Aww yay thanks for sharing and trying my routine! I think it turned out nicely but maybe too much foam gave the product feeling! I only use 3 pumps for my entire head haha!
A couple of things I do that stop the tangles and make sectioning easier:
    - apply the curl cream to my entire head as one *before* sectioning (I also apply the foam before sectioning). Also prevents me apply too much curl cream which can weigh my hair town.
    - I section the entire top section with my head flipped forward rather than upright as I can never section it properly with my head upright 😂
    - the top section is split into two - one smaller section of the face framing pieces and the other the crown section
    - keep adding water throughout - especially to the top section. I never used to brush my gel through (especially strong hold gel) but the key is to make sure is soaking wet
Hope this helps anyone trying it out😍 Also, I got lots of these tips from @sophiemariecurly styling routine🧡

Hi Courtney. I think brush styling works best on tighter curl patterns. It seems for wavies, it almost pulls the waviness out of the hair. Your own technique serves you better!

@@Est.4_14 My hair is baby fine and flyaway and I have wanted to try the Scrunch It brush for a while because I also find brush styling makes my hair stringy no matter what I do. My hair comes out best when the clumps are very chunky. What products do you use for your hair with your brush?

    • @dani_mack
      @dani_mack 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

The whole idea of brush styling is to put tension on the hair being pulled through the brush and then gently shake it to form the curl. Think curling a ribbon on the edge of a scissors blade when wrapping a gift. Courtney is not putting enough tension on pulling the hair across the side of the brush, and then just lets the whole thing drop. I think the product and the scrunching is what gave her the curls/waves here, and she might as well not have bothered with the brush at all.

I recently followed Hannahemilees routine and it worked wonders for my hair type. I think the microplopping after styling each section is a game changer. She says the weight of the water will pull out your styled sections whilst you are styling your other sections, and I've found this to be true. She also 'sets' her microplopped styled sections with hairspray. I have also been doing this method, and it really works!

As a 2B Wavy, I do minimal brush styling. Also, I truly dislike sopping wet styling. I focus on the nape of my neck, face framing fringe and the crown (which dries wonky and exposes my "swirl" if I don't). The amount of product is always a challenge with new stylers for me, less is usually best for my fine, low density hair. I started adding in medium size claw clips to the top of my head midway through diffusing, great for volume and lift on top. Lina aka Lina's Lovely Locks uses curl keeper jaw clips, she has WAY more hair than I do. Erica aka Coils and Curls (new channel over 50) uses section clips and has a great tutorial on her method. She's type 3, low density. Raya, aka Getting Curly With Raya (Also a Newer Channel), has long, 2C medium density hair, uses a Denman mini in her routine and demonstrates some great brush styling techniques. I applaud all that take their time to give us product reviews and styling techniques. Textured hair is not a "one size" fits all. Finding an influencer you identify with is priceless. ~ Love you Courtney~😇♥

I was gifted a Tangle teezer at Xmas and decided to attempt brush styling last washday as I'd only ever used it to detangle in the shower. I wasn't super precise but I sectioned my hair and sprayed it so it was wet and applied curl cream before I brushed it. I didn't use a lot of tension but I lifted sections up and away from my head. Then I glazed over the sections with gel and let air dry. I got some of the best curls of my life. I'm a 3b but there were def some 4s coming through. My husband had never seen my hair as curly as this and loved it. Am a converted brush styling fan.

I have a bob and love Manes by Mel's top sectioning technique. You do a criss-cross pattern with the brush so you can keep it organized and not have a really defined part. I'll define my part when I'm half way through diffusing so it doesn't dry wonky.

That makes me so much more comfortable than the ones that have it all done perfectly with the perfect waves and curls end result, when trying something different. Still experimenting with different routines to find what works best for my waves. So far, not been impressed with my waves and brushing for definition though. Girl brush styling is so much effort and the tangles, the TANGLES. It’s definitely an art to keep your sections separate. I keep it simple and just do a top section (crown area) and the bottom half of my head. I used to love upside down styling but once my hair got longer (down to my waist), it just hurt my back and neck too much! Lol
I have the bounce curl brush (and the new volume one is coming 🤭) with my 2C/3A hair medium coarse hair, it works great to define, reduce frizz, and make beautiful ringlets. I’ve found that keeping a consistent “direction” of the brush while you use it around your head helps to get more even results and less stringy, flat pieces. Good results come from taking a section and facing the bristles of the brush “out” toward the room not toward your head if that makes sense.

