Hey great video! I am a Professional Driver, I have driven. 20 Freightliner Cascade, now I been driving a 2021 KW T680 what a truck to drive. It very comfortable, easy to drive. Even pulling 45klbs! Mine truck has 436k miles Eith X15 475 HP! I been the 2.5 years! It has been like driving a Big Truck Caddie
Just an update, I just traded my 21 KW t680 and now I am in a brand new 24 KW T680! It is hard for to believe that KW could improve the handling and the ride the 21! But the 24 compared to 21! The 24 rides like a Lincoln! Shifts much smoother! I have the new Cummins X15 475 hp! I don’t remember the transmission in this one but not a Paccar transmission! The 24 with a 32k is averaging 9.4 mpg right now! First load I pulled with it.
Nice rig, great way to pull an RV around the country. A big consideration for the HDT owners is bridge height. 4 wheelers aren't used to thinking about the bridges they drive under. You need to plan your routes with an HDT.
Its starting to become a trend in recent years, using semis to tow big RV trailers instead of duallys, primarily for comfort reasons like the owner of this T680. In any case, when this gets sold, its going to be a helluva low mileage semi.
Thank you for sharing and showing the brand new special addition KW class #8 semi. Very wonderful looking and special features semi. With the Automatic transmission they are putting in these big Rigs. All the stuff you do in CDL school is secondary. In the school you practiced filling out your log sheet a thing and RVer doesn't have to do, sense there is no CDL license you don't spend time in class practice for taking tests. You are never hauling Hazmat material with that being in one part of CDL testing. In the CDL school you spend many hours backing through cones like your backing up to loading docks, you won't do that when pulling an RV. School teaches double clutching, you will never need that with an Automatic transmission. The only thing you really need is understanding of Airbrakes, and engine and body maintenance and daily walk around.
I drive a 2022 T680 a but for work. I would love to use it on a 5th wheel Rv. These things are designed to haul 80k pounds up the steepest grades in the US. There is nowhere he can't go now. All he's gotta worry about is height. He's still gotta feel the road BUT the peterbilts are by far the best riding out there. Lastly, the blinkers can't be self canceling because once the truck has finished turning the trailer just started its turn so the trailer needs to still be signaling.
Need to add an air hose reel. Connect it to the trailer brake connection since you had them remove the trailer air hoses. It’s amazing to be able to air up anything anytime you need to. He got that right about the truck being in control. With as big as travel trailers are getting they are over sizing the trucks pulling them. Yes you have the pulling power but not enough weight and brake power when compared to the trailer. He won’t have any issues at all controlling what his RV does now as he will have plenty of stopping-over and will also have the added benefit of the engine brake especially while in the mountains.
I had a 2002 Kenworth T2000 that I bought with almost 800,000 miles on it. It got driven another million miles over 10 years without an engine swap or overhaul. That's pretty unheard of, but shows the longevity that HDT's can have. We currently have a 36' Class A and the driving height, position, and size do very much remind me of driving the HDT. The main negative vs. a pickup is bobtailing and using it for driving around once you arrive at a campsite and disconnect. HDT's are inherently a little "squirrely" when driven without a trailer attached, due to all the extra weight up front that isn't balanced out by the weight of the trailer on the back. They are definitely worth considering as a tow rig if you want a long lasting, low maintenance alternative.
Awesome Rig! And no doubt the way to go! My question is what type of brake controller will you install for the trailer to coinside with the air brakes of the truck! Thank you Rod
I could be wrong, but I believe licensing depends on State DOT requirements. Here in CA, you will need a Class A NON Commercial license. Because of GVWR and OAL. Definitely will not need tires for 100k, they’ll age out before wear. My only concern is I’ve heard 5th wheel frames cannot handle Class 8 transport. KW are,in my opinion, the best big truck on the market so much nicer than the rest. Beautiful truck, but definitely overkill. You can accomplish the same goals with a Sport Chassis. Also a lot of resorts frown on Big Rigs, they do not appreciate the look of a Rig on their property.
Pretty truck, and the best engine choice. I'm a long time Heavy Haul/Oversize guy and I run the X15 Performance Series 605hp/2050 torque with an 18 speed manual. Did you order all disc brakes, they're the best. Funny how the rules are from state to state, in New York to drive that tractor you need a CDL/A license and if you take the road test on an automatic it's a CDL/A Restricted, and you also need an air brake endorsement. Just be sure you use a Truck based GPS, and know your overall height, I've seen far too many guys miss signs and go under a low bridge. I'm guessing that RV trailer can't weigh much more that 20,000-25,000 pounds, that truck won't even break a sweat. Does the trailer have electric brakes? Just be really carefull when braking in wet conditions, because that tractor will stop a lot shorter than the trailer will, even more so if you're using the Jake. I'd say that's probably a $200,000 tractor if not more, enjoy it and stay safe!
We pull our 45' 5th wheel all over the country with our 11 y/o Volvo 670. We are full timers & use the truck for our daily driver (along with the SXS when we can). When its grocery shopping time, our rig takes two spots in the lot, length wise. Not any wider than a dually p/u. We sometimes use our 5th wheel as a base camp & take the truck to camp in for a few days elsewhere, it is registered as an RV. Want to see more, go Hutchinson, Kansas, where the 2023 National HDT Rally is being held this October, 100+ rigs to look at, not two the same, as far as bed builds. Many seminars & chances to ask any questions re: the HDT world. (Harold, come on over to the 'Dark Side' of RVing, with an HDT, you know you want to.) Stay Safe-Have Fun.
