this "the first ending of Hunter x Hunter". However, he still wanted to continue the story because there was so much more for him to tell. So the anime picked a perfect time to end the show.
    -As angrashadow2958 already commented Gotoh did indeed die, the magical beast from the beginning of the story are just there to hide it from killua. Many people, including me, were confused when they first saw that scene. And In the ending sequence all of the birds that are seen are the Small-billed Swans, Spin(from Kites group) talks about them and said she would like to show Gon the beauty of them.
    -There are many great video essays on youtube including those discussing Gons morality, although I believe you both already have a pretty decent grasp on his complexities. Something I would've added into your discussion about him is Gon anger and resolve didn't just limit himself to Chimeras/Pitou, Gon even threatened to kill Komugi an innocent girl. Whether you believed he would follow through or not Pitou certainly believed him and Gon showed no signs of guilt or hesitation in that moment.
    -I won't spoil anything from the manga exept that the post-anime chapters are amazing and I'd think you'd both love the story. The anime ends on chapter 339, we are currently on chapter 400 with chapters up to 420 confirmed to be worked on now. A new season won't release until at very least the current arc is finished and I personally don't see that happening for a long time; this new arc is long and Togashi can only manage a limited workload with his health, but he's writing now that's all that matters!
    -Fantastic reactions and discussions!
    I hope for your next poll you'll consider adding Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation as an option. If it doesn't win that's fine I'll just enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where I'll find the things more important than what I want

      Kurapika nearly scared me the first time we saw him again in the manga, but I like that as soon as he spends a bit of time away from the mafia and his usual business, he goes back to be a caring person. He says he'll do whatever it takes to reach his goal, and he surely doesn't want to make new friends... And yet, he finds new allies wherever he goes, people that take a liking to him, that trust him, or that start to admire him. I don't think he considers them as friends just yet, but he doesn't treat them as pawns, either. (It's still a little sus that he paid allies and friends to come to such a dangerous expedition for the sake of his goal. But other than that, he's been pretty loyal so far. He always keeps his word, for example.)
      What concerns me is how little regard he's having for his own life. People need him for a job, and he'll immediately use the Scarlet Eyes to do it, with no second thought. And considering the new condition that was revealed for Emperor Time, this is a super serious issue. Kurapika is really throwing his own life away, and it hurts that no one is even aware of it, so no one can help.

    Please do yourselves the favor of reading the manga! The story continues!!!! Either make a HxH Manga-Club video series, or just for your own enjoyment, off-camera! Its great.
    Thanks again for these 148 videos.

    u guys are the best. saying goodbye to these characters is so sad. I feel like i wanted that last bit of closure of seeing reuniting scenes. But it's still so emotional because of the journey. but i cried too. I love hunter x hunter.

    Im glad you girls finished hunter x hunter. I still remember watching the last episode 10 years ago. Crazy how time flies. I was trippin when ging introduced the dark continent. It was mind blowing. Cant wait for togashi to continue his work❤.

    How empty you feel when the episode ends, it is eloquent to see Lola and Milena completely broken. You realize how many things happened in such a long time. It is too nostalgic to watch this masterpiece called Hunter x Hunter. :( T-T

    How sad that the best shonen in history is coming to an end. Luckily the manga continues and was taken up by Togashi, Kurapika and Melody in Journey to the Dark Continent is epic.

  • @Sureño-k7w
    @Sureño-k7w 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Kurapika is such a mythical and legendary character, that with just a few appearances on the scene he generates thousands of feelings. It's too epic, few achieve that. How sad to see him in the flashbacks with Gon and Leorio... then in that ending.