Curlsmith stylers have never worked well for my hair, though I like some of their other products.
I apply leave-in or cream and Ecoslay Orange marmalade, then brush with the Bouncecurl brush. That flax seed gel has so much slip, I don’t have any issues with the brush gliding easily through. I use Sophiemariecurl’s brush technique for quick styling.

I would be curious for you to do that brush styling technique with only 1 product that gives knowingly good results on your hair, like the Kinky Curly Custard or Brio Geo (sp?) Gel. I do think the brush styling has potential of good results for your hair if not weighed down with so much heavy products.
I tried the Kinky Curly for the first time yesterday. My hair was so shiny and the curl!! But also, there was so much frizz!! Maybe I needed more product? I only used a little, unlike your handfuls 😂 I am in Canada and Amazon sold me the little tub for $35, so I can’t afford the handfuls 😮😂

I wish I could brush style, but as a wavy with long fine hair yet a LOT of it, I find brush styling to be much too harsh on my hair. I end up losing so much more strands than I would by using my hands or combing with a wide tooth comb. Luckily the way I style consistently works for me, but I still get curious of new methods. Also for other wavies considering the Bounce Curl brush, please keep in mind it can put a lot of tension on your hair. I would not recommend it for anyone with damaged/brittle hair as it will just add more stress on your already weak strands.

I have the same ‘problem’ as you have. Styling with gel in my hair totally doesn’t work for me. I tried different versions of using gel that way, but it never comes out good (total disaster!). Using gel after styling does!

Does the brush pull out hair like the denman brush? I recall you saying you also had that problem.

I follow Manesbymell styling routine which is similar but only using a curl cream and a gel. I don’t brush through regular gel but I use Verb Foaming Gel which you can brush through. My curls come out great and lasts for days.

Hi, Courtney, I would love to try this routine, but I cannot use Curlsmith products because they are so heavily scented. I haven’t tried their unscented products because I prefer to avoid phenoxyethanol which is in all of their products. Any dupes that you can recommend? I did upside down styling for years when my hair was shorter and that method worked well. My hair is waist length now, and I find that technique creates a lot of tangles, so I’m back to right side-up!

A good tip for curly haired girls, use a small amount of curly cream in damp hair. Then brush through foam in your hair and scrunch, doing this upside down for volume helps. Then scrunch in curly hair gel and airdry or diffuse. And instead of scrunching out the crunch, sleep with your hair in a bun in a silk bonnet, and scrunch out the crunch in the morning for beautiful curly hair! 🥰

Great tips, I have used that brush several times, and noticed a lot of hair, from the root is pulled out!! Because it is stretching and pulling hair so much. I have very thick hair and am afraid of losing it in this way… am I the only one?

You have lovely wavy hair. I’m wondering whether you are low, medium or high porosity because that really makes a difference on how much product your hair absorbs. PS - I think your normal routine is better for your hair. Could be due to too much product weighing it down.

I use the curlsmith cream on the upper 2/3 of my hair and that in shower styler on the lower ends bc it’s potent stuff. It finishes the ends nicely. I’m 2c wavy

Brush styling doesn't work for me either just like you don't seem to be enjoying it. I wish I could get Hannah's results on my 2C/3A hair! But, I feel like it's meant for 3A/3B and above. Brush sytling gives me less definition not more as a wavy. And yes, I find it hard to brush through gels. I only do it in the shower with soaking wet hair so it doesn't knot up. Wavy hair has unique challenges also to those with curly, coily, or kinky hair. What works for them doesn't usually work for us! So we keep testing :)

I feel the same about upright styling. I cant stand my wet slimy hair dripping all over me 😂 and yes that dang top section is the worst for me! To me it was sounding oike the gel was creating to much friction in your hair.

Brush styling stretches wet hair, which is not ideal. I find it causes partings all over my head even after fluffing dry hair at the roots. But, I think if done gently without too much tension on the hair it can work for some hair types and lengths.

Honestly about the brushing hair with gel in it, I get it. A brush isn’t coming near my hair unless my hair has some kind of cream or conditioner in it lol, otherwise it’s a tangly, frizzy, disaster.
