People wear masks every day. Most people will never publicly present with 100% authenticity for a single day in their lives because frankly most people just don’t like to be that vulnerable. I disliked The Idol overall, just like everyone else -- because it was too male gaze-y and needlessly pornographic -- and there was already controversy with it's production as I recall reading about the show's original director and how the show was supposed to go in a more feminist direction. I do recall people praising Depp's acting for Episode 2, when she had her mental breakdown -- because that was the one episode where we felt the most relatable to her character. If anything, people kept watching the show BECAUSE of Depp, but not the story. The rest of the show focused on her love interest, and that was just not interesting.

I was sooooo excited for The Idol when it was being promoted. The show came out when I was on vacation in Germany and HBO Max wasn't available there. But I didn't wanna wait until I was back home so I looked into paying for a subscription to some EU streamer just because I couldn't wait the 1 week until I was back home. I ended up just downloading the first 2 episodes that had been released during my layover in NYC so I could watch them on the 6 hour flight to LA. I got through the first episode and hated it so much that I decided to just stare at the back of the plane seat in front of me then continue on to Episode 2 😂

People genuinely don't want her to like The Idol and it sickens them that she actually enjoyed working on it. I personally love and miss The Idol and while I don't love every single thing about it and some aspects made me uncomfortable, I still have a strong emotional bond with it and wish that we got a season 2 to explain that cool twist ending and delve deeper into the mind of Jocelyn. It was a joke amoungst all my film friends that my taste is questionable because i think the godfather is silly and indulgent, i fell asleep in inception but I loved the idol. I thought it was so entertaining and i thought the weekend was brave for playing such an unlikeable character
Shocked about the amount of braindead people commenting below who disliked The Idol with a passion, simply because they and their friends were indoctrinated by the press and reviews criticizing the film and its production "issues".
The last two episodes of The Idol are easily the best and the show actually criticizes a lot of you! ;)
The show was completely vapid, contrived, and performative. It was all sensationalism/ shock value with 0 substance. There was no actual meaning. If your only defense is but the music industry IS foul- then why was this not told in an actual meaningful INTELLIGENT way? Come on man. That show was utterly shite.

She was the only good thing in the show. Too bad it sucked because it really had so much potential but Sam Levinson and the Weeknd ruined it.
