    Gonna be honest, Comicron 1 actually sounds cooler and less generic than Vigilant.

    I always thought that line about her celibacy was because she knew of Kirk's reputation and wanted to establish right away that he would be getting nothing. Doesn't make it any less of a What The Hell moment, but that's just the only logical reason i could ever think of for her saying it.

      +Tyler Chambers you mean Kirk ISN'T an incurable womanizer? I mean, he's other things, too, but I'm pretty sure he's that.

    • @vegeta002
      @vegeta002 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      David Spring Not really a womanizer, just a flirt. He happily flirted, but often to get an advantage over the enemy of the day or turn them to his side.
      He wasn't as bad as the fans make out, they just took that one trait and exaggerated it to the point it overshadowed everything else.

    To anyone wondering, Star Trek Phase II was scrapped because the pitch was so limited that someone at Paramount decided to make a movie from it and leave it there. This is also why Iliea and Decker were killed off.

  • @florenceb1031
    @florenceb1031 8 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Even before I knew more about the Deltans, I never had a problem with Ilia telling Kirk that she took an oath of celibacy, mainly because she's talking to KIRK. It's probably best to let him know as quickly as possible that you're not available so that he can move on to other women.

    Ironically, I like the 2.5 hour extended cut. Of course I fast forward through the 20 minute 'flying around inside V'ger without talking scene.
    As for the glory shots of the Enterprise. Consider, when this movie was released, all we had was the original series (where they reused a handful of shots of the ship over and over) and the cartoon. This was the first time anyone was seeing this new redesigned Starship Enterprise. Viewers who started with later movies, or own Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, forget this. We all know now what she looks like, but in 1979 it was brand new.
    The first time a Star Trek series/movie shows a new ship, you want a good long look. You want to see everything. Preferably with the ability to enter the scene and get a guided tour of the ship from the Bridge to the keel. ST:TMP gave us that slow close up look. Something they couldn't do with the old model on the TV show. And she was gorgeous.
    I could go on about the plot issues, but really, it all boils down to Gene Roddenberry's novelization tells the story best, because it can take time to explain what the characters know but we don't, without clumsy exposition.

    Another thing about the movie is they NEVER give Kirk a scene where his experience pays off. His assuming command is nothing but an ego trip. I guess you could argue the bluff near the end is that, since it's really the only time his Kirkness accomplishes anything. However, are we really saying Decker couldn't come up with a shot in the dark like that?
    It's interesting where so much of Phase II was brought into TNG. Decker/Ilyia became Riker/Troi. Decker was going to be the one to lead the landing parties with Kirk staying on the ship. A young full Vulcan science officer trying to understand human emotion in order to work better with them became Data.
    However, I think you missed the resolution to Spock's crisis. It happened with the mind meld and learing that V'ger couldn't understand something as simple as friendship. In sickbay, when he takes Kirk's hand is when his plot is resolved. It's where he realizes that total logic is not the path for him and reaffirms his friendships. Previously, he'd been completely detached.

    To anyone wondering, the Spock betrayal thing also came from the cancelled TV scripts. The reason it never amounted to anything was because it was supposed to be a seasonal arc of sorts and they likely didn't want to effectively dispose of the arguably the franchise's most famous character in the first movie. Dunno why they kept it in the movie though.

    I'm actually considering doing a video comparing your review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (well, the comic adaptation, anyway) against SF Debris' review and Doug's Nostalgia Critic review, as well as the other odd-numbered Trek films. I'll compare and contrast opinions, what jokes you make at certain parts, etc. I hope that's okay.
    Truthfully, I'd like to see you do more comic adaptations of movies. For instance, there was a comic adaptation of Alien Resurrection, and I'd like to see you go into more detail about why you liked it (honestly, I liked that one too)