Ohhh, that's a great idea. Would be cool to go out while the rig is at a campground. I'll have to check out that rally. Sounds like it would be fun! and ohhhhh. definitely has the gears turning!
we love our 2016 kennworth t680 factory singled axle isx15 eaton fuller auto 10 speed with 680k pulling a 2021 45 foot road worrier 4275rw toy hauler it like a 1ton pulling a john boat. we feel more safe, and not wore out after a long haul 2x 100 fuel tanks so we dont stop near as often for fuel. we use it as normal truck the only thing we cant do is go through a drive through. its the same with as a dully just taller and little longer.and like you said the price is cheaper than a new f450.
Like driving an RV , and if you like it , its the last vehicle you will buy for this. Even old trucks it was the norm to hit a million miles before looking at any major engine work. And thats working it commercialy with the max legal tractor trailer weight on Interstate of 80,000 pounds. Off Interstate permits for much heavier.
I remember in 2015 being next to a rig like that at the Koa in Little Rock. They did not have a toad but had a dual sport bike on the back. While we were there they only drove the truck around with the family in it. I think a mid cap Volvo with the short front axle spacing and single rear would still leave room for a bike of some kind and be as easy to drive around as the dually . Not that I've thought about it LOL
I love it and would love to have it, my only negative catch is he could have took his 450 and put it on full air ride through kelderman and saved 100k…
Harold you need a Sportchassis! it's a great compromise between a 350/450 and a full size HDT. We love ours and it has a ton of the features of the HDT but is still small enough to drive around as a normal vehicle when your on day trips.
It is very similar to a Class A luxury coach….but the Class A actually sits a bit higher. I know because I look down into a tractor cab, when I pass. Lol
I drive truck for a living. great video. My goal is to get a momentum or grand solitude. was looking at getting a F350... Might just get an old tractor and run it that way!! I can get a good old tractor for half the price of a new 350
I drive this same truck. 2024. I would not recommend leaving the engine brake on while driving. Long story short you'll save more fuel with it off. Leaving it on means any time you are not pressing the accelerator you will begin to slow and sometimes it can be undesirable. Meaning there is already a natural braking effect just by drop gears as you approach a stop. Use the engine brake to save on holding the brakes when on declines/downgrades. Figure out what speed you would like for the grade and work you way to it, for example 55mph in 11th gear, Hit the M Shift button on the side of the shifter, it will lock you in that gear, THEN turn on the engine brake. What you should then find is the truck slows itself in a very pleasant non-jerking manner and will not down shift on you. This is important for going down mountains. Please give it a shot! Leaving the engine brake on all the time you likely notice very random and sometimes 'jerky' behavior as when the gears are not locked the truck will attempt to guess at how much it should brake. Granted this won't be as critical to you but sometimes I have to do this because of grossing 80,000lb. Great video! Cheers!
Great video, that truck is beautiful! I always did like the Kenworth trucks. I have driven many of different ones, but they are like a special breed of truck.
You won't see that from new trucks. All the emissions stuff constantly fails, the transmission fail, they're just not very good. Especially when a class 8 costs over $200,000.
Like always, great video Harold. Doug and Marilyn the new rig is pretty sweet. Can't wait to see it with the upgrades in Georgia. Harold super jealous you already drove it. See you guys soon.
The initial question that comes to my mind is the functionality of RV trailer brakes while connected to a HDT. Class 8 trucks are designed to operate air brakes in a trailer, will standard aftermarket trailer brake controllers integrate with a Class 8 truck? I have to imagine this is the case, otherwise every positive that a HDT brings to the table would be wiped out and then some if the trailer brakes are inoperative when you are towing.
Standard aftermarket trailer brake controllers will literally integrate with any vehicle that has brake lights. Literally, because brake controllers operate with 4 wires. Positive, Negative(ground), Electric brake out, and Brake signal in which comes from the switch behind your brake pedal that activates the lights. The trailer cable will have to be custom installed. As the cable for a semi truck and trailer are not the same as consumer truck and trailer. Primary difference, there is no wire to activate brakes on a trailer. Tractor trailers supply and control brakes with air only. No wires needed. But any competent mechanic could install a functional cable in less than a couple of hours. *Competent mechanic.
@@1StrangeAdventure for anybody out there looking to buy a HDT look into a company called TMC they have an absolutely insane maintenance schedule and truck cleanliness. Good luck. Yes, everything is expensive these days great work.
Wrong, it's not about use, it's about weight rating. The Florida CDL requirement can be found in section 322.54, Florida Statutes. The following persons are required to have a CDL: Any person who drives a motor vehicle combination having a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more must possess a valid Class A driver license, if the gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. Any person who possesses a valid Class A driver license may, subject to the appropriate restrictions and endorsements, drive any class of motor vehicle within this state.
Should have training. Three negatives that come to mind are: 1 Insurance 2 parking 3 No four wheel drive. You will get stuck way easier than your F-450. The Jake break is for large hills and mountains. You can cruise down mountain grades with both feet flat on the floor.
My dad was a truck driver for a very long time and he had a KW. Rest in peace dad. He would have loved this one. Thanks for sharing

