  • How do we stand out? How do we create a connection with the audience before our work has even began to play?
Aardman Animations figured this out by having a unified aesthetic across their work. But it goes deeper than just how the characters design. I attempted to dig that little bit deep in this video!

To be fair, the only reason Flushed Away is CG is because halfway into a typical clay built production, the studio burnt down. They decided to start over from scratch with CG since they had lost all of their footage and assets.

I never did think about where did Wallace and Gromit came from as a child. Aardman animation does have that distinct style, but I always thought it was the work of an auteur that was working for a big company. I hope that Aardman strengthens their brand and get the recognition they deserve. Thank you for this video!

The fact that I have friends who enjoy those awful CGI/live action remakes, baffle me. Especially sense they grew up on the originals. The announcements from earlier a month or so ago, snoozefest. Over ten Star Wars shows and movies! Weren't they just saying they needed to pull back on the franchise and regroup. I LOVED the first Wreck It Ralph. I couldn't finish the second movie. Ditto for Frozen 2. I couldn't finish Soul. I just didn't care. Which surprised the hell out of me. I love Pete Docter films! I saw Up in the theaters ten times! I recently saw the trailer for Disney's upcoming animated movie. It feels bland. I saw things in the trailer that reminded me of other Disney films. I wonder if losing John Lasseter hurt their movies. It'll be interesting to see the quality of the film John is working on.

It pains me to think that many people outside of the UK, just won't understand Wallace and Grommit, in the same way we don't get many American sitcoms. In my opinion, Wallace and Grommit is probably THE essential British franchise. It's so charming and warm, to think that you can just sit down and see a guy and his dog go from almost being murdered, to sitting down for cheese and crackers.

Claymation is such a beautiful yet simple method of animation that it makes you feel like you can create one of these movies in your home. Of course it would take ages and probably never be even near to an Aardman feature, but it's still pretty inspiring.

7:33 Yeah, I agree - CG animation is just so damn hard to master, I honestly prefer doing animation by hand.

      1) Blue Sky
      2) Dreamworks
      3) Very early Aardman, before they moved into stop-motion

Fun Fact: "Claymation" was trademarked by Will Vinton, who made the stop motion feature film "The Adventures of Mark Twain" released way back in 1985. th-cam.com/video/qRgY56Sgub8/w-d-xo.html

Hi Guilshad! Thank you very much for your comment and for watching my video :) while I appreciate your comment I can’t agree with it! They put out a lot and though some are certainly less well received, other DreamWorks animated features and tv series stand head and shoulders with the best! 3 of Aardman’s most financially and critically successful features were with DreamWorks! Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Trolls, Rise of the Guardians and others are great films, I love them and have some dang good storytelling in them! Also series like Voltron and Tales of Arcadia are DreamWorks, and both, some of the best, CG and traditionally animated tv series! I hope you understand my point of view :)
