Heres another good Optimus quote that also shows Prime at his spark. Our goal has always been to see our friends the Minicons live a free life."

Skybound's first couple of issues are honestly some of the best Transformers storytelling in a good while. It is the perfect example of something that SHOULD in theory be terrible what with the brutality and so on but because it's written by grown-ass adults and not edgelords desperate to feel mature? It's genuinely compelling and heartfelt, the robots are actually characters, the human drama works and it's used in tandem with the robot story and doesn't overtake it. Weirdly, it feels the inverse of G2. In every way that comic is the 90s in all the worst ways, this one's genuinely thoughtful.
Right. Not every story needs death and brutality (except for those that are, well, mostly for that purpose), but if you are going to include it in a property with a certain amount of potential and meant for an adult audience, then you might as well connect those things to interesting storytelling and characterization.
I've only read the first issue, thanks to an event exclusive comic I got from Edmonton Expo 2024. So I haven't read too much of it yet(as of this reply), but from a first impression, I'm a bit iffy on the whole brutality aspect. Maybe it'll grow on me as I read more issues? IDK?
@@nine_tails137 Here's something to keep in mind as you read. The brutality has a purpose. The Decepticons, the main villains, are portrayed as having no care for human life so their actions are horrific and vicious to make a contrast between them and the Autobots. It's shown in how Starscream willingly squishes a human and is gleeful while Prime accidentally crushes a dear and is filled with guilt and shame that, even if by accident, he killed an innocent fragile creature. Prime willingly rips his own arm off to fight off Skywarp. He doesn't beat him to death, he simply sacrifices a part of him because an innocent was threatened. In a way, it's the inverse of say the Bay films which uses extreme violence purely for entertainment and has the Autobots do it because the idea of robots ripping each other to pieces was thought of first and story came second. Or to compare it to other comics, it's unlike the G2 comic which revels in 90s edge. Grisly violence is used effectively because it's meant to be disgusting, it highlights fundamentally that Starscream is a bastard and that he needs to be stopped, he revels in the carnage while the Autobots don't.
@@the-aspiring-creator4249 Oh I'm not denying that. All I'm saying is in previous transformers media, most of the robots stuck around, until their toys were discontinued. Then they were killed off because of it. And when Hasbro did that in the G1 Movie, it upset a lot of young kids, and they got a wave of angry letters from parents. And while this comic series shows the consequences of killing, via Starscream gleefully enjoying it, while Optimus remorses, it feels a tad gory at times. Like something straight out of a slasher movie or something? IDK, maybe I'm over-analyzing?
@@nine_tails137 I wouldn't say you're over-analyzing more that you're analyzing from a different place that doesn't consider some factors. For instance, the G1 movie was made to market new toys to kids by a company that didn't realize just how connected to these characters the audience was. The movie has the old cast quickly brushed aside, some only having bodies featured and not even moments where they go out in a blaze of glory. It was a genuine shock to the system. Skybound is not being marketed to children. It's not here for the sole purpose of promoting new toys. It's made for older fans and newcomers to the brand. There's no need to dance around death or have characters stick around solely because of a toy release. As such there's freedom and yes it's a little gory but really it's about as violent as the Bay films, Prime and maybe the old Marvel series if a little more and even so it's not super excessive, especially with how while it won't shy away from the gruesome, it will not revel in it by just plopping it in front of you in all its disgusting detail.
18:08 That panel really stuck with me after reading these issues and it just tugs at the heartstrings every time. Speaking as a hardcore TF fan, this Optimus was a breath of fresh air. A real problem with writing Optimus is generally it's much like writing Superman where it felt like for years people writing him just didn't get it. Either you got hyperviolent murder Prime like what was in the Bay films or you got an uncharismatic bore who spent his time speechifying and being stoic. This Optimus is the most human and caring take we've had in a long while. Him telling Sparkplug that he is mighty, showing no trace of superiority about his size and power is Optimus. Him showing remorse and regret over harming innocent life and a desire to learn about a new culture is Optimus. This is the Optimus Prime I wish we'd see more in Transformers media.
Optimus' line against Soundwave of "I seek peace, but I am no fool" still sticks with me. It paints a character who's not naive but still values fighting for an ideal with optimisim and kindness.
Fun fact, where the sound effects go "You Know the Song", they HAD intended it to be the lyrics of "The Touch". They couldn't get the license for it in time, so... Frankly? I feel like it fits for Matrix Boosted Optimus vs Devastator.
20:10 It's actually called Nemesis Prime. And I say it because the thing is either a dark reflection made manifest, OR the decayed body of Optimus himself brought back via the evil energies of Unicron. Either way, it really exists, and is a jerk.
Ok, what a magnificent thing to have in your background. Just, "You know the song." Literally nothing more needs to be said. The books get props for that alone.
As I've said above, this is actually by accident. They wanted to use The Touch, but couldn't afford to get the license in time. Ironically, the book is BETTER for it.
19:37 Yeah, you're gonna need to read the Cobra Commander miniseries to find out more, along with the Energon Universe special released on this year's Free Comic Book Day.
Oh hell, it is gonna be such chaos once Megatron finally returns to the front lines, especially with the beef he got with essentially all sides but the Joes. Give it time, the Joes are guaranteed to start beefing with him too.
Daniel Warren Johnson is one of the best modern Cartoonist working in comics. Murder Falcon, do a powerbomb, extremity, Wonder woman dead earth and this comic are beyond exceptional.
TF One got me back into the franchise in a big way, and that got me seeking for more material. Thats when I remembered the new Image Skybound TF comics, and I went and bought the first TPB. Was utterly blown away by what I read, and that actually got me to read the other stories of the Energon Universe like Void Rivals and the GI Joe prequel stories. Now I'm fully invested in this line and I'm excited to get into this into roughly the beginning to see where it goes.
15:15 - This is apparently straight up a reference to to the 08th MS Team, which is amazing since it feels like Daniel Warren Johnson is the first Western Transformers comic writer to actually get mecha and not have a seething contempt for it.
@@kingofthegundam7974 If they do, it’s probably an ego thing. Transformers came from Mecha, all the toys that got rebranded as the original transformers were Japanese mecha toys.

