In the wild, chinchillas are endangered and their greatest predators have been humans, for the fur trade. Domesticated chinchillas have more domesticated personalities and therefore are able to be further tamed by environment and benevolent ownership. To answer your question, my chinchillas do not fear being picked up at all - but domesticated chinchillas vary with their unique personalities. Certainly time and human effort to bond will assist with their desire to be picked up or to have direct interaction with humans.