I have a 2016 T680, when I'm done using for work, my plan is to convert it for Rv. I love my truck and this guy's setup is awesome! Cool video
What a killer setup! Hope you guys get many many happy miles out of it.
Theres a button or switch on dash that keeps it from rolling backwards when starting out on a ramp or hill!

WTH is with the ugly black wheels ?!

Yes, typical Merica way of doing things and it's fantastic. Gotta love it.

T680s aren't toys for general public that's for sure. 😂
You could pull an RV with a single axle tractor. I don't understand why he would need a tandem axle unless he bought it off the lot like that🤷♂️

But any competent mechanic could install a functional cable in less than a couple of hours. *Competent mechanic.
Nice truck. The only thing I wouldn't want are the mirrors on the hood. Congratulations that is nice.
Thanks! Any specific reason for removing the mirrors?
Saying NM has some rough roads is an understatement The roads here absolutely suck as does everything else.
All I see is another park spot lost at the truck stop
What’s an MPG
11-12 mpg
Oooooweee sweet this will match my 22 honda accord touring
I’ve never wanted a semi until now
SAME!!!
You should also install front wheel drive hydraulic hes going on and off rough roads with a SIM i
You could always put that Spyder on the truck with you.
ohhhh, great idea!!!!
nice :))... why dont ppl just use a day cab for pulling RV ?
So what’s the price on this?
Does he need a CDL to drive that? Or is it a free for all on old guys driving semi tractors with no training as long as it's not a commercial semi?
Yes and no. Some states do require a Cdl and some don’t.
Daaang ….. Nice rig ! Wishing I had that disposable income. 😁
Expensive tow rig !!!!
Everything is expensive these days 😬
@@1StrangeAdventure for anybody out there looking to buy a HDT look into a company called TMC they have an absolutely insane maintenance schedule and truck cleanliness. Good luck.
Yes, everything is expensive these days great work.
Would suggest that you do not go off manufacture suggestions for oil change cut it in half would prolong engine life.
You dont need a cdl to operate a truck with air brakes in florida?
Not for non-commercial use.
Wrong, it's not about use, it's about weight rating.
The Florida CDL requirement can be found in section 322.54, Florida Statutes. The following persons are required to have a CDL:
Any person who drives a motor vehicle combination having a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more must possess a valid Class A driver license, if the gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. Any person who possesses a valid Class A driver license may, subject to the appropriate restrictions and endorsements, drive any class of motor vehicle within this state.
Should have training. Three negatives that come to mind are: 1 Insurance
2 parking
3 No four wheel drive. You will get stuck way easier than your F-450.
The Jake break is for large hills and mountains. You can cruise down mountain grades with both feet flat on the floor.
Quite a nice truck, quite expensive too. If you have the money, why not...
Emissions cause you any trouble?
Gotta have a class a CDL
