  • "It is enormously and astonishingly satisfying that Saint-Saens conforms totally to expectations and produces as his Opus 1 three pieces that are absolutely the antithesis of showy, written for that beloved instrument of Victorian drawing rooms and corseted ladies - the harmonium. The harmonium was a modest, foot-pumped, small reed organ that in the 19th century was only slightly less wildly popular in musical circles than syphilis.
    No. 2 is the aforementioned Barcarolle in F sharp minor. Effective , but perhaps a bit more accustomed to a dirge. The middle section is representative of Chopin’s Raindrop Etude, before the main lilting tune returns with a few more embellishments and interesting harmonies. The ending is slightly curious - ending on the expected F sharp minor chord, before changing to major, before changing back to minor."
