I'll be adding this to my planer soon. I 100% agree that we should switch to the metric system. A lot of the calculations we do in engineering class is based on the SI system and then sometimes you will have to convert back to US customary units. It gets tricky when one unit is given in SI and the rest are in US or vice versa.
Doing 'everything more simply' is how you decline long term though. Great ease with base 2 is an incredible advantage, while 'more base 10' gets you very little.
Awesome review, they didn’t have the one you used in stock so just bought the heavy duty version. Actually installed easier, less hardware needed and larger display. As a plus the power cord is detachable! I removed the measuring stick and installed this in its place. I feel like it’s a much cleaner install.

This is sick! I remember when you showed us the one on the Oliver, but I never thought about mounting one onto my own. Definitely checking this one out
Wixey is what I use. I highly recommend it! I still batch everything though, like if I’m doing chairs, then all the legs go through, then other parts etc. Get it on first go around. Sometimes you need to come back because you dropped a utility knife in to your finished face of walnut and out a gash….not that I’ve ever seen that but people are clumsy. Not me though, nope.
This looks super handy. The only thing I'm not a big fan of is the fact it sits above the front right post. I have a plywood platform on top of my posts for sliding the wood back from outfeed to infeed side. Not a deal breaker but something to consider i spose
Hi very nice presentation. I have a 13 inch dewalt thickness planer. Let’s say I have three pieces of 2X4 and each one them is 2-7/16 , 2-3/8, and 2-5/16 how do I make all three of them being 2-5/16 without manually measuring them. I appreciate your input. Thanks
I've been using the Wixey version on my 735 for a couple of years. Great addition for not a lot of money. After watching and for those comparing, the Wixey "self-calibrates" without having to measure and runs on AAA battery. Not digging that dangly cord. Also, I didn't see an incremental mode (temporary zero) if you want to measure the delta of two measurements.
Good video. I have the Wixey version on my Dewalt 735. It seems easier to calibrate, but a digital readout is great on the planer! I liked it so much that I added a Wixey to my 12" Grizzly Jointer / Planer combo unit!