Still working my way through you're whole oeuvre and it is positively adorable to see you so young. I knew you were amazing i just hadn't quite grokked that you had such a rich history. Congrats on a decade of snarky and wonderful commentary. I really appreciate how positive you've become but deeply respect the shit-posting nature of the early videographer format. My favorite bit from Doug's review of the film is the Beegeees reference to how Bones looks here
    When I first saw the film, I remember being crushed by disappointment. Naturally, seeing Wrath of Khan the next week blew me away-not often you have a sequel THAT much better! (No, Empire Strikes back isn't that much better than A New Hope)

    7:35 to be fair to the comic, the plot hole with the Enterprise being the only ship in interception range, that was already in the movie (although an explanation might be that the V'Ger cloud is moving on such high warp that only the REFITTED Enterprise with her new, more powerful warp drive is capable of interception - there are other ships in the area, but they wouldn't be able to keep up with the intruder, or if they could then only for a few minutes - in the novel adaptation, it is mentioned that they are not meeting the cloud "head on" but rather meet head on -> passing by while maintaining frontal facing -> pursuing)
    8:45 that scene is included in the Director's cut
    10:40 once again, problem with the movie, the comic is just adaptation
    13:30 nice effects, seemed authentic

    I think the cloud sequence was supposed to be an homage to the stargate sequence at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was just as bizarre there as it is in this movie, but (in my opinion) the music in the Star Trek version was better.

    • @CosmoShidan

      I'd considered it being the Blip format issue, but I've watched HoPR on your site, and plenty of Blip format videos on Channel Awesome/TGWTG. (Though the entire library of some reviewers behaves the same way).

      @CosmoShidan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recently re-watched the film for the first time in 25 years. I didn't find it to be slow at all, and I had the same sense of wonder from when I originally watched it as a child. You have to give Douglas Trumbull a lot of credit for creating a sense of scale and otherworldliness to V'GER, as the Enterprise enters its hull. Plus, when Kirk arrives at the Enterprise, I had a sense that he was looking at it with nostalgia and awe, much like audiences did back in 1979. Although I didn't grow up in the 1970s, I had this same sense as I was viewing it for the first time in years.
      One other thing to note here is that, the film was also consulted by Isaac Asimov, who is considered to be not great a story-teller, but a great science writer; so maybe that's one of the reasons fans might find the film to be slow.

    It is interesting to note that the first pilot of the TV series was "too cerebral" too. The second was much more action-oriented. History repeats?

    This might as well have been a review of the movie. I'm not sure if that speaks well of the adaptation. It had the opportunity to fill in more blanks to make the story more coherent, especially across multiple volumes...and from your review, it barely did (and I suspect mostly by happy accident).

    Spock wasn't necessarily deducing it. He could be abducting it - which in formal logic is basically the term for educated guesswork.
    However, in the case of abductive reasoning, you can't say "obviously" because you're drawing a conclusion from available evidence that suggests, but does not automatically confirm the conclusion.
    Also, I don't think we were shown any evidence that would lead to this conclusion, so he seems to just be pulling it out of his ass, which is not a dignified place for vulcans to be keeping conclusions.

    Can someone tell me what's appealing about Star Trek? Especially the early days with less of a budget? It must be doing something right to have a franchise rivaling Star Wars. Sure, Power Rangers has lasted for a good while too and the less said about that the better but that's been going downhill anyway.

      Exploration, optimism, and humanity. The idea of a better future for the entire human race, looking to see what it means to be human, and that even during the darkest of times, compassion and the will to improve ourselves will always conquer through cynicism.

    I can't help to also comment on your take on the movie. I felt much the same way -- long, boring, incoherent in places. But then I decided to watch it from the point of view of a Trek fan of the 70's. Imagine you haven't seen the Enterprise or its crew in over a decade. Also try to see this movie as attempting serious, contemplative science fiction (watch the trailers on the disc!). I know it's hard to see it as "fresh" when we're glutted with so much other Trek media... but my experience with TMP was much improved simply by acknowledging how novel it attempted to be. It's a much better movie than most people give it credit for. It's actually one of my favorites now.