Holy cow! I didn't expect a review of Skybound Transformers but this is awesome! Skybound is my first ever Transformers comic series that I'm following monthly and I've been lovng it!
25:20 specifically, lift Devastator and Burning Hammer him off the ground. I know this will come across like the gundam "nature of war--WOW COOL ROBOT", meme, but holy fuck, Daniel Warren Johnson being both a wrestling fan and a mecha/giant robot fan makes this the best giant robot comic action wise
Actually, I was thinking more "the Touch" or "Dare" by Stan Bush. Or maybe the more appropriate one for that situation would be "Instruments of Destruction" by N.R.G.?
This is very impressive, the humans were actually helpful and not a nuisance, Optimus is the right kind of being a good person but also willing to throw down and take names and be a badass like he's supposed to be, We actually get some violence that makes perfect sense and isn't overblown, Starscream finally gets to lead the decepticons and in typical star scream fashion he is screwing it up horribly and Optimus gets Megatron's arm and it is awesome as hell. I do love how the humans in the beginning they're not overly trusting of the autobots and they just point to the fact that it's a war and that means there are no good and evil but then you have that moment where Sparky's having that good heart-to-heart with Optimus and it feels like that they're connecting. Plus optimus transforming into vehicle mode for that little kid was so adorable as I'm pretty sure any kid would love to see a giant robot transforming into an alternate mode. Overall, this is a damn good version of Transformers and I hope this series doesn't get canceled!
Hell yeah! The first appearance of Daniel Warren Johnson. I LOVE his stuff. Do a powerbomb, his beta Rey Thor book, I pray one day he gets to do a Hulk book.
13:45 I mean, GI Joe is kind of known for this, and since this is their universe too, lasers flying everywhere with 0 dead, 2 wounded is pretty commonplace
I have to admit that from this review alone, I am all in on this. I'm not sure what cutting the timeframe from the Autobots escape down to twohundred years will do for the plot, but I am absolutely enamored by Optimus Prime's character here, gentle AND strong, the way the human characters are darker but not miserably so, and even killing off Bumblebee in order to slot Cliffjumper into his role feels fresh, unexpected. I'm loving the character dynamics here, like how Optimus seems to have some kind of bond with Soundwave(?) and how Skywarp's reaction to Thundercrackers dead body is both funny AND makes me interested in seeing if that's gonna go somewhere. And topping all that off with a style that might be little less "clean" than I'm used to seeing in Transformers comic, has an INCREDIBLE energy to it with all the clotheslines, suplexes, jumpkicks and more, really makes these giant robots feel impactful whenever they just slam into each other as hard as can be, like the scene where Devastator picks up Optimus and just DRAGS him across a cliff-wall... every fight in here finds a way to look really cool, and I can't wait to see more.
Your Marvel Transformers comics retrospective video inspired me to start buying and reading the Skybound Transformers comics and right now I am loving it!
20:19 That actually comes back to bite Starscream later. Soundwave challenges him to combat over leadership and ultimately kicks the cowardly jet's ass. Last thing Starscream hears before Soundwave rips out his heart? "You kicked my Ravage!" Moral of the story: never mess with people's pets.
As someone who's almost always looking down at the ground to make sure I don't step on any bugs or other small animals, I can definitely relate to Optimus's despair when he accidentally crushed that deer beneath his foot.
@AlecDraven Considering that Bambi came out decades before Disney would own Marvel, and this comic came out well after the Marvel Transformers run, I'm not sure how you think that would make sense.
@@CJMoody In my defense, there are not many dead deer that I could name to make said joke. (And, in all fairness, Linkara makes the same joke in the credits.)
The fact they planned an entire universe over 3 comics( transformers, gi joe and void rivals) and kept it on the down low until the first void rivals issue was brilliant. I’m hearing nothing but good reviews of all three series especially the gi joe character spotlights.
I'm REALLY impressed by all the mid transformation shots in this comic. I haven't read too many transformers comics honestly but I don't ever remember seeing this. Its really cool and I gotta imagine its very challenging.
The artist actually owns a very famous third party Optimus Prime figure, which he basically uses as a reference. You can tell he uses that specific one because Optimus proportions in these comics are very much the same as the one fo the third party figure.
