When engine just won't stop: inside car's fuse box - it's not as simple as you'd thought!

  • I know that I should just replace it with a proper one, but if you have 16 year old car, there are some decisions you have to make considering it's market value (about $1000) and price of the used fuse box ($50) + cover ($20). You just never know when the engine, transmission, gearbox or anything not worth replacing will fail and you just have to scrap the whole car. I fixed quite a lot of issues on this car like this and they never came back.
Car: Fiat Stilo 1.4 from 2004
EDIT: I had another issue in other video and I eventually replaced the fuse box doubting my fix, but it was completely unrelated. So this fix still stands.

Hello, nice video but I have a question. Where is the relay for servo steering wheel?

That's a good question, but looking here, there doesn't seem to be one easily accessible.

There are two fuses for power steering, one in the engine bay fuse box and one in the cabin.
I also found this www.reluctantmechanic.com/step-by-step/punto-replace-steering-motor.php and it seems that for Punto (they share a lot of the same parts) the relays are part of the power steering motor assembly and are soldered directly there.

@@pandaengineering Thanks for advice. I have Stilo 1.4 16V and in my car there are two fuses near the battery and that is it. I checked it and both are fine. Now I need to find the right relay because my servo steering wheel does not work.

New update; I realized that there is no relay for the servo steering wheel, only two fuses.

I have exactly the same problem!!! I can’t start the car. Do you know maybe which relay fuse or cable goes to the starter? I wanna try to start the engine manually

I'm not sure if that's a good idea if ECU doesnt want to start it. Try checking the connections first, because it may not deliver any fuel mix so it woudn't have a chance to start. If you're sure about trying to crank the engine manually I think you will have to supply +12V on 3rd connection of the starter. If I'm not mistaken it's directly connected to ignition switch. I never got so far as to get to the starter.

@@pandaengineering thx for your reply. finaly i started the car, but just for the moment, it stops by itself after a few minutes. it was exactly like on your case, i had water on the electronicpanel next to the engine. i disassembled it and clean with isopropyl alcohol... will see if tommorow wants to start again.

During nonstop 500km drive (~300 miles) in heavy rain in mine it melted in few places so it's best take some extra time to dry it off. Good luck! :)

Tough luck, eventually after cleaning the fuse box my battery ground connection on engine stopped working. I thought that I didn't clean the fuse box right but issue was solved after I connected additional minus to engine block (next video). Bridged minus with engine using jumper cables to get home.
