@@elvirabary It seems to me, I must confess, that I love you. Since you’re lovely. And… beyond ! Beyond what ? - Beyond the impossibilities that constrain us to be so far apart. You are a reaching-beyond, like flowers reaching beyond. Beyond what ? - Beyond the beyond. Very close, although so far. Yeah, it seems to me… that I love you !
It's great you at least had a father who believed you had potential. I tried to encourage my daughter and she turned out quite well. Thank you for sharing your story.
You are young at heart Elvira, they say we should try not to lose our inner child as wr go through life, you have certainly preserved your youthful charm and enthusiasm, great story and I'm glad you didn't model yourself on Margaret Thatcher!! In my eyes and in many others she was a heartless person.
Wow, what a lovely story! It's so interesting to know some people in the Soviet Union admired Margaret Thatcher. I don't think too much of her (or Ronald Reagan) myself, but this shows the freedom of the human spirit. Russians were yearning for a different society, and one model was provided by Thatcher. And just the fact that you even knew about her is significant. I imagine it would be very hard for someone in North Korea to have heroes anywhere outside of N. Korea. The interesting thing is that though the Soviet government was quite oppressive, I understand it wasn't the worst place in the communist world. Someone who grew up there told me that when communism fell, people in Moldova thought of joining with Romania, to which they have a strong ethnic connection. But they found out Romania was in worse shape than Moldova!
Life in the Soviet Union depended heavily on a person's social position. If someone belonged to the nomenklatura and had access to special stores and services reserved for them, they could live quite comfortably. But for everyone else, life was often miserable. For example, it was impossible to buy oranges in my city-you had to go to Moscow for them. My grandma lived in a small town, and it was impossible to buy butter or sour cream there. She could only get those items through her friends who worked in the factory cafeteria.
@@elvirabarylife seems a bit dystopian nowadays because of political conflicts, war and disinformation. Some people are looking back towards the Soviet Union with a different understanding. Life looks so happy on the old Soviet posters but that was the whole purpose, wasn't it? Glad that you're here to tell what it was like.
@@elvirabary I remember Hannah Arendt, in her book The Origins of Totalitarianism, said that the Soviet Union after Stalin was not "totalitarian." She said totalitarianism is a system in a permanent state of "revolution," so no one is secure. Anyone can be purged anytime it looks advantageous for the "revolution." Starting with Khrushchev at least members of the Party were secure. I think of Khrushchev as kind of a hero because of how he broke with Stalin after he died. He was willing to call him out for his brutality.

I don't see Putin as the enemy. I think he has miscalculated massively, and this "SMO" should never have happened. He has looked at Russian history and acted in what he perceived as its best interest. I think this " SMO" has deeper roots than most people Fink. This conflict should stop now. Great storytelling!
Ты одна из моих любимых телеведущих, Elvira!
Спасибо!
The Volga, good apartment and a Dasha would have awaited you
Yeah... And I would spend the rest of my life trying to fix my Volga, furnish my apartment, and planting cucumbers and potatoes at dacha.

What a charming anecdote.
Too bad you blew it. 😆
Thank you!
Is your father still around to see how you're doing now?
Yes, he knows.
