Serviceman J is a gripping memoir by a former NZSAS commander on serving in Afghanistan over five deployments and operating at the edge of his limits In 2011, following the Taliban siege on Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel, an SAS soldier identified only as Serviceman J was awarded New Zealand's second highest military honor by showing outstanding gallantry in the face of danger. After twenty-two years in the New Zealand SAS, ex-commander Jamie Pennell is now ready to tell his story. Having survived the famously tough SAS selection course and excelled during its brutal training, Jamie was sent on five deployments to Afghanistan and played a critical role in New Zealand's operations. From patrols across desert territories run by warlords to hostile fire and near-death combat, Serviceman J is a heart-stopping account of life inside one of the world's most elite military forces. Great great interview.. loved it. Im a kiwi here in NZ & we are all proud of our NZ SAS. Thanks guys
Too right. Very proud of our boys. Oversight is always needed but those "journalists" who attempted to make a dollar out of a "story" off of the backs of these men, in war, risking lives for the greater good are simply grifter scum. Kiwi SAS have a proud history all over the world. All top tier forces are the elite but us kiwis punch above our weight, Respect to all those men.
Thanks for sharing your story Jamie, that was fascinating to have a first hand account of NZSAS at work. Great interview....
Great interview, just bought Jamie book yesterday and this pops up today. RIP Steve Askin
I remember working in Waiuru as a contractor, and the SAS guy's were back from time training out in the bush, met one of the guy's out in the Oasis hotel and asked where he just come from, told me where him and the guy's had been,
Awesome guy's, quiet, unassuming, respectful,
Next morning lining up for breakfast at the dinning rooms, the boy's showed up dressed and with their SAS Blue belt's,and all the other army recruits along with the rest of us civilian contractor's,just knew,we were standing next to some very special people, and the pride shown by the regular soldiers that morning spoke volume's
Even though there was a hush, from everyone standing and waiting in line,
Remember that time fondly, even 40 yrs later,
I had a similar experience as an electrical contractor working at one of the training camps. The guys were so young obviously early twenties but just friendly guys getting on with their training.
Thank you for your service Jamie "Scorpo" Pennell. Been along time since Waiouru. Keep traveling safe ONWARD.
To be offered to become WO in the SAS is huge
Thanks for the interview, Jamie. Very interesting. My family and I have always been close and totally respectful to the SAS boys my old man knew. I've always been so interested by these guys, in awe and wish i had given it a go myself...instead of chasing girls. I respect the need for SAS to stay hush but im so glad some of you guys open up about your stories and lives. It's almost to hold the memories of all the men who have served and/or given their lives. Well done, one of the highest achievements of human capabilities.
I would love to hear more about your story now you are back , dealing with family, your work with hps, and the boys you are working with. Respect and thankyou for your service! Important too is how you have faced the reintegration to life back home.
Fantastic watch and insight on your journey, particularly the transition and adjustments to civi life, freedom of emotions and control, self development to pursue real inner peace. Thank you bro 🙏

I recognize that the Victoria Cross is the highest honor, but the Gallantry Star is equally prestigious, and Jamie deserves much more recognition than he currently receives.
Great interview!
NZ SAS tough as nails

7 or 8 million? Dude, we only recently got to 5, and most NZers know that.
Does that include the 2-3 million of us living overseas lol
@@shaneedmonds84 more like 750,000. Anyhoo
he wasn't a Commando, Mate. He was an Operator. In NZ the Commando's aren't 'badged', and haven't gone through the entire selection and training cycle that this gent did.
I was in the nz army reserves & yes there are no commandos. He was a Sgt, or commander meaning he was in charge of a group of soldiers
Just a random point but the hardest bloke ive ever met was a Kiwi.

@@Lana-n7c4b we’re not here to entertain you.
Why does everyone in New Zealand have a mate or know someone in the SAS, while nobody in the UK knows anyone in the real SAS 22 Reg ?? NZ SAS is the same course as the British girl guides course 😂😂
Wrong, and it’s a small country with a small army, regular and reserves, carry on Walting
