Probably back to Jazz Fusion. I mean, without it, Math Rock, heck, probably the whole Progressive music movement/umbrella-genre wouldn't have existed. It's so mellow, as is! Add it with some contemporary pop and contemporary R&B vocals, and voila. Heck, Cynic did it, Opeth did it, Dillinger did it, etc. (revisiting Jazz Fusion seriously)
Guys like them represent the trend of double hand tapping stuff in a more chordal way and that hybrid picking stuff. Yet we also got guys like yas nomura and oka satoshi who got a great command of whammy bar technique. And ABASI users like Josh dela,Joseph Anidjar,Giuseppe Gilardi with their unbelievable left hand legato technique. Jazz talents like Pasquale Grass,Josh Meader who literally play the guitar like a piano player in their voicing.
One thing is settled.More and more modern guitarists tend to use hybrid picking and legato rather than alternative picking both in their playing and arrangement. So they could play more complex harmonic stuff like the pianists.
yeah idk where else this goes. Im convinced eventually get adopted by hiphop or pop. hopefully true talent starts mattering because that's what these guys have. For me the evolution started with Bleed by Meshuggah in 2008. That song and album just resonated so hard on the internet for a few years. I have loads of friends who aren't metalheads but love that song and album.