I'll be honest, despite being a massive Transformers fan, I've been reluctant to check out Skybound's run because the first thing I learned about it was that they killed off Bumblebee. It sucks seeing my favorite character killed off right at the start before he could even wake up. That said, everything else I've heard about these comics sounds really good and intriguing. I fully expect to crack and read through it all at some point. You've certainly made a good case for giving it a chance.
I understand that reaction, Bumblebee was my favorite Autobot as a kid, but I think in the bigger picture sense it's one of those moves that can pay off as it gives "screentime" and opportunities to other bots to sort of serve the "bumblebee" role, but let the writers put their own spin on things, like how this has given Cliffjumper more spotligh than he's had in a long while... but that in turn relies on being able to trust the writer to actually make use of a tragic death, and not just throw it in for shock value. Seems like his writer gets it, so I can give him the benefit of the doubt that Bumblebee's death wasn't just for nothing.
Eh, it wasnt really a reboot in 2019 so much as the main story... ended. It was a pretty damn good ending too, wrapping up threads that had been going for years and years. *my* suspicion is they knew their contract was unlikely to be renewed, so they spent the time and ended it where it needed to be instead of keeping going for too long then needing to suddenly wrap everything up badly
Unlikely, given how they were seeding things like who gave Exarchon his abilities (it's hinted to be the Quintessons) and FINALLY getting into Sunstorm's whole deal after going for SOMETHING back at Dreamwave. I don't buy the lack of marketing. I really think it had to do with Hasbro wanting a shared universe and nobody wanted to do that again.
You can tell the artist of these issues is a big wrestling fan. Everyone in this series fight pretty much like a pro-wrestler, he did the same thing when he illustrated the Beta-Ray Bill mini series a few years ago. Also, Ratchets attack at 5:54 is also a wrestling technique, simply called "The Big Boot" or "The High Leg"
5:16 Damn Optimus hits Starscream with a Lariat from out of nowhere 5:29 German Suplex to be specific 5:53 Hello Big Boot 9:57 It’s better than being: 1 Annoying 2: Sideswipe (Robots in Disguise 2001) 3: Hot Shot (Transformers Armada (At First and don’t go for the toy) and 4: Wheelie (G1) 11:41 *Takes a minute to process it and* Wait I know the cast of GI Joe do to multi role but Duke is a Sergeant in the Army. Best he should be flying an Apache. 13:13 *Resists making a Current Popular wrestler’s reference* 13:21 Meh That was taken care of by the Winchesters back in season 1 14:17 IIRC Cliffjumper and Bumblebee are based on the Micromaster side and is roughly a Beetle but he is actually a Porche (what technically is A Beetle due to Porche being owned by Volkswagen) Damn that’s a lot of Wrestling based references I made.
It’s explained in the Duke miniseries he was getting a ride with a friend before the call came in. Naturally our Man of Action didn’t object to intercepting the bogey.
I have the feeling "You know the song" was added in last minute because either legal couldn't clear the words "You got the Touch," or they were overly cautious about trying to put those words in. Also, love Starscream's Lydia Deetz moment with that "Don't say his name!!!"
If I had a nickel for every piece of Transformers media that came out in 2023 where bumblebee dying and Optimus being mad/upset about it was a plot point I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
13:18 Now I'm imagining Starscream doing it and now, instead of just shooting him once, Megatron just keeps pursuing him like some slasher just to keep shooting him, so now Starscream tells everybody to not say it so that Megatron can't find him
I absolutely loved these comics. The brutality, the heart, the sheer joy of hope and more. I loved it. Thank you for covering it Lewis! You're awesome 🙏😄
I hadn't heard about this series, but I'm overjoyed to know that there is beating asses with arms in it. That is how giant robots should go about their beatdowns.
These have been the first comics in a long time iv bought physically (as such can get the alternative covers which are really nice). First issue had me on the fence but its the second issue that really sold me on how good this version of prime is. Were all waiting on the redeco of him with megatrons arm. Glad you enjoyed them.
I love seeing new really good Transformers media that doesn't feel like it has to talk down to or water down themes for its audience. Transformers One and this comic series are such a brwath of fresh air, and I'm glad that the franchise is getting so much love and respect
I have a friend who recommended I pick up this series. And now that ive seen the first 6 issues I think im going to look for it next time im at the comic shop
I love how the Energon Universe has been building up Megatron instead of having him be repeatedly defeated. Not to mention that Void Rivals teased Unicron and I can't wait for what that crossover will look like.
