My dream guitar as well. Finally broke down and purchased one directly from Gibson in April 2024. It was set up perfectly out of the box. I thought my 75 Deluxe played like butter, the Custom plays even nicer. I love looking at it and keep it in my family room when I’m not playing it. I pray that it doesn’t yellow in my lifetime (I’m 64), the first grand kid who learns how to play rock guitar will inherit it. In the meantime it’s my pride and joy.

I don't think the discoloration process is something you need to worry about for a while...like the next 20 years or more. Nitro is an organic material so every guitar will age differently, but unless you're playing the hell out of it for 5 hours a day, in a smoke-filled room with blazing UV light saturation it'll stay white for a long time. My guess is if you own it long enough for it to turn yellow there's no way you're ever selling it anyway!

Like Randy Rhoads said, all those wear marks, scratches, scuffs come from you, it’s your life’s work making it special. The natural aging you will eventually love as you own the guitar longer. Guitars are meant to be played. I bought a Alpine White new in 1985 ( because of Randy Rhoads). Loved it!!
    Thanks for the video!!!

I do agree with this. Like I said in the video, it still kills me whenever I mark it, but I bought it to play it and I have no regrets.

I have 90s Gibson Les Paul standard and 2023 Gibson Les Paul custom. They both share the same pickups (i.e. electronics). The custom noticably has better clarity that you clearly hear every single note. The tone is much fuller and creamier with the custom. If you have the money I wouldn't bother with the standard and would go straight for the custom because then you'll never look back.

I personally couldn’t be more excited at how my 2010 custom has aged into a natural, creamy color. To me, it shows the guitar has been played and is a result of my hard work. I think used these white customs are actually more desirable if the finish has aged as well. When I bought mine in 2017, it was still basically white and gold, like the previous owner never took it out of the case. I personally never put mine on a stand because I hate seeing stand marks on these beauties and so far, the finish has aged pretty uniformly. I swapped the 498t/498r pickups but they sound great with your rig.

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The aged look is definitely something that’s sought after. I do agree to a point, but with the white, I just love the clean look of it.
I know keeping it perfect is an unrealistic expectation that I have, I just wasn’t prepped before hand. Again, my own fault for not researching. 🙄
I love the idea of customising your guitar. Makes it even more custom!
End of the day though, I bloody love this guitar! ❤️

They look great off-white and slightly cream. To get them yellowed you would need to smoke ciggies around them constantly and gig in dive bars for 20 years.

I would advise to anyone with the alpine White finish to leave it in the case when not using it!
If you do want to hang it off a stand you can cover the stand with a white micro fibre cloth to stop the nitro burn ✌️
(In extreme cases it can cause the White finish to turn red were it's been hung so be careful)

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is what happened to me. Luckily I noticed it pretty quickly and only got a small yellow spot.
The Hercules brand stand that I use now has a specific foam that is designed to work well with the nitrocellulose finish, and since using it there has been no added damage.
The other thing to keep it from ageing is to give it a wipe after using it and remove the skin oils.
It’s gonna be a mission to maintain it. I’ll be doing a 10 year review for sure. Haha

i could afford a custom but my boss Katana 2 100w head showed me no need to spend $4000

Cool channel! Cool Guitar! I think a major part of the yellowing of nitro is due to UV exposure. It should stay pretty white as long as you don't leave it in the sun or smoke 30 cigs a day with it. I've got an R9 myself and i agree they play very well (probably the plek).

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to use it for those summer gigs on the beach or not! :D Congrats on enjoying it. I had a black beauty in 1980 and I loved that guitar. I recently got my first LP Custom wine Red. Bought it from a fellow on Reverb who strummed it a couple times back when he bought it in 2000, and then stored it. It's an absolute cream puff time capsule in almost perfect condition. I'm in the same conundrum. Do I play it and contribute to its first wear in years or store it? I can't help playing it, so I guess I have to accept the wear!

I considered the Epiphone briefly, but it’s just not the same. While I do think the Epiphone quality has improved, they’re still only copies of what Gibson do.
With this comparison, the finish is different, the hardware is different, the pickups are different… Tone and feel is obviously going to be different.
I do beat the shit out of my gold hardware unintentionally, it’s happening to another of guitars so it’s definitely me!

They make the customs on the line just like all the other models, just more binding and inlays and maybe a little more detail to the finished guitar. Also this is my dream guitar. Beautiful guitar, but for that much $$$ the gold finish should last longer IMHO.

I have read mixed reviews about the gold. Apparently the sweat is a real thing!
I have a black ESP with gold and it is also fading, so I blame me.
Ah the clean tone. Isn’t it nice!!
I reckon you could get close on the HeadRush with a bit of tweaking, but I was playing through my GT1000 Core for this.
First I have a little Compression using BOSS CP-1X which goes into the GT1000 input.
Amp is either the ‘Natural’ or ‘Boutique’, then EQ & a Marshall IR. So super clean!
But what makes it great is the externals FX that are in the loop in stereo.
I have a BOSS Dimension C, the Eventide Blackhole, & possibly either a tape or analogue delay on the DD200. I don’t remember.
This tone and riff is from one of my originals on my upcoming E.P. I’m really proud of this tone!

