Pachter is definitely underestimating how many single-player GTA fans there are. I'm one of them. Truly zero interest in GTA Online. That's not why I go to GTA. If they force me to pay extra for the game in exchange for online currency I don't want and make me do missions in a multiplayer mode I don't want to play just to unlock content in the mode I do want to play, yeah, that'd be annoying. Pachter himself loves GTA but doesn't play Online, right?

Terrible idea to make it mandatory, make it choice. Movies don’t come out only on IMAX is a choice for the consumers.
Damn I remember Michael Pachter from the Gametrailer days! It's been years, just came across this channel.
The more forward the industry goes, the more i go backwards. The fact that GPUs cost more than the whole PC used to doesnt help either. This will likely be the year, i go full retro and fill in the holes in my gaming library.
There are just too many cheap and free games out there for me to pay $100 for a game. $100 games will make gamers much more accepting of developers using ai to develop games, driving down the cost of making games.
Depends what they're doing for GTA Online. If they make it free to play they're betting on higher spending for shark cards and cosmetics.
I don’t understand why publishers would hope for anything from GTA. It’s not like customers will “well I paid more for GTA so I willing to pay more for slobfest 5 as well”

In all honesty, I don't buy games right away because they'll eventually get discounted on Amazon. I got Metaphor and the Silent Hill 2 remake for $50 each a couple months after they were released, so if I know that Rockstar will drop the price of GTA after a month of release, I'll wait... unless some friends pressure me to buy it so we can all play GTA online at the same time.

Forget charging $30 to play the game a month early, games like Diablo 4 and Starfield have been charging $30 to play a few days early. It’s the scumbaggiest approach so of course Activision blizzard when kotick was still in charge and Bethesda/Microsoft were at the vanguard introducing it
Gta online will require xbox live. single player shouldn't.
Please no locking single player content behind multiplayer missions.
I'd honestly pre order the game immediately if they told me I could buy it a little cheaper for *just* the single player campaign.
Since it will fail so spectacularly it will probably lower the prices going forward. Like what are you talking about.
Better idea. Sell it for $70. First month is only GTA online w/ GTA 6 content.
Get people hooked and spending money on GTA online. Release the story mode after.
Kind of like how EA should release FIFA (FC) for cheap/free to get people hooked on the real cash cow of the game Ultimate Team.
I only understand a higher price tag for how long it’s been in development and as we all believe rockstar will deliver a truly next next generation experience but with that in mind I would also not be surprised if the performance is lackluster on consoles locked in at 30 fps and that would suck to pay $100 for a game that people will probably have to rebuy on the next generation of consoles. The game won’t even release on pcs launch day but probably 6 months later. Also there are a lot of (above average income) gamers in their mid 20s to mid 30s that don’t want to play gta online or those other trash features like ultimate team. And for them (or yourself) to justify a $100 price tag for fake $30-40 of in game currency is an insult to long time fans and large subset of gamers. If EA and others try to pull this with UT and half baked games people will vote with their wallets and speak out and they will be the next Ubisoft
I finished GTA5 in 2013 and never played GTA online =)
Perhaps if the game isn’t monetized post launch there’s some kind of coherent argument for this in light of inflation increase cost for production, however that’s not the world we live in whether you’re talking about cosmetics battle passes additional season content which used to just be DLC there’s countless ways that companies extract more than the upfront cost of the product.
No gamer ever asked for a marketing budget increase of what company spent now, and the yield for the additional marketing if done correctly should be taken care of itself in additional profitability for extra awareness of the product.
There’s no world other than a dystopian world where this makes any sense for the end user, I don’t wanna be forced to have to have Xbox live or PlayStation equivalent of a monthly fee, tacked on in order to play a single player game.
I understand the logic that you’re presenting, but it’s dystopian … and it’s not consumer friendly whatsoever.
Gta 6 will be 119 usd pre-release
My interest in GTA6 is low so I could wait for a price drop or PS6 Remaster. Don't care for GTA online. $100 would be a no go for me.
