Welcome aboard! Get ready! It's time to get moving. Today, we are in the cockpit of an EA-18G Growler aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) somewhere in the Pacific Ocean near Guam in 2017. This will be a MAX power Case I launch off catapult 3 on a day training sortie.
The aircraft carrier always points into the wind during flight operations. Often times, this means that the ship is driving towards inclement weather. This was the case here.
Around time 6:00, the rain starts and the winds pickup.
Around time 7:00 the winds intensify and I can no longer see beyond the bow. The deck crew doesn't miss a beat and keeps it coming! Luckily this was an isolated storm that we passed thorough quickly.
Just another day on the boat. Fly Navy!

Excellent. I have acute Tinnitus which makes some YT videos difficult to understand, especially those with Muzak mixed with the narration. I could hear everything you said thank you.
Definite improvement. Regards ambient noise: I believe all relevant ambient sound is a major component of interest provided that audio is well below voice when vocals are keyed.
Jet noise is always welcome.
As a flight deck worker from the 1970s and having watched many TH-cam carrier videos over the past few years this is the most informative

Love the way you talk us through this! I retired from the Navy after 26 years. I spent 4 years on board USS Forrestal CV59. That was her classification when I went in 1979…loved carrier duty! I retired as a chief boatswains mate. Thank you for your service!

my counsins were aboard the Forrestal. One serviced in the mid 60's and his little brother serviced aboard the Forrestal 1980 to 1988.

Always impressed by the deck crew and how they work together with the ship and pilot to make a safe launch and landing. Those guys are busy.
I was fortunate to go on this mighty carrier when it came in for its overhaul in Norfolk. We manufactured the 100K water systems and the hydraulic coolers for the carriers and the rest of the naval ships and submarines. Thank you for your service.

My uncle Jack piloted the F4 phantom in Vietnam, I was 9 in 1969 when he was on leave for the holidays, I was in awe and wanted to ask him questions, but he didn't really talk about it, it's a treat to see the operations of your carrier, you guys protecting our great nation is comforting, thank God to you and all who serve.🇺🇸

Excellent video, as always. Thanks for making the video as a single shot without interval edits. While it makes the video longer, WE DON'T CARE. We're interested in seeing ALL of what's going on. You do a very nice job of filling 'dead time' with lots of good information. The nice thing about voice over is you can minimize exterior noise (don't ever cut it out completely) and adjust voice so it can be easily understood. Voice over also allows for calm (unpanicked) presentation. And don't EVER add music UNLESS (maybe) you're making a nice relaxing scenery video such as through clouds during a beautiful sunset or over mountains or the Grand Canyon, etc. You're videos are setting a new 'high mark' for everyone else. (You'll NEVER be able to make enough of them to satisfy we aviation nuts!)

They’ve got that “aww shucks, it ain’t nothin’ “ attitude.
My father was a CB Chief stationed at Kingsville ( In charge of the Hobby Shop). I saw the Blue Angles perform there in I am guessing 1959. I was a MM on the USS Sample DE 1048 and we operated on Yankee Station with the Oriskany plane guarding, upon his passing I was transferred by helo to the Oriskany then catapulted off on a COG to Da Nang, remember that like it was yesterday and I was told it was half power, C130 to Clark AFB, MAC flight to West coast, a AF Generals DC 3 to San Antonio, commercial to New Orleans. The Navy got me home. Great video and brought back a lot of memories of Kingsville and Yankee Station. Thank you for being out there doing what you do, it is amazing.

I loved the C2 Greyhound. We were doing exercises down in GITMO, and we had to come back to the ship after 10 days training. Our group loaded into a C2 and we landed aboard the carrier. Was a unique experience seeing the long wake of the ship, and it was just a tiny sliver, then all of a sudden, you're yanked to a stop. Most of us had the same thought when we first saw the carrier so far out from us: "Are we going to really land, on THAT"? lol

What struck me was how FREAKING LONG, it takes the flight deck crew to set up, check and recheck the "Cat"
I totally admire the dedication and skills but jeezuz your flight was sitting in the chock for almost 10 minutes

I love these videos. The flight deck crews are amazing, and remind me of an old advertising campaign here in Australia for the RAN in the early 1980s. “You’ll be wet, you’ll be homesick and frightened but the pride of the fleet will be you!”(search that up on TH-cam) We even had a CATOBAR carrier back then too, until 1982… a whopping 20,000 tons full load displacement with one cat and A-4s and S-2s which barely fitted… 😂
I joined up anyway later in the 80s…

So great to see these "GROWLER" videos! A friend, CDR Pete Fey (EWO) was involved with the Growler training program at NAS Fallon when it was the replacement for the EA-6B (VAQ-135 Black Ravens) he had flown from NAS Whidbey. As a Helo Aviator (U.S. ARMY), I had flown onto the deck of The Enterprise, a Destroyer and a guided missile frigate when stationed in Danang. Just can't imagine the unleashed power of a catapult launch during heavy seas while conducting combat ops?

