    I'd forgotten about this one. It's good to see Mike and the guys back in the garage for another engine night, Roadking, especially because they've been so busy with everything else. Thanks!!

    That engine runs real nice! Based on the fact that you at least have residual, I would say a simple regulator and you could get full power from it. It would also be possible to automate the machine with a simple micro controller if you were so inclined. I helped a buddy do one for his greenhouses near me. Emergency power for vents and heat when mains was out. At any rate, thanks for posting lol. I loved that line, "I've never seen Everett move so fast!" hahaha that was great!

    Engine sounds great! "Hey, why don't we all just hold a wire"!😂 Reminded me of when I was working on my hit n miss whitt, I asked my wife to hold the wire tight in her hand while cycling the mag... Yep, not only did I were her ice tea, I'd rather not say anything about the rest!!😂😂😂

      @regsparkes6507 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, we used to pull that stunt on newbee's who came into our shop as we were working on those older Wisconsin engines with magnetos. " Hey, hold this tight for me while I turn this to see if it 'clicks'" We'd get 'em almost every time.
      ( What a dirty trick!)

      I have a apx. 1940-50s Winpower Generator 2200watt/110volt. I think it has a Wisc. engine, rope pull start. I have it in pretty good shape and it works well. Do you know how I can test the voltage, when I put a meter on it, it says 74 volts from either side of the plugs to the ground. It's a beast and likes to have at least a 500 watt load to run smoothly. I bought it at an auction years ago and some ass had taken the engine id plate off. Any comments you could give me will be appreciated. email is: grantwhitwam@yahoo.com

  • @briank2411
    @briank2411 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mike, at least you got voltage out of that generator, so it is most likely a regulator issue. I was actually working on a 675 KW generator behind a D398 yesterday that was sitting for 35 years, there was no residual on the armature, so we had to excite it.... is definitely a bit nerve racking.

    • @dchargerfan
      @dchargerfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd be curious to know what the required RPMs are for that generator head! My first thought from my small experience on a few small gas units, and some larger diesel units, if the correct RPMs aren't achieved, will it not put out the correct voltage and hertz?

    • @Wooble57
      @Wooble57 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      rpm is related to hz, but not voltage. You can get pretty much any voltage from any speed quite easily.

    • @dchargerfan
      @dchargerfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah ok. Looks like I need to read up some more.

    • @Wooble57
      @Wooble57 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the way these work (and most any type of generator used these days) is they have 2 windings (or more, but it's easier to explain with 2). One winding is the field winding, this acts like the magnet in a simple dc motor, but you can adjust it however you like, you can get more or less power output at any given rpm by giving the field winding more or less power.
      the second winding, the armature ( i think). It is the one hooked to the output of the genset.
      frequency of the resulting AC power is dependent on speed though, to get 60hz (60 cycles a second) you need the engine to spin at 3600 rpm (60 revolutions per second) if your in europe and want 50hz you run it at 3000rpm. You could use a gearbox to get around this rpm limitation, but you still have to run at a fixed speed regardless of load. I don't know of any examples of this, or even if it's done.
      The new smhick way to do it is with electronics, they turn the AC into DC, then back into AC at any frequency you want (well, it's not adjustable usually on consumer units), this let's the motor run at lower speeds during low loads, saving fuel and making it significantly quieter.

    • @dchargerfan
      @dchargerfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      animefreak5757 ahh!!! Thank you! Makes sense now. Is that also why some generators have the 120-240 switch? Change the required voltage from the regulator? Also, is there a high current through the field windings or more just an exciter? The last part is the inverter generators right?

    Men I was once a very young and dumb kid i know right. So one day at work I seen a electrician wiring up and testing a flare unit, and he was an old fart to. I seen he has his left hand in his pocket and I had seen this going on a lot with other electricians. I asked why and he said it keeps the arc from crossing your heart as it passes through your body to ground. Ether it goes through your right arm to ground and if it goes through your left arm it wont go through your chest or across your heart. Mostly i think because your left hand is not near a ground source to complete a circuit.

    Maybe you'll luck out like my buddies dad- bought and installed a nice big genny and a year later the road got redone and they put his power underground. He aint had an outage in 15 years and never run the genny. Its a small price to pay for underground if you ask me!

  • @Phantomthecat
    @Phantomthecat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have residual voltage which shows most of the genset is ok - I'd try flashing the field with a 6 volt lantern battery to see if you get the voltage to rise - if it does, it's probably just an AVR. Field windings should be marked + and ++. + is the positive, ++ is negative. Field resistance should be around 20 ohms.