      @jimwoodard64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DaveWebbMusic Yeah, the gold would wear even if you left it in the case. It's just something that you either hate or love. It's a thin gold plate. As for the yellowing, they yellow more slowly (except that stand rash you got), so it will be whiter longer. Nitro never truly hardens or sets, so it's something that Poly won't tend to do and that's discolor with age. Newer nitro discolors more slowly though. I've got a special edition 2015 Gold Top Standard (it's actually golden pearl), and I'm only now really aging the gold. But I have a very light touch and I wipe my hands dry constantly throughout a gig. I also keep my guitar wiped dry with a lint-free cloth so I'm savoring the gold and finish as long as possible. :D

  • @Synathidy

Gibson guitars don't come with strap locks. As long as your strap isn't cheap, I've found they don't need strap locks, either. Biggest turn off for me about GIbson customs, other than the price that I can never see as justified, is that so many come with ebony fretboards. I swear by rosewood fretboards. Rosewood has never failed me... I believe rosewood is lower maintenance long-term and is more resonant and warm, which is what I prefer. I have a 15-year old Les Paul Classic I've put hundreds if not thousands of hours on. It has a rosewood fretboard that looks and feels amazing and all I ever have done to it is wipe it down with a dry cloth.
"Pre-aged" guitars... I don't get that. Seems for posers: people who want to POSE as if they have had that guitar for years and played it, when in fact, all it shows is that they had more money than they knew what to do with... It's fake. I think it's very strange to want to fake age, wear and tear rather than let that be a natural sign of genuine experience. Quite strange. Like those people who buy pre-destructed jeans. I scoff at such superficial creation of age.

Just so u know - just because it's called the Les Paul 'Custom' doesn't mean it was built by the Custom shop. As a matter of fact the LP Custom is just another base model built in the main process line like the Standard and Studio... just so that you now know.
I don't know if you're aware that the Custom is in fact thinner sounding than the Standard as it's not capped with a piece of maple over the mahogany body so I think the Standard would've been more suited to your pedal-depended style of playing.
Also, why on earth did you buy a Les Paul to shredd with ?? It's a bloody waste to stick pissy .009 strings on it when Les Paul's really shine with chunkier strings such as .010 - .056
You should've just stuck with those crappy shredders' guitars (ie ESP) and leave Gibsons to people that know how to appreciate REAL guitars...lol

      Ok…. 🤦🏻‍♂️
      1. It’s called a Les Paul Custom because it was built in the Gibson Custom Shop. It may be a stock model, but it’s build location earns it its name.
      2. I have 2 Les Paul Standards that both have AAA flamed maple tops. My Custom has a 2 piece maple top. They all sound great and suit my style while helping to shape the sound that I am achieving.
      3. Pedals are awesome.
      4. Les Pauls are a pleasure to shred on! The Gibson humbuckers allow for more expression, and combined with the Gibson ‘tone wood recipe’ it’s a robust sound and feel that can’t be beaten.
      5. The 9-42 gauge strings suit the way I play. As a matter of fact they introduce a slightly more prominent mid-range which allows for the tone to cut through the mix with a little more ease.
      6. ESPs are great.
      7. “Leave Gibsons to people that know how to appreciate REAL guitars..”?? Please.

You are both correct and wrong sorry. It is not a Custom Shop guitar. It is a factory line model. However it does have a maple top.
The actual Custom Shop Les Paul Customs are based on the ‘54 and ‘57 Customs. Both have all mahogany bodies, no maple tops.
I know this because I own a LPB7 from the Custom Shop.
The serial numbers are also quite different to yours. The actual Custom Shop guitars have serials that start with the model year ie: 2,4,6,7,8,9,0 then the year of manufacture then build date. For example 7 0127 denoting a ‘57 model made in 2000 or 2020 and the 127th made that year.
I hope this information helps dispel the confusion around factory line guitars such as your white custom.

Also, it is not called the Les Paul custom because it was built in the custom shop. The Les Paul custom was born in 1954 there was no custom shop then.
Unfortunately, Gibson has been very misleading with some of the markings they have been putting on the back of Les Paul custom headstocks of late.

S you couldn’t be more wrong. About everything. Straight from Gibson’s website:
As the flagship model from Gibson Custom Shop, the Les Paul Custom lives up to the high standards set by its 1950s archetype while evolving to a level of tone and performance more suited to today's musical demands. Beneath the layers of its "tuxedo" appointments lies the crisp, edgy voice of a matched 490/498 humbucker set, a solid Ebony fingerboard, a long neck tenon for maximum sustain and a two-piece maple top over a solid mahogany body which adds the perfect amount of sonic bite to everything from jazz to hard rock. It sounds as good as it looks, and it looks as good as it sounds!

Great video, lots of insightful intel on these axes, but we all know your names Dave Webb, so please stop the screensaver repeating it over and over as it comes off narcissistic and all about you and your channel is about guitars and not you, right?

For me that money would rather go into an 80' white les paul, with proper old school humbuckers. Gibson are charging way too much for these average products, but they are right, people buy....
