My 150 scooter the fuel gauge refuses to work. How can I check the sensor. (In the tank). I tried a led bars go ( 3:08 vertically) it worked at first chink garbage?
Excellent video. And technically well-explained how this circuit works. My situation is the actual wirewound variable resistor or rheostat. Making this resistor is more difficult than it is. The length of the Ni-Chrome resistance wire is 100-Ohms. And must be wirewound on a non-conductoive piece of phenolic. I would imagine that the Ni-Chrome wire is insulated where only the tap contacting the wire is the only exposed wiring. The rest of the wiring must be insulated or sprayed with some coating impervious to gas and non-shorting. Since it is resistance of 12V across, the rheostat gets hot. It won't ignite since its not the right ratio of vapors for an explosion. Most of these old Japanese bikes that have these fuel sending units are discontinued. You would have to make your own or repair your old sending unit. I'm thinking of using a 100-Ohm, 1/4 Watt rheostat with a 90-degree half-sweep deflection. I'm not sure if such a discrete device exists, but I'm experimenting with electronic components for possibilities to get my motorcycle up and running soon. Piyush, thanks again for the great video.
The temperature problem what you have explained is absolutely a serious problem as the coil is receding inside the gas tank and it's extremely dangerous, how ever I guess you can use another nichrome wire of more watt (more resistance) which in result will not get heated, however rather attempting blindly on this part you can do the calculation of the resistance along with the wire length keeping temperature temperature coefficient. with the calculation you will get the precise value of the resistance and the wire length.
A very good descriptive video.i thoroughly understood the working. I think you could have connected probs on back of connector terminals instead of cutting it....
Can we change the position of rheostat as I have installed a 4 wheeler fuel gauge manual one it shows readings in opposite direction ,when the fuel is reduced actually it shows increase in fuel

It sounds like you're dealing with the issue which could have several reasons: 1. Faulty Ignition Coil 2. Spark Plug Issue 3. Electrical System 4. Fuel System 5. Starter Motor You have to check which part is having the problem.

yes there are various options available in market. technical name - Nichrome Wire (same wire is being used in Electric Heater). In old Fan Speed regulator(big size regulator) is also having the wire inside it. If the gauge enters the red boundary - it means your bike can go to reserve mode at any point of time, this is the time when rider need to move the petcock knob manually to reserve position else your motorbike will stop moving. After setting the petcock position to reserve mode, your motorbike will start consuming reserve gas from the gas tank and keep on moving until the gas tank is completely empty. At this point of time the gauge will be pointing all the way down the red end. Note: The quantity of reserve gas in the gas tank may vary depending on the motorbike brands. As per my knowledge, 2-3 liters is the minimum reserve quantity of gas in the gas tank for most motorbike brands.

Offcource, you can use potentiometer. What you are seeing in the video is ultimately a potentiometer, just you need to make the mechanical arrangement in such a way so that you could use it as fuel level indicator.
Generally for this type of fuel level measurement sensors are having only to wires to get the fuel level data. In case you are see 3 wires, the third wire possibly for reading the temperature or may be for fuel level error auto calibration. It may also depends upon type of sensors.

What's you exact requirement. you can directly short circuit the resistive coil from one end to other - it will bypass the fuel level and indicate as full tank fuel all the time.
Sir why can't auto companies dont show the amount of literes of fuel is present in car or how much is pumped through the filling , it can be done with simple level transmitter and can be shown on the screen since now everyday digitization is happening
the thing you are looking for is very simple feature but it would be very useful if implemented, however most of the companies keep it for future launch for which they will charge tremendously. BTW if you will check few custom top end cars I guess its having the fuel measurement feature. we people could only imagine these thing and it completely depends on the companies when they want to implement this feature. 😑

It sounds like you're dealing with the issue which could have several reasons:

When does my motorbike stop moving, when the gauge reading point is on red or all the way down where the red end??