And yet another banger getting me through a dark tea time. This time I am kinda standing alone trying to stop people from violating hr policies (talking negatively about trans people, putting on religious programming) and working on my name change for hr. I was wondering if I was the problem since no one else was saying anything and this is constant. And listening to how Optimus Prime talks, it made me feel seen how he felt genuine remorse for hurting something even though it wasn't his fault. Declaring he would not let anyone die. I don't think it is big work or I am a saint or something but it is important that people feel safe, accepted and seen at work. And if I have to be the one struggling, then so be it. I am trying to make the world better even if a lil. And I am not alone. As long as there is great injustice and evil, good will rise.
Sorry to pontificate again on your video. Thanks for being there. These have become a bit of a lifeline. And this hit me hard. Please keep up the good work. Like it means alot.
Skybound is the most interested I've been in Transformers comics for ages, and one of the only times I've been interested in it for *good* reasons and not *horrifying* reasons.
I'm really enjoying this series so far, especially the art style that does a fantastic job with showing motion and weight. I'm especially smitten with all the fun they had with the sound effects, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out!
I love the comic just having You Know The Song. It's funny on it's own, but it's even funnier because it seems like somehow the comic couldn't have the rights to use You Got The Touch.
I agree that these comics are great. As others have pointed out, they have the right mixture of violence and character development. I especially liked the moment Optimus fully realized that this world was different from his.
Y'know, I never really cared much for the Transformers franchise. I didn't grow up with the cartoons where they turn into vehicles. When I was a teenager, I enjoyed a 3-D animation where they transformed into animals and were stranded on a planet that had dangerous radiation, so they needed to transform to protect themselves, while exploring the planet to find and re-activate their comrades and find some clues about an ancient civilization from that planet. This is the first Transformers' story that grabbed my attention while watching this video. I wish we had gotten this, instead of the Michael Bay movies
28:14 Okay, legit it took me a second to realize that you said Scott Snyder and not ZACK Snyder. Nearly gave me a fright with that, Linkara. XD On a note relating to this comic, I find it interesting how Skybound seems to get Transformers while also having things be darker. This was a fun episode that I really enjoyed. I'll have to look for the other Skybound books.
Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I saw someone rip off their dangling arm to beat someone with, I'd have two nickels; it's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
I love just how connected both G.IJoe & Cobra are to the Transformers in this new continuity, the formation of both being connected to the Autobots & Deceptions crashing on earth.
Having these connections all from the get-go with the consequences of one book affecting all the others is great universe cohesion and makes all of them worth reading. Even Void Rivals.
So excited to see the channel that got me into comics finally talk about my all time favorite creator: Daniel Warren Johnson. Beta Ray Bill and Do a Powerbomb are both amazing and Murder Falcon is my all time favorite comic. Really hoping Lewis does another DWJ book at some point.
about 22:30: you joke, but such a character exists. In a comic Rodimus Prime and Galvatron once had to fight an frankensteined abomination made out of the bodys of Optimus and Megatron with Starscreams ghost piloting it. The character was named Guilthor, and sadly never got a proper action figur, despite being a concept you'd think would sell (even his alt-mode was a combination, essentially he became a cruise-missile truck)
Starscream: Do! Not! Say! His! Name! My brain: Huh, guess he thinks Megatron works like Joe Hendry, all you have to do is just say his name and he appears.
6:37 That sums up my feelings of everytime a story treats attack animals as the tragic victims of whoever fought back (not counting animals that would only "fight" to defend someone).
Robert Kirkman (creator of invincible) is a producer and supervisor of these comics. And the dude has been a Transformers Superfan since he was a kid. So this is a dream come true for him
I think what really helps sell Optimus in these comics is that he can make big speeches, be epic and great... But he also has various moments of vulnerability. Immediately after doing a big fight against the Decepticons moments after being awakened, he speaks so softly and weakly while cradling Bumblebee's corpse, it's poignantly jarring. It reminds you that for all Optimus is this larger-than-life figure for the Autobots, he's still, for the lack of a better word, very human

