    It's fascinating to me how the early migrants kept going and kept going, all the way from the top to the bottom of the hemisphere. The psychology of it.

    Thats what annoys me about history. Most people think these unique and diverse cultures were nothing before European colonization. Not only in Mesoamerica, but even in Africa too. They were there long before the smelly, white dudes! Give those ancient people more credit!

    Some lucid comments here. History in the Americas has plenty of beginnings, endings and gaps. One of my favorites is the literal disappearance of the Maya; they had an unbelieveably complex society and lost their culture/literacy in an amzingly short period. They came out of the jungle driven by a need for water, developed advanced irrigation systems for their farming and then went back into the jungle with barely a sound....

    its much older... the incas built Machu Pichu on the top of older and highly technological constructions...
    and in south of Brazil we also have those civiizations... with big pyramids and stuff... unfortunately my theory is that the portuguese tried to destroy everything and hide every track of ancients here... Thats why we have underground tunnels and other weird stuff here like giant water channels and Stone observatories with giant rocks to watch equinox and solstices... big artificial mounds everywhere I look here... its crazy because there is no evidence of what people was here before the natives... só we call them Sambaquis...

    • @edsonnunes8909
      @edsonnunes8909 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually, I'm brazilian and I never heard about any ancient hidden civilization in the south, this is not mentioned in our history, (I heard about pyramids being discovered there though) and the portuguese weren't interested in the south of the country, but it was a place who gathered a lot of europeans from many different countries, like Germany and Italy, and until these days you can see their legacy in the south's culture

    • @edsonnunes8909
      @edsonnunes8909 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sweet Life First of all, you don't even know our history, second: those suppose "pyramids" are just a pile of sand, it could mean nothing, third: our history is taught by many people, just like the US

    • @duicwb
      @duicwb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Edson Nunes Sorry Edson, but you are very misinformed..
      Portuguese had imense interest in south of Brazil, mainly in Paraná where they looked for gold in Nhundiaquara River... They funded cities like Paranaguá, Antonina and Morretes. They were all over the place in the 1600 mainly, together with the jesuits... and only after the discovery of gold in Minas Gerais that they moved their operation...
      Fact is, they were following indigenous tracks looking for gold... I've even read a history about one of those early explorers being received with chuncks of gold by the indians... problably Aleixo Garcia, I don't remember now...
      Those indians tracks are actually the "Caminho do Peabirú", pathways of rocks connecting the atlantic sea to the Andes... the pathway is still alive and well, and its used for hiking here in Paraná... its also called "Caminho do Itupava". Nobody knows who build it, but we all know the mainstream explanation... It was all done by the colonizers...
      When you say just "piles of sand", actually you are reffering to ancient graves, huge mounds made of sea shells ... where archeologists found bones dating to 8.000 years BC (the older Sambaqui ever discovered). Artifacts called "Zoolitos" were also found... It can't be natural formations since we can found mounds of sea shells that are located far away from the Ocean...
      And I'm very confused now... you say you know our history but you don't even know the Sambaqui culture, that we already have museums and stuff dedicated to them, and its a well spread history here in the south...

    • @nickmoore6381
      @nickmoore6381 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Because mainstream history is likely missing information about the beginning of civilization 12,000 years ago, and there could have been civilizations before that which were wiped out by a worldwide fractured comet impact that destroyed nearly everything and forced humanity to reboot. All roughly around the same time. We have a lot of evidence for the disaster, which humans were definitely around for, and it could also explain the origins of the global flood stories and the idea of hell. Because there was a global flood and the world got set on fire. So that'd leave an impact on human memories. I'm really simplifying but you can look into this if you'd like. We have several anomalies in that part of history that could be explained by an ancient advanced (maybe Roman Empire level or a little more) civilization at the end of the last ice age before the disaster. It could be where the story of Atlantis comes from too.

    Very good condense history video. A read a few into the Maya and Olmec and I find it very interesting their high appreciation for Jade similar to the people in China. In regards to artifacts the similarities are strongly similar. I am confuse with the dates because the Qin's Dynasty had similarities with the Olmec where they alive during the same time in history, even though they lived in different places in the planet. Also you left out the Tainos from the Dominican Republic. Thank you

So sad to have seen them get wiped out

    I heard that the wheel hadn't been invented yet in America when the europeans arrived. Is that true? I think since native Americans arrived and settled in America much later than europeans settled, it's kind of expected that they would be less technologicaly advanced.

    • @OriginLinear
      @OriginLinear 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The Maya did in fact invent the wheel. They used wheels for children's toys, never for anything beyond that however, according to what i understand.

    • @Liam8488
      @Liam8488 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've heard that too, wheels are mainly useful when you have roads, otherwise livestock like horses and mules are far more useful. The tradition of using wheels in Europe probably dates at least as far back as Roman roads several thousand years before

    • @OriginLinear
      @OriginLinear 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The Maya also built roads. There were no horses or mules in the America's though, until the Europeans showed up. I think a commonly held assumption is that the lack of decent beasts of burden is partly why they never really used wheels in any practical form, beyond toys.

    Well. I think there is an important misconseption induced by this video. Let's admit that there was a population of 50-100 million people there. The bigest chunk of this population was concentrated in three regions: Mezo-America, Inca Empire and in a lesser extent near Mississippi river. In the rest there were tribes, tribal confederation, and small sedentary setlments. And we speack about two continents, guys. So the most of Americas were indeed very sparcely populated with hunters, gatherers and small agricultural comunities. I mean, you have enormous regions as Amazonia, Pampas, Patagonia, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, all of the Canada, North of South America which were poorely populated (and even today they are less densly populated but may be for slightely different reasons). So when English explorers came to Atlantic coast of the US they didn's see big cities and people with writing systems, highways and Tesla cars. They saw hunters, gatherers and small agricultural communities. They saw less advanced technologies, not so much use of metals (mostly coper, or a bit of iron in the Pacific North-West) Something similar found Spaniards when they discovered California, French in Hudson Bay, or Portuguese in Amazonia.

      Those peoples actually had large structures (like pyramids) that are only recently being discovered, South America was a hot bed of civilization but due to the thick vegetation it makes archaeology into those civilizations difficult, plus there's the possibility of colonial intervention (cover up if you will) many superstitious Europeans who would destroy records of these civilizations for a multitude of reasons.

      Many ancient civilizations had practices that we would find abhorrent today like slavery, human sacrifice and explicitly trying to eliminate neighboring groups (genocide). For example, the ancient Romans used to set early Christians on fire and make captured people duel to the death as entertainment. They would also enslave people by the millions.