i looked into the iguage and wixey and wound up getting the wixey as I just can't figure out why the USB cord on that thing isn't removable? I would never use a battery pack sitting next to the planer, and the wixey uses 2AAA Batteries which are far more common in my house than the CR2032 the iguage uses, and from what i could discern from the video and online instructions the wixey is a tad faster at calibrating. Though either way having a digital readout on the planer is a game changer.
Hi, I have the same gauge on my Dewalt 733 planer works a treat. Also that zero button is not to recalibrate, but rather take relative measurements. Is you have planned a surface, maybe just hit the high points, and won’t to take another 1mm pass, you can zero it, move it down 1mm. I like this when I flattening boards on a sled, just lets me know how much I’m taking off with each pass.
Snag a digital caliper from Amaz for $9.00. It’s the very best way to measure the stick. I had the Wexliey thing that was useless ,I snagged my hand on the top part and finally removed and trashed all of it
You asked, so here goes. Actually the US had several intentions over the years of going metric. Thomas Jefferson was a big proponent of going metric. He ordered a set of standards (calibrated objects which the US would use to base what a true meter, kg, etc actually is) from Europe but the ship sank on the way over here. The Imperial system was based on a time before decimals were widely used by most craftsmen. When a measurement gets divided in half, well that's pretty easy with 0.5. However divide it by 3 and it goes to 0.3333333333. The units in the Imperial system units were divisible by 2, 3, and 4. As time progressed, the French came up with a new system that would be more universal and easier to convert between units within itself. Although many countries adopted the Metric system, the US and Great Britain (who taught us the Imperial system) held fast to their beloved measuring system. Great Britain grudgingly began to ditch its Imperial system in the 1970s because it was the only way to gain access to the markets of continental Europe. The US on the other hand at this time was more independent both in trade and in geographical location. We as a country are by and large an island and really only have two neighboring countries as opposed to European and Asian countries which have many neighboring countries with which they need to travel and do trade with. Our economical and geographic isolation has enabled us to hold on to our "antiquated" unit of measurements. In order to convert over to the metric system, it needs to become part of everyday life. However the cost of replacing signage and machinery are likely the biggest barrier from converting over.
Great info but, for those that can’t afford the DeWalt planers but have other planers such as Ryobi , etc. Do you know any other companies that makes digital readers for planers such as Ryobi and any planers that wasn’t mentioned. Thanks 🙏🏾
The metric system is better in almost everyway. But for woodworking standard is actually more accurate because when you have to be precise to say 1/32 of an inch. There are only 25.4 mm in an inch. So technically you can be more precise when referencing measuring/marking tools in woodworking with imperial because there are more marks to reference. However, as far as automotive tools goes metric is the way to go. When i was a diesel mechanic on heavy equipment it always made it simpler when you got a machine that used metric bolt sizes.
Ooooo.... Definitely going to see about getting one of these! Does it work on other planers or is it just for the DW735? Also, I'd kill for a DRO for my table saw fence. Aaaaaaand iGaging makes one! Please do a review of the iGaging 35-EF52! Looks like Penn Tool Co and Grizzly both sell it, but Amazon doesn't for some reason.
If you adjust the height while it is off or in sleep mode what happens? Does it wake it self up? Does it know and adjust correctly? Do you have to recalibrate?
Thanks Matt, I'm looking to add one to my planer. That one does have a nice display on it, but as a question, how does it compare to the Wixey (which is similarly priced)?
Great video as always! Also awesome shirt! When do you think you'll have more designs available on the website? I love representing Christ rather than the surf/skate companies I used to wear.
All the links are to planers which I already own. Where is the link to this device? How hard is it for that to be easy to do in your description. For that and other reasons I say no!
I’m 64 and live in Canada. I’m still in imperial for most things. I still think feet and inches are easier but my son (18 yrs old) had more idea what 3 feet was when I asked him to grab me a piece of metal. A meter ok! Grab me a piece a meter long. I feel like an old dog.
I just bought this and was excited to use it. However, it was defective and did not work. When I turn it on I get a blank green screen. Poor quality control. The company website does not have a link or page for support. I will be returning this and buying a different brand.
DROs are not only worth the money, they pay for themselves extremely quickly. In addition, a planer (especially a bench top) should be used to get a rough thickness. For example, I plane to .90 for kitchen rails and stiles, then finish at .875 after joinery on a wide belt (or drum sander if that’s what you have, or even with a hand plane). These gauges are relatively cheap, and very accurate allowing for easy repeatability that is far more accurate than the stops, and with far more variability of thicknesses. Then having multiple machines with DROs can drastically speed up your milling process while improving the quality of your work. Household DIY projects likely don’t benefit from a DRO, but I’d assume, if you’re watching these channels, you’re trying to learn some semblance of quality wood craft. If that’s the case, you could certainly benefit from this gauge.
In the 1970's Jimmy Carter said we were going metric. We didn't. Why? He said we were too stubborn. Nope, we were just too stupid! (He is Risen Indeed!)
I remember in either 2nd or 3rd grade we spent the whole year learning metric. No big deal, since most of us didn’t really know imperial very well anyway. Went home that summer, came back in the fall & not another whisper about metric, like our lesson plans from the year before had disappeared into an X-file somewhere.
We are not stupid. Metric is stupid, numbers-only based - good for science, bad for design & natural measurements that go well in natural design. Imperial is based on the rule of thirds, the golden ratio & makes more sense in design because of it. Your index finger is EXACTLY 1 inch long at the tip. All index fingertips, regardless of the size of the rest of your hand, are EXACTLY one inch long. Because God does not make mistakes. HE IS RISEN, INDEED.
As an American i can do metric if i need to. It's easy, but guess what? I can do imperial too. Easy for me. Not so much for metric weenies. America never needed metric because we standardized measurements early in our history. Euro weenies had different standards in every village and burg. They should have just adopted freedom units that were already standardized.
DROs are cool, but I highly doubt your bench top planer itself has the precision to stay within .001 of an inch. There is definitely more play in the mechanism than that.
This is just like that measuring wheel you stick on your miter saw fence. Its a good concept, but probably not so good in actual practice. A good carpenter will know their planer and be able to get repeatable results no problem
So, a tool that most people will most likely run on battery has a permanently attached USB cab that is directly in the path of the adjustment wheel. That’s a major fail.
@@731Woodworks 👍 What’s weird is that it appears to only be that way on the version specifically for the DW735 and it’s $10 more expensive than the generic version which is more complex given that it has a remote display. Still useful but if I get one, I would opt for the generic version unless I’m missing something that this one has other than a DW735 specific mount. My planer isn’t scheduled to arrive until Tuesday so I will have to spend some quality time with it … at least until my wife stops realizing that a lot of boxes are bypassing our gift stash and heading out to the garage becauseI can say it’s my birthday present so many times prior to it on the 24th🤪

DROs are cool, but I highly doubt your bench top planer itself has the precision to stay within .001 of an inch. There is definitely more play in the mechanism than that.
Every place that sells it has not so good reviews.
If you read the reviews, it’s all has to do with - bad instructions, difficult to setup, etc.
Also stated the unit was unable to retain measurements due to vibration of planner
I was wondering if the vibration might affect it...makes sense
This is just like that measuring wheel you stick on your miter saw fence. Its a good concept, but probably not so good in actual practice.
A good carpenter will know their planer and be able to get repeatable results no problem
So, a tool that most people will most likely run on battery has a permanently attached USB cab that is directly in the path of the adjustment wheel. That’s a major fail.
I just snipped it off with a set of pliers. Problem solved lol
My planer isn’t scheduled to arrive until Tuesday so I will have to spend some quality time with it
… at least until my wife stops realizing that a lot of boxes are bypassing our gift stash and heading out to the garage becauseI can say it’s my birthday present so many times prior to it on the 24th🤪
I actually got this just so I wouldn't have to use imperial with my planer hehe
Put one on my Dewalt years ago, used it once. Removed the battery. I know my planner and with my calipers I get dead on results. Waste of money.
It's freakin' out of stock for the Dewalt 735!!! ARGH!
We definitely need to go metric.
looks like something you could make out of a 10 dollar digital caliper
Love to see you standing up for Jesus!!

Sorry for unsubscribing.... Your channel has changed from being fun to being a shopping/advertising channel.... When are you gonna make something again?
As someone who is completely new to tools and woodworking his channel has been a god send because knowing what is worth spending money on first has been so helpful
Go metric? I don't think so, buddy! Why use millimeters when I can measure in sixteenths of a freedom.
An alleged American carpenter asking for Metric? Why?!
No metric.
No metric, ever!
