    Thank you for taking the time to go over how a TH-cam channel can affect one's life. You mentioned some things I had thought about and some that hadn't occured to me. It was very enlightening.
    I doubt I'll take the plunge, but if I ever do, I'll definitely keep your words in the back of my mind. Again, thanks.

I think your vibe will keep you in work for a long time to come so you can come back here at 60 and see that, even back now, you had the right idea... It's crazy that you made this video because I'm that perfectionist person you spoke about. Not too long ago I made a review on the Warm Audio WA-73EQ. It was about 11 or so minutes which is what I think how long an honest review should be about. I liked how I edited the video, the sound quality was really good, the picture quality was in nice 4k from my Mirrorless camera, and I felt I got my point across. Well a couple days go by and i'm seeing that my viewer retention was about 3 minutes and I only had about 30 views. After spending an entire day editing the video I felt a little defeated by that.
    It being my first video and me being particular young sounding and looking, I wanted to show that I had credibility when I spoke about gear because I notice most audio engineering channels that are "Successful" have an older "Host" or they're older looking. So in the video I spoke about how "I worked at a commercial recording studio called Engine Room Audio in Wall St Manhattan and I primarily worked with Big name Artist." and how "I've been the Engineer for Flatbush Zombies for the past 2 years and was the primary tracking engineer on the Vacation in Hell album and the Beast Coast album." I felt that it made look like a "Show Off." Which is not what I felt primarily and was not what I wanted to get across. I was simply trying to reiterate that I am a pro.
    I took the video down.
    I plan redoing the video but I want to try doing it in more of a discussion form sort of like you but I guess I hate the fact that I really don't see any result from what I post and I think that has to do with my appearance and maybe the quality of home studio.

      Hey Eastern Ruler. First of all, just going through your prose it is crazy clear that your passion for this comes through. You did everything right. You laid out the formula (the recipe) put the ingredients together, mixed it up, hoped people would take a bite. Having not seen the video, I'm not sure why it wasn't successful. Maybe to you, "Show off" was "you being yourself, and super knowledgable", who knows. My advice: Record the video as you want, don't edit it if you can help it, be you. Tag Warm Audio on twitter, hell, email their marketing people and say "I'm just gonna leave this here".
      At the end of the day, you are the product. Not everyone wants what you're selling. That's OK. You were honest, and eventually people want something real, a connection. You can offer this.

    I think the most awesome part about having a YT channel is all the stuff you learn just by having to deal with production quality and the completely unexpected directions that can take! I’m a photographer by profession and started a YT channel about my creative process about a year ago. Along the way I ran into some audio issues (neighbours, ugh!), learned about audio restoration and bought an audio interface to improve my sound quality. My audio interface has a little guitar icon on the second channel and that got me thinking. I used to make guitar based dark ambient about 15 yrs ago. I abandoned it after I lost all my music in a hard drive crash (I had backups, but those were made from the already corrupted files, ugh). Hadn’t finished a track until the little guitar icon on my focusrite started mocking me. I now make the background music for my YT channel myself and sometimes scare my unsuspecting photography viewers with too eerie tunes 😂 I came here after watching your excellent iZotope mixing tutorial, because people keep asking me to upload my stuff to Spotify ...!

    I disagree with you about the absolute need to make videos with hugely high production values. I watch content by Henson,James, Gleckman and Beato and they are super amazing but your channel is the only one where, whether I’m directly interested in the subject or not, I will always watch when a new video comes out. Why? Because I get a sense of authenticity, humility, humour and personality from you that I just don’t get from the other guys. The shining light in your videos is you and your delivery, sure the video quality is great and your new set up and studio looks fab but the core of the quality is the uniqueness of what you deliver and I think it’s too easy to forget that. Btw I slightly miss the humming fridge, and ever changing backdrop of life from your previous flat/apartment.......added a certain individual flavour!

