    A Megger is a device that sends voltage through a circuit to test insulation. Just FYI for anyone curious.

    • @keldon_champion
      @keldon_champion ปีที่แล้ว +12

      specifically it tests circuits with relatively high voltage but low amperage somewhat like a weak taser, they sound like some fun guys to hang out with lol.

    • @paulfarace9595
      @paulfarace9595 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      They turned it into a taser or as they called it 'a cattle prod ' and used it on the polywogs during the crossing ceremony!

    • @rpbajb

      Is it called a Megger because it delivers one million volts?

    • @keldon_champion
      @keldon_champion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rpbajb no their voltage output depends on which one, the biggest I have ever heard of is 10k VDC, they are called a megger for a similar reason to your logic but a different electric measurement. The original ones used a measurement of 1 million ohms resistance to prove a circuit did not have a short to ground and if it passed that test then the circuit insulation passes the test. Most of the older ones were 500-1000 VDC which while not 10k is still no joke because DC voltage is a whole different animal than AC voltage.

    Necessity is the mother of invention 😂. My dad told us of our uncle putting the leads from a crank telephone on the seat of the family outhouse. Story goes that Grandpa sat down, Uncle winds up the generator, Gpa starts cussing and yelling that there’s hornets in the outhouse 😂😂😂

    Great stuff, as always, though I wish you'd have shown the interior of the former head space, as well as the engineer's office.
    Along those same lines, I'd love to see a longer video showing a complete tour (stem to stern) of every space on the boat.

    That electrical distribution panel is gorgeous ❤

    • @oldtugs
      @oldtugs 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not really a distribution panel, it is the battery, generator, and propulsion motor control cubicle. It is used to connect and control power from generators or batteries to motors and to connect batteries in series or parallel. Auxiliary power is distributed by panels located in other compartments. Some boats had the motor generators that produced AC in the pumproom beneath the control room and some had them in the maneuvering room where this video was filmed.

Dry dock trip was very impressive. Still in awe of our technology and mechanical manufacturing capabilities during WW2. Who knows, maybe the crew of the sub Harry Homewood (the author) did pull the same stunt on their boat...

    "Smitty" and the Megger: I worked on seismic boats and a Megger was available on but as far as I know it was never put to its best use. ps As I may incorrectly recall the Megger was used at a pinch to re-connect through welding, parted electrical conductors in the hydrophone "streamer" cable, whilst deployed.

    I am just a touch surprised the electrician mates didn't find a way to leak some hydrogen gas into the head and touch it off. That would have made the seaman the first submarine launched ballistic missile! The result would have been something like in the movie Mr. Roberts when Ensign Pulver set off his firecracker in the ship's laundry!
    I have a true civilian head story for all from the late 1960s as seen on WOOD TV-8 in Grand Rapids MI. The reporter was the late Dick Evans.
    A lady was spraying her hair with a brand new jumbo can of hair spray. The spray valve stuck open. Not knowing what else to do, she pointed the can into the toilet bowl and put the seat on it to hold it. She left the room. A bit later after the can had emptied, her husband when in to take a dump. While sitting on the stool, he lit a cigarette with a match and tossed the lit match into the toilet. BOOM! He is tossed across the room. The toilet bowl is shattered. Hubby's butt is torn up from shrapnel from the toilet and bleeding. Wife calls for the ambulance. The ambulance crew does first aid on the lacerated rear. The load him onto a litter. The crew wants to know what the heck happens. As they are carrying him to the ambulance she explains what happened. The ambulance crew starts laughing so hard they drop poor hubby out of the litter. In hitting the ground hubby breaks his arm!
    Dick Evans some how managed to tell this news story looking straight into the camera and not crack up in any way!