@@leithaziz2716 Very true to the better versions of the character.
@leithaziz2716 That scene reminds me of this quote: 'Do not mistake kindness for weakness'.
Fun fact, where the sound effects go "You Know the Song", they HAD intended it to be the lyrics of "The Touch". They couldn't get the license for it in time, so...
Frankly? I feel like it fits for Matrix Boosted Optimus vs Devastator.

That song does play during a fight scene, after all.
20:11 There's actually a transformer like that! His name is Nemesis Prime.
Hell yeah! The first appearance of Daniel Warren Johnson. I LOVE his stuff. Do a powerbomb, his beta Rey Thor book, I pray one day he gets to do a Hulk book.

Juuuuuust the smallest of hinches.

@Hartzilla2007 OK, let's just only hint at him small chunks of what awaits him, alright? The human heart can only take so much hype at once.
24:45 Okay. That was legitimately the best use of that old meme I've seen in years
13:45 I mean, GI Joe is kind of known for this, and since this is their universe too, lasers flying everywhere with 0 dead, 2 wounded is pretty commonplace
I guess Jetfire assumed Starscream was also a big fan of Megatronus Prime.

Does this mean that Optimus is responsible for Bambi's Mom's death? (Transformers was a Marvel book and Marvel is owned by Disney now.)
@AlecDraven Considering that Bambi came out decades before Disney would own Marvel, and this comic came out well after the Marvel Transformers run, I'm not sure how you think that would make sense.
@@CJMoody Just trying to make a connection for the sake of a joke.
@AlecDraven No offense, but your joke fell flatter than that poor deer under Prime's foot.

I don't know... Ratchet's kick looks like one of Rob Van Dam's round house kicks, and he is a wrestler.

These are some really good comics. I hope Linkara gets around to reading the rest at some point.
You can tell the artist of these issues is a big wrestling fan. Everyone in this series fight pretty much like a pro-wrestler, he did the same thing when he illustrated the Beta-Ray Bill mini series a few years ago.

I agree that these comics are great. As others have pointed out, they have the right mixture of violence and character development. I especially liked the moment Optimus fully realized that this world was different from his.
Good to see Image stay on brand with weirdly drawn anatomy. 😉
Y'know, I never really cared much for the Transformers franchise. I didn't grow up with the cartoons where they turn into vehicles. about 22:30: you joke, but such a character exists.
It's a shame you stopped at 6 because just the next issue Starscream gets what's coming to him
Brutally

Oh hell yeah, I was gonna patreon this but I'm so glad someone else did first