    • @DarkSideofSynth
      @DarkSideofSynth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I didn't know Geoff and this is the very first video of his I'm watching. You don't really need much: audio (given we are talking about music, it IS important) must be good enough, so that we can appreciate the content. I hate it when the voice over and the music are not properly level-matched. Take time for that - it's not much effort but it's a great result. It's funny how many so-called mixing tutorials did not see any good mixing themselves ;)
      You do not need fancy 4K super cameras, you don't even need to appear on camera if you don't want to and there are many cheap good solutions for lighting which can get you quite far without busting the bank.
      Content is king. As long as people are interested in what you provide and you are not sloppy, that is OK. Hollywood makes high-grade stuff but... sucks, the importance of a good story, of something meaningful, REALLY entertaining has gone out the window and SFX, and eye candy is now front and centre. Much smoke, no meat.
      I agree that doing it all by yourself is hard but - on the other hand - either you have the budget to delegate editing, promotion, etc. to others, or you have no other choice - except deciding not to do it ;)
      The "keep uploading on a regular basis" is also not that important. It can be at the beginning and to keep appearing in people's feed, and also as practice but many average-to-large channels have shown (with supporting data) that taking a break, or posting once a month or even less often than that very rarely has a negative impact on their performance because old videos are pushed and because fans have a big interest in their content, posting seldom but posting high quality stuff seems to pay off.
      From a very recent personal experience, I can confirm that even for micro channels like mine (217 subs): I did not post from mid July till early September but gained 10-15% subs nevertheless. You do have to promote yourself outside YT though... even when you have millions ;)
      I do agree on the pressure, expecations and some other cons. Those can somehow be true for any artist (athletes, politicians too) outside social media: once you decide "to go public", people will make or break you - it's inevitable. If it's not the video here on YT what they expect, it will be the song, the book, the game... not much different.

    Pretty dope video man.
    I've been postponing making my own channel for a couple of years, now.. mainly because of that perfectionism you talked about on issue n3.
    I do want to start from a prett high standard, off the bat.
    And the themes i like are these sort of things.. Reviews are cool.. and although i love gear.. technology..and making music with new interfaces.. there's WAY more to Life than gear, for sure.
    Thanks for this . I like you man, .. you're pretty honest, down to earth.. and it sound real, u know.. and it's like the 3rd or 4th video i watch from you. Subbed ;)
    PS: Yes.. the vibe is a LOT of it.
    I'd definitely work with you, for sure. Just from the vibe alone. We might make good music... we might come up woth crap stuff.. but at least we'd probably dig sharing the creativity ;) .

    Great advice and insight, I’m not a composer....I’m learning and I first came to this channel over a year ago. Firstly for the intelligent way topics are presented, the humour is also great!
    I set up a channel just over a year ago (noisy stuff) I’m old enough to take the negativity, also one thing that could be mentioned is “what is your goal?” Have you aspirations of becoming famous? My ego is only as large as my little home studio, if anyone enjoys what I do then for me that is success!
    If anyone is new here....please go and watch the earlier videos on here, Mr Manchester is a font of knowledge and will definitely keep you entertained!

    I get the impression that Henson spends a lot of time in editing, someone like Rick Beato doesn't, he pretty much points the camera and speaks.
    I totally understand your negatives and there is a pressure to "upload often" to grow the channel. But I appreciate creators who might upload once a month a quality video, rather than 4 videos a month that are mediocre.
    I think for you there is an added pressure because people know you work for Izotope and so there is a pressure to have at least high quality audio.
    On that note, I think you do. And I also think you have a terrific silky smooth voice.

Private (unlisted) YT links or website with password access? I'm no John Williams but, at the same time, I don't want to make my best works freely available. • @altermoremusic
    @altermoremusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm just started my one. And yea, its a lot of work! A lot... And for my level its a problem, because I need to focus on the video, but at the same time I need to devote a lot of time to the music. After all, I'm not some sort of Harvard graduate, or a musician from the cradle. I am self-taught, and even after 12 years of self-study, I still don't know so much. But, on the other hand, the desire to film something interesting and write music pushes me to experiment and challenges me to write music and think about what to shoot. So I am gradually becoming not just a composer, but also a videographer or some kind of filmmaker :D Also, I hope that some potential customers will find me through TH-cam. After all, I need a job, I need earnings. Thnx for you thoughts, anyway!

    I probably am the worst at doing social media: my FB page, Twitter & Instagram accounts, and YT channel are not that "engaging" (well, they are, to a small degree). However, I do not care much about getting the highest number of likes, or views. I want to think my "fans" have understood this 🙂

    Composing could be a private thing, and having a camera intruding on private space; some studios have a lot of bad language flying around, and racist /sexist stuff, too, which no one should hear, cos even if you don't mean the word, it st-till has an effect.