When I was a kid my gpaw was friends/neighbor with the captain of the USS Kitty Hawk. He took a liking to me and took me out on a dependents cruise. He introduced me to F14 pilots, sat in their fighters, got to watch jets launch, what an experience. Got me excited to pursue being a pilot. Then high school hit and I found chicks, dope and rock n roll. The rest is history.
Sorry those mis-steps in life changed. I was aboard the USS Kitty Hawk for 4 years of my life. 1964 to 1968 as a Damage-Controlman 2nd class. take care.

I love the very detailed explanations, which are great for someone like me who knows nothing about aviation, but loves to watch these magnificent jets, and admires the pilots who fly them. I can't even comprehend the amount of intelligence, knowledge, courage and ability required to fly these airplanes, as well as the people who assist on the ground.

Damn. I love your nice calming voice. I just started dating a Naval aviator (E-2 Hawkeye) and I have so much respect for her. But she has some PTSD after an incident, so as much as I want to learn more from her, I leave it to her what she was wants to talk about. It is a demanding job and I have so much respect for you guys.

Hi PAIL, first, thank you for what you do. Also, thank you for these amazing videos. My dad was on a Mitchell B-25 crew in North Africa during WW II (Army AIr Corps). After the war, he worked at Jax NAS as a civil engineer, so I grew up around aviation. I have always been interested in what exactly goes on during a Cat launch, and your videos are right on point. Due to an injury at age 3, I could not join the military. But through your amazing videos I can experience what goes on during a launch and a recovery. Thanks again, keep them comming!

I know how much work it is to record, edit and post videos - so thanks for doing it. As one of many who watch, I dreamed of your job as a child and even as an adult. I have a sincere respect for how much is put on your shoulders as a pilot, the expectation to perform, compete, etc. Enjoy the commentary insight as you conduct your carrier ops.
Overall your videos are a little long in the groove, but overall - OK.

Fueling up in a banked turn, manouvering on Mom's (🙂) deck or waiting for a cat launch, and I understand only a little of the pilot stuff you say, but I appreciate all of it (I noticed your mention of NW US berry fruit production - hope the growers did too). I like your approach - "I'm just a jock with a job to do, these are the things I do and this is how I do them. But don't forget! I'm Navy. And I'm a pilot."

I was on the Forrestal in 73, and we did the Med cruise. I worked the catapult & and arrested gear (the guys in the green ). I always wondered what was happening with the pilots when they pulled up to the cats. This brought back some fond memories, thanks.
Oh wow, I would know that helmet insignia anywhere, that's CAG 17. I served in the Navy from 90-98 and did 3 deployments on the USS Saratoga. CAG17 I was in VS-30 Anti Sub squadron and was an AO, Avaition Ordnance. VA!-132 was our Growlers in the EA6B, one of the loudest aircraft I ever had to endure. Seeing that Rainbow Eagle brought back memories. It's crazy to see how not much stuff has changed with fight deck operations, yet LOTS has changed. Most of the aircraft on my boat are gone. F-14s, A-6, S-3s and our E2C's had only 4 props. Thanks for the super cool video, great memories. IYAOYAS

Lots of fun to watch your videos. My successor as Civil Air Patrol squadron commander is a retired F-14 RIO and TOPGUN graduate. He has some great stories about his carrier days. The Cessna 172 we fly these days is pretty tame compared to a Tomcat, but flying is flying. Give me wings and an engine or two, and I’m a happy camper.

Great video. I was on the USS Independence for 4 years working part of that time in Air Ops typing up relaunch briefs to the ready rooms and writing backwards on status boards. Great to see what you were doing up on my roof.
As a commercial pilot (777) this is fascinating. Procedurally the pace etc is similar but the proximity of other aircraft and operation is so different! Amazing videos
