    Just to add, into the 3xx to 6xx series, on the motherboard you should be able to find and read : "Made in the USA with our components and factories."
    You can be proud of this my friend, because it's one of the best laptop series of all time. There were even some in space stations, it's not for nothing.

    Anything in this line is wonderful for DOS. Collection of 3 380ED's with docking station here and the CPU clock feels just right for the era of Dos and Win95 I want to play..that MMX sub 200mhz pentium era. Crystal audio works great in native DOS with every single game I tried. Had to use SLOMO to get games like monkey island and 8088 type games to work but they all do. You can also boot from a CF card using the PCMCIA slot so you can swap out OS's and configs right out of the box, add games in a snap. I love these little machines.

      I'm sure if I can correct the CD/DVD drive issue in DOS I'd be perfectly happy with it. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of laptop form factor drives here so I wasn't able to swap parts and tinker around as much as I usually do.

      @@AncientElectronics There is a hotkey for the thinkpad that lets you stretch the image to fullscreen. I used it for my 380ED collection and forgot it. It works well enough to make it a Dos only machine. Also booting from a CF card is your best bet to get software on it. There are also utilities to load ISOs even in DOS. It's tinkering but that's what we do ha ha.

    Love the hopefully intentionally humorous singing intro. That said, it is better singing than I can manage.

      Lol, I think I paid a guy $25 on Fiver to create it. it's supposed to be a sort of parody or in the style of an 80's or 90's sitcom intro, at least thats the original idea.

    A little Deja Vu, but actually very cool that you review a classic laptop on your channel, considering that i commented on old laptops on your last video about making a DOS PC without expansion cards.

    I bought a Thinkpad from someone in the mid-2000s. It could play sampled audio, but it was disappointing that it couldn't play FM sound straight-up (it could play emulated FM for SEGA Genesis games).

    there might be a scaling option in the bios

  • @patrickbateman3490
    @patrickbateman3490 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really one of the things I like the most with these Thinkpad models is the smell of non-Green compliant plastic (because immortal hardware), which comes out of the fan for a brief moment when you turn on the laptop :)
    It's a bit like my "madelaine de Proust" :)

    I've actually never owned a laptop with NeoMagic graphics, they were mobile only and included DRAM on the graphics chip. They were a bit of a footnote really, and never were updated for 3D. I think that the chip you have is one of the last produced.

    • @AncientElectronics
      @AncientElectronics  ปีที่แล้ว

      after looking it up online it looks like there were three chips made after this one but it seems to be one of the last ones.

    I think the screen scaling is Fn+F8? This may require Windows and the proper IBM software to be installed.
    Screen scaling/expansion never looked good, nor had decent scaling performance, on old machines so it's not a great option. An external CRT, or newer monitor with integer scaling, looks and performs far better (laptop or desktop). Yeah, the graphics are best suited for general DOS or things like early RTS games under Windows. These compact machines/laptops are often used by people with external thin monitors - LCD/OLED screens, keyboards, and mice are easier to make room for in the average home. Multiple computer towers or desktop cases, not as easy.
    A DOS era, late Win98SE, late WinXP, and a newer PC covers generally most games anyone would want to play, and storing 3-4 laptops on a shelf makes for a compact retro gaming collection. Thinkpad 300 series with neomagic/crystal, a T42 15-inch with Radeon, and a T430/T530/W530 with NVS/Quadro are great options to cover DOS, Win9x, and XP gaming. The T42 can use a $50USD dock and PCI addon soundcard for good Win98 DOS-gaming sound, largely eliminating the need for a dedicated DOS laptop. Throw in a decent LED-backlit screen like a Dell U2412m and most people will be very happy with a compact, reliable setup.
    Just my findings for compact retro gaming options!

    A little irrelevant, but do you have a 3do blaster card? You know the one that turns your pc into a 3do. Also why is the white Chihuahua always so angry?

    • @AncientElectronics
      @AncientElectronics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not, wouldn't mind having one though. As for the chihuahua, yea, he's angry a lot but thats just a thing with some chihuahuas. He was a rescue dog though so I don't know what he was through when he was younger. He's gotten more mellow with old age.

      I honestly don't think anyone cares. Also, I don't like sharing personal information from individuals, companies, or otherwise even if it's outdated. better safe than sorry anyways, so just being extra cautious. I don't know what that sound was, light switch? my bones? who knows.
